I hate O'Reilly Auto Parts

I miss the days of the local private auto parts house, with only name brands or OE parts and experienced guys behind the counter with visible tats and handlebar moustaches using an upside-down piston for an ashtray. :tear:

No uniforms, no company policy, no inexperienced new-hires, no kids, no pushing the house brand . . . no clean-air no-smoking laws  . . .

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL PARTS HOUSE! (If you still have one).

Thats how the European auto parts store around here is. The guy always has a cigarette in his hand. Good guy to deal with but some of the parts are ridiculous.

I got a little pissed at them today. "Hey do you have any normal relays that arn't for flashers."
Him"No we only sell vehicle specific relays."
Me "so you don't just have a 40amp relay forsale"
Him "No we do have 20amp though"

wtf I thought they only had "vehicle specific" relays....

Took me 30 seconds to pull one up on their website.

Typical trip to any of the local parts stores other than NAPA,

Me: Hey I need some parts for my 98 jeep cherokee.
Counter guy: okay, what year make and model
Me: uh, 1998, Jeep Cherokee.
Counter guy: Okay, so what parts do you need for your Grand
Me: No it's just a cherokee, not a grand cherokee
Counter guy: Oh I'm sorry, what year was that again

I'm not to surprised there's so many craigslist ads here that are "grand cherokee" but they're really Cherokee's and vice versa.

Well I can give you some real time answers that will explain how you feel. We will pretty much hire anyone. We have people at my store who know very little. Every one has to send people to me if it has anything to do with a 4wd truck. its kinda frustrating but what can you do. We have one old guy who is your typical auto part experience type of guy. I enjoy working with him and he is great help on internal motor questions which struggle with sometimes. Pretty much we just get yelled at though whenever we conversate with customers more than what they are in for. This can become annoying as well since it keeps customers coming in. I wish I was a DM or RM for this company and could change some things around but im just the little guy in the world. On a positive not if you felt your shucks was lacking in parts we brought in tons more parts when we converted to oreillys so hopefully some stuff that wasnt in stock before now is.

Visible ink, handlebars, Fu Manchus, shorts - as long as you knew what the Hell you were doing, you were good. Before my local went corporate (sold out to CarQuest, dammit!) I'd go in with a handful of part numbers and go right behind the counter to get them myself. If I was having a project that would run into a bunch of trips, I'd tell them to keep a tab going and I'd settle up when it was done (Gawd, I miss that! So much easier...) Kinda nice being able to in to your counterman and start the conversation with "How's it goin', ya f***?"

EXACTLY!!! Amen, brother. AMEN. :tear:

Well, it's the new millennium; you either change with them or you stop fixing stuff. I go into the same NAPA store, and get asked the same questions. It's not that he doesn't care, it's just that I'm not his only customer.

On the bright side, most National Parts chains, except NAPA allow you to see if that part is available in your area.

If you do need to call around, ask who makes the part he is looking at on his screen. If it isn't what you want, have it drop shipped to their location.

Personally I'm glad parts stores have cleaned up their act. I don't much give a mouses behind what the person behind the counter looks like, but they better treat me with a modicum of respect until they get to know me better ;)

Hey look. theres a kernal of corn in my poop....

I have to agree about the mom/pop parts house. Had a small one up the road when I was growing up. Miss that place. When I lived up home in Wv. I used to shop for parts at Nationwide (iirc) and Western Auto. Well W.A went away, and Nation got bought up by Advance (iirc). I was used to shop Advance untill I moved down here to Ga. and untill the last year or so a Orilelly's (sp) open up and these guys know what was what. Plus a few own Jeep's so that helps.

Customer service is starting to go the way of common sense. Unused and forgotten.

No argument on respect - but that includes the ability to swear in my general direction, once you have earned the privilege of doing so. And, once I signal it's OK to do so that day (usually by swearing first. Note greeting above.)

It takes displaying competence consistently to earn that privilege, but it's a useful privilege to have (having been behind a parts counter myself for a few years, I can understand the frustrations of the job! BTDT, and printed my own damned T-shirt...)

I place a good deal more stock on competence and interpersonal relations than I do on personal appearance - just so I can tell you bathe every day in actual water, using actual soap. That really isn't so much to ask.

Kinda like watching House the other night, when he's doing clinic work. He's checking out someone who is immaculately groomed, and the guy is complaining about House's rumpled shirt et al.

"Do you use your toenail clippers to trim your nose hairs?"
"I find I can reach farther with them."
"I may not have ironed my shirt, and I may have forgotten to brush my hair this week - but you have athlete's foot in your nose."

Clean != neat. I may not always be neat, but I'm usually clean - and I do expect that other members of the public are as well. If not, I'm sure I could scare up some S.O.S. pads and a garden hose without too much effort...

I used to threaten my boys with that sort of thing. Only had to do it once. He didn't believe I'd do it, and that I could do it lone-handed. I chased him down in the front yard, and the whole neighbourhood got to watch him getting scrubbed.

What's funny is that everyone's kids would behave when they saw me!

well i've had kinda the same reaction to NAPA. i totaly refuze to shop there anymore.
as for A.A. & A.Z., gues sit all depends on the people behind the counter. hadone tell me "no, we don't carry that" go in a few hours later to a diff counter person ... walke dout this said part. as for O'Reilly's, so far i've had better experiance with them than with the other two.
"mom/pop" store? h3ll yeah! used to work for one in Pittsburgh, PA. never had a problem with them. even had a couple Viet Nam VETS workin the counter! still looked up all the parts in the BOOKS, not a silly computer. (at least before i had to leave, kinda a forced move). even had a "small" (3-4 mechanics + the garage "boss" /owners son) garage in the back, also worked there for the last 2 years of my employment there.
had the ash-trays on the counter & would constantly hear the jokes flyin out there, no mater how busy they was! (and you could joke with your bosses back then with out worrying about gettin fired for being "politicaly wrong")

That's exactly why I take the time to look up the part #'s myself on the website.

"Is it the compact wagon?" arggh

I can look past most slang and grammar errors, because I make them myself. Also, this is an Internet forum.. and not an essay for English literature so I'm not going to point out every error. Its just that one word "conversate" that really gets me going.
The reason it erks me so badly is because it originated from moronic rappers trying to sound intelligent and making a poor job of it. Read these pretty humorous "conversate"entries on urban dictionary: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=conversate

Side Note: "commentate" started the same way.. morons making a new word up from "comment" Now we officially have "commentators" (sports commentators etc.) Some people see languages as something you can be added to and changed as time goes on. However.. there is a difference between good 'ol fashion slang and morons attempting to use big words, getting it wrong, and the word sticking.

Plus, all I did was misspell a word (its the same phonetically). I didn't use one wrong, or pull one out of my arse. No "Irony" here.

Also, I'm not picking on DellStopJeep. I'm not saying he is a moron. I'm not going to be a arrogant prick and point everyone's errors (I make plenty on my own). I was simply making the comment that that particular word gets me going.

This isn't my pet peeve but managerspeak is. I am really tired of being told to dialogue with someone.
