I have a Dec 1994 XJ and I need a new sender unit that are nolonger available. I currently have fitted a Carter pump and sender unit for a 93. This did fit but starts off quiet but gets very very noisy after about 10 minutes. I see that the 93 has a ballast resister for the pump that mine being a 94 doesn't have. Does anybody know if it will stay quiet if I fit a ballast resistor to this one.
I have also heard that the return line could be touching the bottom of the tank causing the screeming noise. It doesn't do it when it is cold so I assume that this is not the problem.
I have just fitted a new fuel tank that Rockauto tells me will fit a 93 and a 94. The Carter fuel says it will fit both a 93 and a 94 and replaces my factory part number.
Has anybody replaced the Carter fuel pump in the 93 with a 94 Bosch fuel pump as I imagine this would fix my problem.
I could get a second hand sender unit but I liked the idea of using a new one as I don't want to have to continue to do this job over and over.
The tubes on my sender unit have cracked and bent around where they go into the tank. I did wonder about brazing them back up but not sure about how I would go about straightening them first. The wiper arm on the sender unit was also not touching all the time. I fixed this by bending it a little. The bottom of the tank has been stoved in a little which may have damaged things.
