i am sick of failing smog.

what gear ratio are you running with those 33" tires? stock gearing and tall tires will have a factor on your emissions test. also, when was the last cat replacement? still have the original? 02 sensor? have you run a diagnostics on all your emissions equipment?

Just the word smog boils my blood anymore. Sick of it. As long as I'm in this state, I believe I'm paring down my fleet to '76 or below.

Excerpt from my blog on the subject:

2. NO SMOG. I repeat, this cesspool of a state doesn’t require owners to smog vehicles that were built before 1976; that’s what I’m talking about. I’m so tired of computers, sensors, harnesses, smog junk, and the inability to radically modify an engine, I could scream. I’ll take an old V8 any day, because I can slap on a 4bbl, a mild cam, some headers and an electronic ignition whenever I’d like to for more power. Substantially more power. Plus, I save on the stupid smog bill every couple of years. Screw The Man. I don’t wanna Go Green; I want to run 300 horsepower or more in an old, carbureted truck. So there.

I hear ya, brother. No O2 sensors, no on-board computers, no total mess of wiring and vacuum lines everywhere, and no extra bill every two years so that we can make the gov't happy. :D

I'm really, really tired of it.

if you passed everything else i would say you might have a vac leak usually its a dance between hc and nox to rich colder cylinder high hc lower nox to lean low hc high nox i would try pluging everything that draws vac off the manifold and see what that does just dont unplug the map sensor my 89 250K 4.0 walked right threw but its never taken me more than 3 tests to get any car ive had to pass

Smog is irritating, but it's better than what a lot of states have. My mom's Blazer failed NY inspection one year for something stupid like wipers or whatever.

Also, check in with the SEMA SAN website, there's currently legislation on the books to move the smog exemption up to 1981. They give you contact info for who to talk to.

i would get raging wood if that ever happens. that opens up the doors to so many cool cars.

yea, get some 29" tires. those 33s are killing you. also get a new cat. you may have clogged it full of crap that will show up on the smog test when you sea foamed it. or even before. make sure your TPS is testing at the proper voltage and working correctly. a bad TPS will put the fuel control at a rich mix as a fault mode. (mine did that recently). which in turn will also kill the cat. and a new O2 sensor with the new cat. fresh oil change, basic tune up, and i bet you will be good to go.

Lot of money to spend without knowing that it will now pass.

If you're going to replace the cat (which I wouldn't do without being able to reasonably verify that it's a problem) be sure to get the exact cat that it requires. If a smog tech sees a new cat he must verify the number on the cat matches the required cat for that vehicle. Yes, CA is a PIA.

Having to change wipers is more irritating than having to track down some mystery Gremlin, all the while pouring hundreds of dollars at your POS to do so?

You must be smoking the good stuff. :D

The sheer amount of things you have to keep track of to pass inspection is more irritating than the one thing we have to worry about. But maybe I've been spoiled with vehicles that never had any issues passing smog...The only that took any effort was my 85 Nissan cause it burned oil and needed new vacuum lines.

vehicle going to get dropped off at a smog shop on monday, Time to admit when I am beat... On a side note, if it does need a cat, I will be in Nevada next week and could grab any cat I want....

Until your smog guy sees it and fails you on the visual...;)
see im not sure how this works, i thought if you had aready changed the cat to a generic one before the first of the year, it's grandfathered in. but i'm not sure how they keep track of this. i am guessing the only way they can have any sort of control over this is by CA, which they do. i think they assume if you have a generic cat, it must have been done before the first of the year.
just my assumption, curious as to how it really works. when i changed my cat i didnt want the hassles, so i got a CA legal one.

I know when I replaced the cat on my 85 Nissan, I had to get a CARB approved one. That was Sep 2010.

This "loophole" does work. I do not have to smog mine anymore so it does not matter. But I guess it all depends on who's doing it and if they got their coffee fix that day.

My smog guy has never ran the numbers on the cat, and just checks that the cat is there. scratch it up and make it look like it has been on there for a while and you should be good to go.
