GUNS & AMMO

You beat me to it... the idiot feds (USDA) are now buying 400,000 TONS of sugar so as to create some capital for sugar producers to pay back subsidized federal loans -- you're reading it right, WE the taxpayer are buying their product so as to provide the sugar industry with sufficient cash to pay the loans WE the taxpayer made to them. They are going to pay the interest on federal loans with federal funds for sugar the feds won't use. AND, those subsidies wouldn't be "necessary" if the federal government didn't drive down the price of high fructose corn syrup so that sugar can't compete in the market place by subsidizing the corn industry. You simply can't make this shite up.

 x2, that's exactly the crap I was referring to.

I remember having to read that article through twice, then make sure something like The Onion didn't make it since I couldn't believe what I was reading...after having read a few moments prior about Bloomberg's drink ban as well as all the hubub about obesity, healthcare, etc.

Where's my bailout? Seems like they're just giving them out left and right!

Sugar is not used in soft drinks here in the US. Mostly anyway.

That's another juiced in lobby, the corn producers lobby.

exactly -- HFCS is used as the sweetener in 90% of the sweetened foods out there. We don't drink much soda anyways, since sugar isn't exactly good for you (better than HFCS), but when we do, we spring for Mexican Coke (real cane sugar) -- I either just sounded like the most interesting man in the world, or scarface, take your pick ;)

I picked this little guy up the other day

Got to shoot one finally a couple weekends ago and enjoyed it, so part of my bonus(the rest set aside for fall fling :D) went toward it. You definitely know its a .45 when you fire it but it doesn't seem as bad as my current LC9 carry gun.

Nice! When I was looking for my Shield I kept having the hardest time not walking out of the shops with one of those....

Its a sweet little piece. I have an XD9 that I bought back a few years ago and its been flawless since, from the reviews it had and previous XD ownership it was a no brainer. I only bought my LC9 because they kept pushing back the XDS.

Figured I'd show you guys my other hobby. I've been making custom wooden hand grips for revolvers for a few years now. This is set that I made out of 4" x 8" piece of Canary Wood that I dried out in my basement since 2009.

This is what they look like before I apply the bedding compound:

This is after 15-20 coats of clear and A LOT of buffing using a specialized 3M compound that's for wood.

And here's the finished product installed on the firearm. This particular revolver is my neighbor's Taurus .44 Mag. Custom made it to fit his hand. The one to the right is a stubby-style grip made out of an exotic Bubinga wood.

Between the two, I have about 25 hours into them.

That's pretty cool man.

way cool, nice craftsmanship!

Thanks guys! My Dad showed me how to do this many years ago. But he uses a whittler knife and I use a dremel. He says that I'm a cheater. lol

If any of you ever want a set, let me know. I'd need to borrow your stripped-down pistol for a few days to fit the grip to the frame. I charge about $150.00 plus the cost of the wood (which is like $10.00 depending on the rarity of the wood).

I'm a utilitarian with a plastic sub-compact, but maybe someday I'll have something worthy of a custom grip... I'll pass your work along to some friends who might as well.

This.......well that and i'm in Indiana.....

So what would be some decent rifles to look at for Elk and Deer hunting? I am new to the hunting scene and am looking for advice. I plan on hiking deep into the woods and don't want something really heavy. Also what is a good all around round for what I plan to use it for. Not looking to spend a small fortune on one. Prefer a bolt action.

Based on what you said, I am really happy with the Remington 700 based on overall availability, cost, and quality. Alot of people like the fat bull barrel but that gets heavy for tromping through the wood so just a standard barrel. I have I .300 Win Mag but keep in mind that is one expensive round. I would recommend looking into a .308. for cost...maybe .30-06 for the Elk

Lots of aftermarket support for the Remington 700 as well

Oh and last thought. Scope>Rifle...On a rifle like that the scope should be the larger portion of your budget then the rifle itself, imo. Maybe decide on the round, pick the scope in your budget, then figure out what rifle to put under it.

From left are the .308, .30-’06, .300 WSM,
ûand .300 Win. Mag.

Agreed. The 700 is a wonderful rifle. Mine is in a .308 and I handload my munitions at about 165gr for elk. No ballastic tip or anything special. I've heard of guys increasing their grain to 185+ but I can't comment on the downrange characteristics on that heavy of a round. Shot placement always trumps rifle or round.

I have a very soft spot in my heart for Leupold sights, but if you're on a budget try the Nikon Prostaff in 3-9x50. I think theyre about $199. Check Amazon. Excellent scope for the money.

I've got the NF NXS 5.5-22x50 on my 700 and I'm getting 2" groups at 800yrd depending on the wind, terrain, and how drunk I am (I kid, I kid). Pricey scope, but if you're looking to make a long range it's the best one I've found for me.

Good luck.

Jim

I also agree about the 700, mine was a damn good rifle. it was a .243, if it were .308 i would still have it. .243 ammo is stupid expensive so I got rid of it and got a .17hmr. its a little more suited for Indiana.

ya got to remember a elk weighs around 2 300 lbs, don't go so far back in the woods ya can't get the game out .and don't shoot one across a canyon.

Joe -- I just went through this, as I am new to hunting as well (took my safety class last month and am working through the applications for this falls' draw right now!). I talked to literally dozens of hunters, and while many had their personal preferences for 700 or 300 winmags, the consensus on a combo deer/elk rifle was a 30.06, due to the common and relatively inexpensive nature of the ammo (used to be!) at least in part, but still with the power to take down an elk. I lurked on armslist for a few weeks and ended up scoring a weatherby (vanguard) wood stocked model with a 1/2 decent site for $400. That was before the latest round of zombie panic, however, so prices may be escallating. If you're buying new, I have a friend who can get you the same rifle under the Howa brand at something like $725.

I just finished my class yesterday. I plan to mainly bow hunt over the counter elk licenses but if I want to go rifle hunting I want the ability to go. If i get what i want bow hunting earlier in the season i wont go for rifle season. I was leaning towards the 30.06 as everyone I have talked to says its a pretty universal round. I was told by several people to check out the Stevens 200/ Savage XP for my needs. It's an entry level rifle but I think it will fit my needs for the amount I will be using it for. Anyone have some experiance with the Savage line? Been reading online and it's mixed reviews.

no personal experience with Savage, but a whole lot of experienced riflemen that told me to stay away like it was soaked in skunk piss. Its like a winch, when you need it, you need it. If you spend the better part of a day hiding in the brush and sneaking up on an animal, you get a perfect side view for the shot, and then your entry level rifle misfires, you may be angry enough to beat the elk to death with it... that may, however, not be entirely a legal kill...
