gps? which one

i had found a 540c i believe it is. and i really liked it. i just kinda wanted to get some input from some of the guys you know. well im gonna keep my eyes peeled for some more deals

What gps units,... ...,I'm looking but i haven't decided on what to buy yet.
What is your planned usage? Using it for navigation while trail-running? Or are you going racing?
It makes a difference.
I use a portable Garmin 60CSx in my DD, and it works fine. 'Has something like a 2" screen(in color). 'Screen might be a little small for fine details, but for navigation it works great.

In the race truck we have a Lowrance 480. It's similar to the -540(older version) and doesn't have color. It has a 5"(diagonal) screen. I don't know how much difference color would make, but a bigger screen would be useful at speed.

well it would be for a prerunner not a race rig. i also found a 6200c for a good price. but after long hard thoughts today i think im gonna buy my cage before the gps. i have to prioritize my build

Showoff,...

I want,.... :tears:

Ok, so I will admit, I started with the 540, and it was PERFECT for the Jeep, but when I stepped up into the Bronco, it is so much roomier inside, I had room to upgrade

For that money you could probably pick up a used toughbook and run Delorme Street Atlas or something. Wouldn't be as easy to mount or use while driving, but if you want a PC in the truck anyway for some reason...

The main use for the big Lowrance is so the co-driver can make out the track and read the warnings when booming across the desert at speeds in excess of R.

Edit: also has enough storage to hold all the waypoints on a 1K mile race.

The new HD Lowrance is the bomb. We put one in our race truck and it is
really cool. The 3d would be really bitchin for wheeling. Plus the speed of the zoom is worth every penny.

Delorme Street Atlas isn't going to have race maps loaded in it... unless it accepts lowrance maps.

Not to mention, while toughbooks are... well tough, they're not tough enough to handle what we put them through.

I have a question to add to this... I have a 7" monitor already mounted in my dash that was hooked up to a clarion navigation system years ago. Are there any GPS units suitable for prerunning that I could hook into the RCA inputs of this monitor? I'm debating ripping it out and cutting the dash up again to fit a lowrance unit in there but I'd rather keep the screen and be lazy :D

So, your G1 isn't capable of this? Shame shame. Now you need to get a better phone and call it good.

what the hell are you talking about? what phone functions as a GPS that can load race course maps and is capable of outputting to a video screen?
Most windows mobile phones that are GPS capable can run any maps and can be output either via a/v cable, usb, or usb to a/v out. And I was just partially giving you crap. androids OS 2.1 should be much better than the current version tho, also.
