generic oil change question

After running the motor you've got to wait at min 5 min's before checking the dipstick, even then pull it out and whipe it down about 3 times, on the third time look at the back side of the dip stick it will show the amount. I've noticed when I pull out my dipstick there seem's to be alot of oil in it yet I think it's simply from oil being up in the end of the dipstick tube, or dripping from the bottom of the crankshaft on to the dip stick. Lastly like the previous post's have stated, if you've put in 6qt's. you've got nothing to worry about.

is your oil pan dented?

I don't think so...I'll have to check. I just picked this thing up a few days ago, so I'm slowly learning about its querks.

Yeah, I let it ran, even took it for a short test drive, and still checks out high.

I'm probably the worst auto hypocondrack you guys have ever seen. I get nervous about almost any noise I hear from the engine, which really sucks, cuz from what I've read there is considerable valve noise in the 4.0...kinda reminds me of a sewing machine.

did you let it idle he is asking. after running the oil has been flowing and will read high. wait for it too cool down, then take the dipstick out, wipe it down, reinsert, and pull again. thats your level (at running temp)

Don't feel bad....I was the same way. Now i'm not too paranoid with noises on the XJ....any other vehicle I drive and it's right back to paranoid mode.

What brand oil filter and number did you use. I do mine, 5qt bottle and 1qt bottle, Mobil-1 filter or K&N and don't worry about it. I do check for drips for 5 min after a change before I pull the pad out from underneath that I lay on. I also write down the mileage on the filter with a sharpie so I can see it.

I used a Fram Oil filter...good tip w/the sharpie on the filter...this is the first vehicle I've ever had where you could see it from the engine bay.

Loose the fram, try a Mobil-1, K&N or NAPA gold/Wix filter.

Just read through this thread...6 qts??????

Both of my cherokees only ever held five. One was a 94 and one is a 97. Both 4.0's. What gives? BTW before you tell me I'm checking it wrong, I'm not.

Ok I would like to know how many people think this is a good idea. You change your oil and then you refill it until the dipstick reads full then run the engine for about a minute and then check the dipstick again and add more oil until it reads full again.
With a Jeep, just put in the 6 quarts and you're good. What you're saying is definately a must for semi-trucks though because the oil filters need to fill up(usually takes a little over a gallon of oil) and then engine needs to be topped back off to the full mark on the dipstick.

All Jeep 4.0's hold 6 quarts of oil. What do you mean they only hold 5? Are you draining 5 out and only putting 5 back in?

Has anyone ever checked their oil level cold (say below 40 F) before a morning start up, and then rechecked it after a good 30 minute warm up run (oil at or above 210 F), let the oil drain say 5 minutes, then check the dip stick 5 minutes after shut down and then compared the readings on the dip stick?

Liquids (like oil) do expand to a larger volume as they get hotter! After reading this tread I am now curious how large that effect is. I know it can be quite significant with water in a tank.
