Fuel line connector

It's the 88 MJ today. 4.0L, 5 speed, Lifted 3" ala bootleg/bastard.

Pulled my old crusty and leaking fuel rail off the MJ, including the injectors. Updated them with Bosch 19# injectors, and a new to me shiny fuel rail, pressure regulator and heat shield. All went fine...UNTIL...I realized that the plastic connectors I had (w/the o-rings) were the wrong size...wouldn't fit into the fuel pressure reg. or main fuel line.

So I know that these things are widely available in the HELP! section of most auto parts stores. I went to NAPA and got Chevy/Chrysler connectors. Heard I should have gotten Ford connectors.

Help me Obi Wan, which connectors should I get. Anybody got a size, part number etc.

Thanks.

OEM quick disconnect (P/N 1-83502745) this contains the clip, 2 o-rings and a nylon spacer, i think you can still buy them as Mopar kit for about $15... You can go to the help section in say an Autozone store and find something similar for a little cheaper.

Napa has them in their catalog at the store. The picture looks different but they work. Have you considered just changing the o-rings? I've done that successfully.

This is what I do. Just go to the local hardware and match the sizes with the O ring chart. Fuel line O rings are generally a tan color and are of a different elasticity but i have had good luck with plain old black "butyl" o-rings. Use some vaseline on them to install.

OK,

So I got the connectors and o-rings. The difference is that the original "clip" has a little nipple at the end where the new one does not. My Q is does that nipple make a difference. I set it up on the male end (towards firewall, renix) clip, o-ring, spacer and pushed it on. But there's play. It is firmly affixed but there is about 1/16" or 1/8" of push/pull room...doesn't seem like a nice tight seal (there is a walrus joke in there but that's another post).

Do I need a fatter o-ring to compensate for the lack of a nipple on the new connector? I tried an injector o-ring, same i.d. but quite a bit larger o.d. so that I don't have play in that connection??

EDIT: I went out and checked the connections again treid a fatter o-ring, seemed to have less play....turned the key on...seal not working AT ALL!

I have to walk away from it for the rest of the day. Going to beat the wife and kick the dog

the two different connectors are different sizes iirc.

Honestly I just used fuel hose and full circle fuel injection hose clamps and it hasn't given me a problem yet. I hate quickdisconnects with a passion.

he's in CA Ken, it won't pass emissions inspection with clamps on there.

OP, try hitting the junkyard and pulling the pieces you need if you can't find the right ones at the parts store and need it running today. That's what I did and it's been fine for 3 years.

WTF!

CA sucks. That is all.

So do I...I thought about the clamp idea on the fuel line. I got rid of all the tranny line disco's with clamps & barbs. I thought the front was 3/8" but they are both 5/16" and the guts (when I took them apart) look identical.

I did not know that...I'll ask my smog guy...when we BBQ tomorrow.

WTF!

CA sucks. That is all.

:tears::bawl::cry:

I moved here from Minnesota when I was 3 weeks old. If I'd only known there would be stricter emissions controls...I would have stayed.

Glad to report that this problem is FIXED!

I couldn't get over the amount of play, and the fact that I thought I had it set up right. I also could not for the life of me figure out why it wasn't working...so I went on TeamCherokee.com to see if I could find the actual Jeep part. It is there, but it's a 3/8" fitting. I measured the metal line coming in...sure enough 5/16". Just like the clips I had.

More importantly I looked at the SET-UP on the TC.com pic. It's O-RING - SPACER - O-RING. So I just went and bought 4 nitrile 5/16" I.D. o-rings matched up to what came out. Ba-da-bing, I experienced that *click*. Fired it up and let it run for bout 10 mins, anywhere from idle to WOT. No leaks...tighter than my first girlfriend.

Me happy now!! Thanks for all the input and head scratching, very much appreciated.

It's absolutely amazing to me that this does not get more ink. These things are common, but try to find them...OR any info on them. Major PITA. That's my two line rant, it's cocktail time.

Really he was just using slang to describe not repairing a vehicle in a propper manner. He wasn't using it to put anyone down, thus making it ok in my book. I don't get mad everytime a see a cracker barrel resturaunt sign.

are you aware of what a cracker barrel is? it's completely different from the slang term "cracker", FYI, making this an invalid comparison.

Guys, if you're going to yell at someone for something like that, feel free to do so, IMO he was out of line. But please don't quote the full post because it makes it more annoying to clean up.

ESPECIALLY do not quote spam posts, or if you do, please remove the links. Just use the report button and forget about it, we usually clean spam up pretty fast.
