Fuel Economy/ScanGaugeII Discussion

And as far as my comment of the top of this page, I figured out that different stations have different stopping points for filling up. Last trip I took home was 23mpg on the highway, which dropped to an average of 22.7 when I got into town to fill up. The scan gauge reported 2.38 or so gallons used and when i filled up it was 2.36 or so. So once you calibrate the speed it's pretty accurate. I've got 235's and it came with 225's stock. And btw, this trip was done over 55 miles, 50 of which are on highway using 87 octane at 60-65mph. No tailing of trucks this time either.

I actually had my first one sent back. One of the buttons kept getting stuck and it would cycle through the entire thing. They took it back no questions asked, paid for shipping and everything. Send them an email and I'm sure they'll try to help you out.

Yep, thats why the instructions recommend filling up at the exact same pump for the first few fills to get the % error correct.

XJ01-08- Try this if you have not already. MORE>MORE>MODE>Auto
If that does not work, then try: MORE>MORE>MODE>ISO

Did you get the Scangauge new or used BTW?

Destroyer, do you have any idea why it has trouble reading open loop conditions? When I'm WOT, it'll rarely refresh and sometimes shut off. Occasionally I'll get a 14.2psi MAP which is at least ballpark to ambient at 14.5, bot this is only half the time. The other half is a blank screen.

Honestly, no. I haven't really even used it for monitoring MAP, but I have noticed that sometimes it does take a while for it to refresh other functions (current MPG, horsepower, etc.) I'm not sure if this is an issue with the Scangauge itself, or the Jeep's computer. I have it in a '99 btw. If I remember, I will look into the MAP issue tomorrow and see if mine does the same.

New, just arrived friday and i sent them an email but it kinda sucks getting it and its not working but i will try the ISO and Auto and see

Does anyone know what the differences are with the california emissions package? And does any of this affect the ECU operation?

Is there any way for me to lower my idle speed? I remember seeing a screw on the bottom of the throttle body that'd allow me to adjust the initial angle of the butterfly but with a 98, does the IAC just compensate?

I think it will stay the same i tried to raise mine a bit and it didnt work.

Well i talked to the people who make scanguage and they said i probally have a faulty unit so theyre going to send me a new one with a label to ship the old one back

Sometimes i wonder if they just refurbish them and hope for the best haha. Anyways, I wish I could lower my idle down to 700rpm. Sometimes it's 750-800 but other times it'll hang above 1000rpm. .80-.90 gallons per hour is a lot to waste.

MPGs were around 22-23 again until I found my new best friend, some semi was travelling 60-65mph so i followed him from maybe 5 car lengths (tough to judge) but enough for me to see his mirrors (as in he can see me) and I got anywhere from 30-40mpg. Assuming this scangauge is correct sweet deal! The load got cut in half as well. MAP was typicall 8.5psi, when i closed throttle it was around 3-4psi.

Not to hijack, but my friends and I were discussing this today. My one friend said you needed to be like on the trucks ass for it to make a difference. So, if the ScanGauge is correct (which I WILL be buying one this summer when I can afford it) and the engine load halved and mpg almost doubled, all at 5 or so car lengths? That's pretty sweet if it's true. I will be doing this for every trip back and forth to school from now on.

It's tough to judge but it was at least a 30% gain within 40-50 feet. It's very noticeble but I haven't done it since the last trucker got pretty mad (and I don't blame him) so im gonna stop until I can afford a CB. There was a mythbusters about it before and they used a dodge magnum and noticed big gains. With our aero it's great. And btw, my mpg's at 75-80mph was typically 18-19mpg. I just wish I had a long straightaway for me to take several tests and average them.

What did the guy do? I have a CB but never use it. I think the fuse is blown, I'll have to check. It did occur to me that it might come in handy for that.

I drive 100 miles to school on 31's and 4.5" and noticed that according to the semi-accurate gas gauge I used about 1/8 tank less at the same cruise control speeds without my big roofrack and 4 Hellas. That put me back to where I was without the roofrack and 30's. If I could squeeze another 1/8 or even a 1/16 that would be SWEET.

He switched lanes, so i did, then he went back quick so i figured that was a sign to back off. Wind has a huge factor with us, especially at high speeds so I may still find a truck to follow, even from a larger distance id still be happy.

well i just got a new scanguage from them, pluged it in and in like 2 secs it was connected and i found out why i am getting bad gas mileage, it wont go out of closed loop, most likely bcause the downstream o2 sensors are disconnected so wont be fixed til i get some o2 simulators

Closed loop is where you should be. Open loop only during warmup and WOT. Downstream O2 sensors have nothing to do with closed or open loop. Only the upstream sensor input is used to control A/F mixture during closed loop.
