Fuel Economy/ScanGaugeII Discussion

I know I can't really afford it, but I decided to buy a ScangaugeII the other day. Anyone else on here have one? I believe MaxJohnson did back in April from one of my other threads but I think that was about it. It's got some pretty cool features on it including
DIGITAL GAUGESDisplay 4 gauges at a time from the 12 built-in digital gauges. the information is presented in Real-time!
  • Fuel Economy
  • Fuel Rate
  • Battery Voltage
  • Coolant Temperature
  • Intake Air Temperature
  • Engine Speed (RPM)
  • Vehicle speed (MPH)
  • Manifold Pressure (not available on some vehicles)
  • Engine Load
  • Throttle Position
  • Ignition Timing
  • Open/Closed Loop
I went out for a test on the highway (its tough without cruise control working) to keep the speed/throttle position steady but it seemed at either 55mph or 60mph I was getting about 22-23mpg, and at 75-80mph I was getting around 17.5-18mpg. I'll update down the road when I get it completely calibrated. I guess you can adjust the "tire size" towards making the trip average on the computer equal to what it actually was. And for who is wondering I've got a 98, 4.0, aw4, 231, 3.55 gears and 235/75R15s. It had 225's originally so the speedo is off by 3% or w/e which I already adjusted for. If anyone's got questions about the values I've got feel free. If anyone wants to swap 215's, 225's or 31's to see how much of a mpg change there is then im up for it.

Anyone know how much humidity affects performance? It was kind of foggy when I was doing these tests, does the water in the air have a cooling effect making performance better? Maybe more O2 from the water than air?

I have a Scangauge II in my company 07 Wrangler...

Works great. I tried messing with the formulas (37" tires and 4.88 gears from the original 3.21 gears and 30" tires) for setting the speedometer, but the most effective method was tailing a completely stock vehicle and using that speed. I then verified it with radar boards on the highway.

Yeah I'd think you could use a GPS to match up the speeds too. Does the wrangler have a computer in it stock that'll tell you mpgs? And if so, how do the numbers compare between the scangauge and the oem unit?

Do you know how the scangauge calculates the fuel used? They must do something with calculating how much the injectors put out or something. I wish I had a standard to calculate a lot of things out, it's tough with an auto because it'll downshift right when you dont want it to. Do you know what kind of OBDII "language" xj's use?

here is another thread about the scan gauge. I am going to get one also. Is there any of the options that don't work on the XJ?
I put my 2 cents over there if you wanna check it out. I couldnt clear a DTC and the fuel pressure doesnt work but everything else was pretty damn accurate (at least i hope so because my fuel economy seemed higher than i expected). Im having a slight problem with one of the buttons being possibly faulty and locking up which pissed me off but other than that so far so good, I'll see what their service dept says about it. If you go to http://www.3n1autocomputer.com/ its $10 cheaper.

I've only dealt with 1 guy over there, his name is Joey...

From my experiences with the company, they seem top notch.

Ive talked to a guy named Ron at scangauge, he seemed pretty knowledgeble. Seems like a small company with a great product, I just hope their warranty work is top notch as well haha.

Just the Renix high points: poor flowing heads, smaller throttle body opening, smaller injectors, less air and less gas...

EGR too.

Got some more numbers from my trip back to school. At 60mph, timing was typically 34-36 degrees. MPGs were around 22-23 again until I found my new best friend, some semi was travelling 60-65mph so i followed him from maybe 5 car lengths (tough to judge) but enough for me to see his mirrors (as in he can see me) and I got anywhere from 30-40mpg. Assuming this scangauge is correct sweet deal! The load got cut in half as well. MAP was typicall 8.5psi, when i closed throttle it was around 3-4psi.

It said my trip average was 22mpg but when I filled up (it was a 50 miles trip), it said I got 18mpg. My only question with that is how much do stations/brands vary when you hit the part where it "clicks" and cuts off fuel for you? I know its the case with these two at home so im hoping thats what it is. I think the reason it shuts off is when the little holes in the nozzle start recognizing fuel hitting it. On a side note, when i filled up before the trip i held the nozzle all the way, and when i was filling up at school i was holding it enough to put gas in steadily. Do you guys think that it just might not have splashed around enough when I filled in at school allowing me to get more fuel in making my scangauge off?? I'll try again when I head home and use mobil in both cases this time.

Is the vehicle engine running? It'll power down the screen if you just have it plugged in the ON position. If you just hit the bottom right button then it should turn back on. If you're driving around and it shuts off, check your connections. Try the other input in the back or on the side. If it's under open loop conditions as far as WOT, it has problems and won't report but rather shut off. I emailed the tech support and they said some chrysler vehicles have this problem.
