ElDorado Forest Trail Closures

im down to help build barricades and wheel in supplies and donate cash and time to help with the studies.

That is a good approach. What I am confused about however, is why the Forst Service has not partnered with someone to formally adopt some of these trails (speaking mostly of Deer Valley). Seems like adopting the trail is the way to go for organizing trail maintenance and work days, similar to FOTR and FOF.

I believe Shark Mark and a few others were trying to adopt it in the name of NAXJA but it was not orphaned.

I can't remember what club offically adopted it...

I believe the South Valley Trail-Riders 4x4 Club has adopted Deer Valley. Not to say that another club couldn't also...

This list came from Friends of the Eldorado National Forest

Barrett Lake 4WD
Hi-Landers

Strawberry Creek 4WD
Gold Hills Posse

Throughout the multiple threads we have going on this I decided to post it here. People, please email the supervisors, and the contacts they sent me. Get involved! Here is my conversation with the board of supervisors of El Dorado National Forest.

"Dear Supervisors,

My Name is Chris Divine. I enjoy hiking, camping, fishing, sightseeing, and OHV use in your county. I take trips to your county on average of 4 times a year. Each time spending around $400-$500. We are all aware of the trail closures that took place in the El Dorado National Forest. I do not support the trail closures, although I will abide by the ruling, I will not be visiting El Dorado County as much this year. Actually I am only planning one trip. I would like to have your support against the ruling. I am not a resident of your county, but like I stated earlier, I am a tourist. If the very attractions I come to see are no longer available to me, there is no reason for me to come.

The response:

"Christopher,

Supervisor Nutting, and the entire Board of Supervisors, were caught off guard on the closures until the order came down from the judge. Because it is a court order, there is nothing the County can do. There will be a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) which will give the public the opportunity to comment. The Board will be submitting a comment and would encourage all citizens to do the same. Our office will be working closely with the El Dorado County Citizens Coordination Committee (EDCCC) on this issue, and those in the future, to assure we are informed at the ground floor and involved in the process.

To keep informed on the status of he SEIS, II would suggest you contact Frank Mosbacher, our local Public Relations Officer for the Eldorado National Forest at
530) 621-5268. The USFS needs to be made aware the effects this is having on our community. It is also just as important to contact Washington on all closures as there may be more.

Another good contact is Tim Roffe, Chair of the EDCCC, who is intimately involved in this and other forest issues. His email [email protected].

Watch the newspaper for a press release on the Board's position.

Thank you.

Ray Nutting

I went down to the annual Cal4Wheel meeting yesterday and the first half of the meeting was dedicated to talking about these closures.

It was a very productive meet and the County and Forest service are working hard to get through this as quickly as possible. They also made mention that these trails and even the Rubicon would not be open at all if it were not for our attachment to these trails and our efforts to keep them maintained and educating everyone about trail use.

The best thing we can do in this situation is honor the court order. Any motorized use on these trails will result in continued litigation and will drag this whole process out.

The trails are open to all forms of non-motorized use. Instead of wheeling Deer Valley for SierraFest it may be a good idea to hike the trail as a club and document to condition of the meadows. Stopping any motorized travel and education campers is also a hi concern. The county is working on finalizing the closure list and I will post the new map when it comes out.

Have a good time hiking those trails guys, don't forget to carry your Sierra Club cards! Just kidding!

Seriously though, you can of course do what you want but that's not my choice of recreation.

I actually really like this idea. Maybe wheel to the rocks at the top (or wherever the tail ends) and take a stroll on foot a little further.

And thanks for the time you are putting into this with your maps and such!

The trailhead is at Hermit Valley Campground so it is current closed starting there through Lower Blue Lake.

So they're closing it right at the trailhead? I was under the impression that they would keep the trail open to until it comes up on a meadow or creek crossing - whichever happens to come first.

Sorry if I missed something... I wouldn't be surprised if I did!

:dunno:

First I would like to say that I am a Cal4Wheel member.
I would like to clear a few thing up; the meeting at the Cal4Wheel Club House April 14th was not a Cal4Wheel meeting. This was a Friends Of The Rubicon meeting, Cal4wheel lets them use the club house. I could not make the meeting I was supporting a of couple buggy clubs at Frank Raines.

In Cal4Wheel’s news flash on April 15th they state “CA4WDC and AMA D36 stepped in and represented OHV interests. NO OTHER GROUP WAS WILLING TO STEP IN AND BECOME INVOLVED.” I feel this statement was not needed; it was printed in bold lettering. Ca4Wheel and BRC chose to fight this on their own instead of inviting other originations’, the Counties or anyone else affected by this law suit. Is this why we lost this battle? I don’t know but I do know that there is strength in numbers!

I believe it is time for all forest users to band together to Keep Our Public Land Open to the Public! This includes buggies, bikers both motor and peddle, hikers, kayaker, hunter, rock hounders, miners, loggers and ranchers.
No one group has the fund to battle the CBD! Join every origination can afford!

I wasn't involved in this lawsuit in any way nor was I informed prior to the press release of anything. That being said... I believe the statement-

"Ca4Wheel and BRC chose to fight this on their own instead of inviting other originations’" is an unfair statement. I have no doubt these organizations would've LOVED others to get involved. Further, had help been offered I'm sure they would've gladly accepted. To imply that Cal4Wheel and BRC wanted to do this on thier own and hog all the glory is just plain incorrect.

I do agree we need to work together, which is why we all should be Cal4Wheel and BRC members.

As i understood it the trail is completly closed pending revisions. If there is a good place to turn around before the meadow the fs will open thetrail up until that point.

Its up to us to suggest these points, i doubt they know of many. Gps points and pictures of possible locations will be helpful.
