Dom?

Another J.Off who thinks he knows something has to come in with info that has already been covered and of course has to leave his dim witted wise a$$ comment...go jump in a lake lemming, who invited you here...have you ever even seen DOM, you tool?

XJguy

Well the fact that I worked at a pipe and tube mill as a mill line supervisor making the shiat for 3 years probably gives me a tad bit more knowledge in the subject that what you read in your adventures as a web wheeling poser.

this is nasty shit.

this is HREW....

THIS is a visible seam....

when you compare a seam like this to a seam on DOM, you will understand why a few of us are saying that a dom seam is "almost invisible"....and from the OUTSIDE of most DOM tubing sections I've seen, ya just can't see it...

posting pictures of dom momentarily

Man where do you get that square from...that is terrible seam control, that bundle you show with the seam nearly in the corner is less than desirable. When we were making the stuff it was out of spec (scrap) if we had the seam that close to the corner. That hrew you show with the seam really bright blue was not normalized (the annealing after the welding).

maybe we need a "post pics of your DOM" thread???

So you want me to take a picture of my tube and post it here for you to gawk at??? man you are sicker than I thought ;)

DOH! hehehe that is funny shit!

DOM (Drawn-over-mandrel) is a cold drawn electric resistance welded tube with all flash removed. Each tube is tested for soundness of weld. Preferred over seamless tubing for its excellent OD & ID concentricity. Normalizing and cold drawing over a mandrel makes DOM a uniform and precision product.

Thats from one of my supliers web site and if you read one of the post above with the square tubing, the tubing moves while you read the statment below but hey it could be the beer.

So if I was going to build a roll cage should I use DOM?
Either way what size tubing should I get?

I like DOM for cages....my favorite flavor is .120 wall 1.5 and 1.75 diamter....

URF sanctioned that sanction

That is really up to you, or if youre going to use your Jeep to compete with then its up to the rule book. DOM will be stronger but quite a bit more costly, some feel its overkill...I do not. Most commercially available roll cage kits are not made with DOM, instead they use WERW, which is cheaper and will probably be just as effective in saving your life, though you may get a bit more tweaking of your XJ chassis if you do roll....course if you have deep pockets go 4130, best stuff out there, but you pay a premium price and it has to be TIG welded....some say you can MIG it..but that kinda negates the purpose of using 4130 IMHO.

For the weight of the average XJ, 1.75" x 0.120" wall tubing would be ideal.

In competition I have seen requirements of 2.00" tubing if the vehicle has no roof and still exceeds 4000lbs

Here you go again talking about something you really know nothing about! Most production work is done with MIG and the "weld yeild strength is extremely close" to the base metal.Check the "wire" it already has minute quantities of the base material and picks up the rest during the welding process.

BTW:Chromoly aircraft frames are Oxy/Actylene welded !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

there he goes folks, rounding the second corner with yet another competiton reference! That xjguy must be one of those jeeping competitors you read about in magazines....

Wow, Xjguy, it sure is a good thing we have you around, if it wasn't for you, I'm sure the rest of us would be making a bunch of non-competition-approved cages for our jeeps......

and that would suck, because you know, anyone that mentions tubing or rollcages on this forum must be getting ready for another season of sanctioned competition.

can I have your autograph?

LOL...what a tool...first off bucko, I dont know what forum you think this is but I thought we were talking about automobiles, with that in mind, I DARE YOU to prove me wrong about my TIG welding remark in autosports...For that matter I have done some reading up on 4130 as it pertains to homebuilt aircraft, I dont know what country you are referencing but here in the USA planes Ive seen written about were TIG welded. Go to any welding site and they all will say the same thing..."for best penetration using 4130, TIG weld". You cannot not even compete with a non TIG welded 4130 cage.

I have welded 4130 with a MIG...would I weld a whole cage or chassis this way...no way. You did your suspension with a MIG whoopee for you, I also know of a guy who jumped from a plane and survived with no parachute...sometimes you get lucky; and it certainly does not make it right. What a phallus.
