too many marked up oem d44s for sale online.... go get your own

Getting a D44 is low priority for me since I am driving a stock XJ (for now). But I drool every time I see a post like this. Someone please educate me.

How difficult is it to pull a D44 in the boneyard, how long does it take, is it a one man job, any special tools needed, does one have to bring jacks and jack stands? About how much does a D44 weigh? Do the people at boneyards help load the axle in the truck, say for a tip? Is D44 a direct bolt-in swap for a D35 from Renix era?

I haven't been to a boneyard in many many years. I am wodering in case I loose my mind one day and go to a boneyard and find a D44.

Thanks all

How difficult is it to pull a D44 in the boneyard,
easy.
how long does it take,
about an hour and a half if the bolts are hard to get off
is it a one man job,
yes
any special tools needed
a basic socket set and a good cutter to cut the brake hose (easier than taking it off and you should replace it anyway)
, does one have to bring jacks and jack stands?
i would bring a jack but leave it in the car till you are sure you need it. most of them are already supported. dont bring jack stands, use a bunch of wheels that are always laying around.
About how much does a D44 weigh?
i dunno but i would say feels like 150 or so...
Do the people at boneyards help load the axle in the truck, say for a tip?
i never asked. if you dont mind getting dirty you can manhandle it in there.
Is D44 a direct bolt-in swap for a D35 from Renix era?
yes, but the driveshaft will be too long. if the donor jeep has the same tcase as yours take the driveshaft too. make sure you keep the ubolts and the plates, and try to keep the ebrake cables intact.

hope that helps ya a bit. its not that bad ive pulled 6 of em... just takes time and patience. it helps if you have a few beers before heading over, and try to bring a buddy.

I pulled the one "you cant get" @ wilmington (the stands were under the axle and not the body) in about 25 minutes Saturday.

Take an electric angle grinder. Cut through the parking brake lines and u-bolts and it goes very, very quickly.

Grimm, lots of good tips for me. Thanks a bunch.

Cal, 25 minutes? gee weez man, was that using both hands, LoL? Would love to see a SoCal time competition at a PnP place. It would take me that much time to just get done scratching my head on where to start. :laugh2:

Hey GauchoMD, some day, I can apply to my wife for an all day parole, and we can go down together and put our smarts to test :confused1 . I have a beater pickup we can use to hual the treasures.

I work in LA on the weekends, if you guys want a hand let me know. I was with Cal last weekend and that 44 is sitting in my garage with CV parts ready to go on it. Cal's not kidding about taking 20 minuets to get it out, and that was with a tire that had siezed lugs and a busted breaker bar. A battery powered angle grinder definitly helps with the Ebrake cables. Go early on saturday, they get picked over pretty quick.

willy51, thanks a bunch for your kind offer of help. I'll certainly keep it in my. I have 2 major priorities to take care of first, before I get ahead of myself and think about getting a D44. They are a cracked manifold and a very questionable 231 transfer case.

Well, i have a Tcase with a SYE that i keep meaning to put in, do you want my old paper weight when i get it out after the swap (given that the new one works) :). As far as the cracked manifold are you talking about the Y pipe? If so, bring you rig down to my shop some weekend and we'll do motor mounts, and weld up you Y pipe at the same time. I'm down in San Gabriel on the weekends.

Oh and just for the record, here's what the cost break down was,
Axle, (tell them it was out of a car) $149 + $15 core.
I allso picked up Crown Vic brake parts that included, rotors, calipers and brackets for a grand total of $133 including the core charges. ($297 all told)

are you guys taking these D44s for yourself, or for resale?

This was for use, not resale. I don't have time to go pull $150 axles to sell for $350.

Time to take this off the thread.

PMed you

That's not car axle price. That's jeep/truck price. Car would be around $113 out the door.

It was the "mini-van" price. I wasn't going to try and argue it down to a car price.

Yep, after dealing with the usual employees of the PAP (probably hired at the 7/11 beef jerky rack at 2 am) and fighting a wreck to give up the goods it wasnt worth the little extra coin. Just saying expect to pay 165 and if you go weekend after next it will be 85 (half price weekend on the 16th)
