Comanche MJ build thread.

cool thanks.

been super busy with school lately, I spent 6 friggin hours in the library today working on a final paper, glad thats over, decided to reward myself and spend a few hours on the jeep.

just got in and still not done with the radiator lines. getting pretty close though, snapped two pics to see the majority of the work.

will be working on this tomorrow as well, and probably finish the lines, so might even be testing the big jeep again this weekend too.

anyways heres some pics.

eesh.

any mechanicals go, you're screwed if they hit the lines.

mechanicals?

Im assuming you mean driveshaft? I don't know what else would hit the lines, and if so it'll most likely be the conduit. which will dent rather than break from what Ive seen.

I don't know, Im not a huge fan of how the lines are, but I don't really see another way.

Im not completely done with them yet, but I assure you they will be solid (EG: you can hang on them) the only thing I can see is the driveshaft going, and Im not too worried about breaking those 1410 u joints.

we'll see how it turns out, maybe I'll go another direction, even though I don't know what that direction will be. . . . .

No worries Mike. I'm thinking you can just buy a sheet of steel, its cheap right now. Then turn it into a sweet belly skid

we'll see if this can keep everything cool first, then I might do some kind of protection,

maybe just a driveshaft loop, to keep it from shooting towards the lines. that would be a simple fix.

Im hoping the pump doesn't have any problems pushing all this coolant.

I'll have some updates this weekend.

Awwww helll yea,

finished up the lines yesterday, went and put some water through them, expecting at least a couple leaks. . . . . . . . . . nothing, held water perfect, held pressure, was still overheating cause I couldn't get the air bubbles out. so tonight, I drove it out to the side yard and parked it nose up on a dirt hill, filled it up from the t stat housing. then turned it around and filled it up from the radiator in the back, and let all the air bubbles out.

got it running let it idle for about 20 minutes revving it up trying to dial in timing. didn't go over 180 degrees at all, (before the air bubbles were out it was instantly over 220) so its keeping pretty cool.

grounded out the park neutral switch also, and that helped, it now revs freely past 3k, all the way up to 4500 or 5000 smoothly.

Im making some good progress, but its still loading up pretty bad. getting some backfires and such. its still closed loop, and I think theirs more sensors to connect yet. Im about done with this wiring bs, I made a deal that if its not running right in a month, Im getting a carb. sorry gene, Im all about simplicity.

anyways, no pics, but some good progress.

Gene are you sure both axles have 4.10 gears?

I got it stuck on a big hill of loose dirt today just messing around, set it on the frame and high centered it, decided to try out 4 wheel drive for the first time, and the front tires were spinning twice as fast as the rears.

guess it was a good time to try out 4wd.

Im gonna take the shafts off later this week and verify gearing,

just what I needed.

rockwells anyone?

Well the front Ring gear says 4.10 or 4.11 on it, and the tag that was on the rear said 4.10, plus the rear I know the truck it was out of and nearly all it's history. Are you positive you shifted the 205 correctly? <----and nope I don't know the shift pattern.

haven't updated in a while, thought I would share what Ive been up to.

their have been a few changes made in the last month or so,

One thing I realized was I had some very bad axle wrap on the rear axle, I thought the leafs were the problem so I took them off and sure enough, they were shot, I had a set of leafs off a 96 ram 1500, that were in great shape, same width, and a couple inches longer, I made them work.

also put new spring perches on the axle, since I had some layin around and the stock ones on the axle were pretty bent up.

heres a pic with the new leafs, shackle angle is pretty bad, but its useable for now.

heres where the big changes came, I just couldn't get the tpi running right and was just done with it and all the bs electrical, I got a rochester quadrajet rebuilt and setup specifically for this motor, also a different fuel regulator that I could use with the pump I already had. engine bay is so much cleaner and easier to work on, not to mention how well it is running. this thing is fast!

100_0877.jpg

did a little flexin with it.

100_0852.jpg

also had a problem with the power steering pump bracket moving slighty and causing the belt to squeek, so I built this little bracket, problem solved.

100_0870.jpg

heres some misc. shots of it around the yard, and parked up on a hill to fill up with coolant, (trying to get all the air bubbles out)

I don't know if theirs still air in the system, but its overheating a little bit still, its seen 230 and thats too hot for me, I've got the radiator off the same 96 dodge with some 16" electric fans on it that I'll probly hook up this weekend, its easily twice the size of the radiator thats on it now.
we'll see if that does it.

oh yea, finally got the grill put back together and the headlights wired up. I have some trailer lights that I found in the shop that I'll wire up too, so I have brake lights and running lights in the rear.

100_0868.jpg

thats it for now, Im uploading a video right now that I'll post a little bit later.

I'm not a big fan of carburetors, but that thing looks pretty sick! Hopefully it'll perform as well as a fuel injected engine.

I parked it on that hill, which is about the biggest angle it will ever see, and it didn't sputter at all after a few minutes of idling.

I researched carbs for a while before switching over, and it seems the quadrajet and truck avengers are the only carbs for offroad. I chose the quadrajet for its simplicity.

Nice. I'm glad to see the ole girl running!

well, took it down to the cliffs for its first run, overall went pretty well.

here it is loaded up on the trailer

going through the first trail, the creek
thats a bit tougher than last time, the green trail around the park used to be sort of flat, now theres a lot of rocks and stuff.

cliffs8-8-09014.jpg

found my first problem, if you look real close at the front shackles you'll see they inverted, that happens whenever I try and climb short steep inclines.

cliffs8-8-09033.jpg

my buddy harper doing the tire pit, he's on locked dana 44's with 37" h1 tires and rims.

cliffs8-8-09077.jpg

Now, from the shackles inverting, (happened 3 times) it caused the pinion to turn down, which eventually killed my front driveshaft, so in this picture, I was in 2 wheel drive.

cliffs8-8-09092.jpg

still 2 wheel drive, I was able to put it back in 4 and the driveshaft "kind of worked" with a loud clunking noise, and i crawled right out of this hole.

cliffs8-8-09095.jpg

after I got out, found the ball and socket part between the 2 upper u joints had snapped in half. pretty good carnage, I'll have to get a pic of it.

heres my squeegy, saved the day, made all the difference since my wipers aren't wired up.

cliffs8-8-09120.jpg

thats all I got for now, working on fixing a few bugs, and trying to find a 1 ton front end so I can get a locker in their before this years winterfest. which I will be at if all goes well.

are your front shackles inverted in this pic by chance?

the angle of your front driveshaft seems awfully steep where it comes together with the dif.
