Clutch fan upgrade

I have a 2001 XJ, 4.0 I6, AW4 with AC. I wanted to do a HD clutch fan upgrade and searching this forum it seems the NAPA part number is 272310.

Will this fit a 2001 XJ ?

Is the HD fan much louder than the OEM fan?

Are there any other suitable fans I could use?

Thanks for any advice

Yeah, the fan's a bit louder, but when you figure all or mud terrain tires are loud, aftermarket exhaust is loud, and my stereo's loud... I don't even notice it.

i had a heavy duty fan clutch on my 96 for a year. got sick of the loudness and the loss of power so i took it off and put on an electric fan instead.

As far as cooling the heavy duty worked much better.

I have a ZJ HD fan on my XJ, no excessive noise issues, great cooling upgrade. Worth every decibel.

Just to clarify.... The HD thermostatic fan clutch for the XJ is the standard duty for the ZJ. The HD fan for the ZJ will not fit the XJ.
Recently I discovered that the manufacturers have upgraded the parts listings to show that the ZJ standard duty fan clutch is the only listing for the XJ.

I recently did this on my 2001. NAPA part 272310 fits just fine. The noise is minimal and I don't even notice it anymore. It runs right at the thermostat temp now. I noticed no loss of power, but a slight dip in MPG's, but it's worth it.

I recently did this to my '95 which still has the original OEM 2-row radiator and running a new OEM 195* t-stat.
Not much louder, no real noticable loss of power, and temps haven't risen above 210*-212*. Auxilliary fan has yet to come on.
Haven't wheeled it yet, but maintaining 210*-212* during an extended idle in 80* weather on the mechanical fan alone sure was a nice surprise...

The ZJ HD fan clutch for the 97-98 WILL fit the XJ; the ZJ MAX COOL fan clutch will not.

NAPA 272310 ZJ HD fan clutch, listed for 97-98 years, $44, is a perfect fit replacement for the standard XJ fan clutch. Standard XJ fan clutch spins at 60-70 percent of shaft speed when engaged; ZJ HD fan clutch spins at 80-90 percent of shaft speed when engaged, both standard XJ and ZJ HD fan clutches spin at 30 percent of shaft speed when not engaged.

NOTE: go to any other parts store than NAPA and YOU WILL NOT GET the correct part.

Okay. Dumb basic question time, but I don't believe that I've seen an answer to this yet. Could be wrong, though.

Will this fit all years ('87-'01) of the 4.0?

I need to do mine anyway, but before I pull the trigger on it want to make sure I'm not wearing more grooves into the pavement between the house and our local auto parts suppliers. The XJ's at that point in its life where it just needs a ton of stuff, and the fewer trips I'm making to pick up or return items the better :)

How much of a drop in mpg are you seeing on the highway?
===========================================
That will very a lot. If drive a lot with light loads in cool weather there will be little need for the thing to lock up. So little or no loss. Driving with heavy loads in the heat and even at speed you will give you new fan a good work out. But don't think about it as lost MPG. Think about how much money and time you will save, NOT setting next to the road. Trying to pore new coolant into the dam old thing. (I'm pissed at my XJ right now)
Many do a unfair comparison of any additional loss in MPG with a HD over a stock clutch. Most just remove the non working fan. Install the HD and see a small loss in MPG.
Blaming the extra load of the HD fan for the loss. This is not right. You would need to replace A WORKING stock fan with a HD fan to see if any real reduction in MPG is to be.

Haven't seen one yet that it doesn't.

Your 87 uses the same radiator, same stock fan clutch as my 90, so I would say with a degree of confidence go for it--NAPA, no cross-over/same as/one size fits all alternative from another store.

If I kept records on that I'd know, I stopped checking about 30K miles ago. All I know is that the rig runs cooler and I like that. It smogged out just about perfect back in June and I can make my usual 275+ miles on a tank. No change really since the upgrade and as long as the XJ continues to purr like a kitten, at 200-210 on a long grade in the summer, I'll not change a thing.

Sorry... Not what I said... But what I meant....

Good Grief ...

A common sense approach & attitude ????? ..... congrats ;)

Its a bit like complaining that the hilift jack, 2 spare wheels and the bedroll on the roof rack cause more fuel usuage ..... :sure:

Big deal ... whats the option ???? .... spend even more money and airfreight the stuff to the campsite ... or just leave it all behind ??? :D
