Cash for clunkers

So whats the point of killing the motor? They are going to a pick and pull anyway arent they?

From memory, Volvo, G Cherokee, 2 F-150's, Explorer, Grand Marquis, Lincoln Mark8, 2Astro Vans, Full size Dodge van, and several other piles. I am going to Video Tape the Destruction! This will definitely break up the day blowing up the engines on all this crap.

Poor Grand Cherokee :(

To much BS in these threads I want facts. So the bodies minus the drive train will be dropped off at the yards? Thumb'd through and found the bold post.

The entity crushing or shredding the vehicles in this manner will be allowed to sell some parts of the vehicle prior to crushing or shredding it,

Where is the money coming from. Were mortgaging your kids future with interest.

I wonder just how this will affect the wholesale car market, small used car dealers, and salvage yards who rely on low cost cars. If a salvage yard can't sell any of the drivtrain then what can they really make money on.

Yeah, this program makes me sick. Sure, it temporarily helps the new car dealerships to sell more new cars which is a good thing, especially since the government is now invested so heavily in them. However, there will be a lot of perfectly good cars removed from circulation, and it hurts the used car dealers and local repair shops who are also hurting and need more business. Lot's of people (who are making less money than they did before) need those $3-4000 cars and trucks, and the used car dealers need to sell them.

It's using tax money (which isn't there) to artificially help one segment while it hurts a few other segments.

Our government is hopeless...........

I agree sort of. 3/4 of the vehicles are total crap not worth a hundred bucks. So I am not sure it will hurt anyone's business other that the peoples pocketbook in more taxes down the line to pay for the program.

So the customers we all had that were willing to keep their older cars an put some money into now will most likely decide not to repair vs buy a new one. Great if your in new sales but screw service. Hell you even said the Volvo was nice. Nice to see it destroyed now, great job government motors! You want to see the extreme look at Europe.

Actually I just sold a guy stock suspension so he could do just this...little depressing thinking that I helped in the demise of an XJ
Ya that was me Ian, and don't feel bad, my XJ has 'issues'. I've decided to pull the trigger on the CARS deal because of a few factors:

1. My XJ ran for a hard 200k+ miles before I had it. The PO's had done all kinds of hack jobs on it and it's starting to show. Figured that the most I would be lucky to get out of it even with all the upgrades would be $3500 tops. With this program I can get $1k over that and still make a little on the side selling all the goodies.

2. I ran the numbers and given the amount of commuting I do, whatever econobox I get will be paying for itself. BTW if I could trade it in for a 3/4 ton diesel I would in a heartbeat but the law says you cannot use the tradein for something with a higher GVWR. Even though it qualifies for $4500 for me, I refuse to get a Patriot...

3. All my Wranger buddies now run 35s and up, so my XJ on 31s is getting left behind. I just can't justify throwing a few thousand dollars in upgrades at an XJ with 220k miles and a shaky past (yes, i know -- blasphemy to some here and I mean no disrespect if that is the path you take.) I've been down that path once before and it seems like beating my head against the wall to do it again when there are other rig options.

4. I got a sweet deal on a HP44/Tera60 set of axles tricked out with 4.88s, ARBs, Moser axle shafts, CTMs etc etc, but they have TJ bracketry. They're sleeping under a tarp in my back yard waiting for the right LJ to come along for a them and a Genright Highline kit. It'll be interesting to be able to run 37s with a 2" lift.... :greensmok

5. If an 88 XJ was a rare beast I would think twice, but let's be honest; they aren't exactly showing up at Barrett's. Hopefully the karma points I've gained from refurbishing four previous XJs will counteract this one coming off the road (no pun intended):flipoff:

I must admit I'll miss my Tijuana strip club sticker though...

BTW if you read the law they CAN sell driveline parts, just not as a whole unit (i.e. not the tranny, TC annd axle together) so the pick a parts will still have plenty of spares. The only thing they cannot sell is the engine block itself...

I think it's a little stupid that people who consider themselves "Jeep" people who would probably correct others (not saying this is you personally just using you as an example) on the differences between a Cherokee (SJ or XJ) and a Grand Cherokee (ZJ, WJ, or WK) but that they continue to spread mis-information by using a non-existant body code like LJ. It's a TJ folks let's get over it!

If the actual documents say otherwise then ok but I posted a quote directly from the CARS web site. According to some other information I have read (and knowing the government) the rules are anything but simple, they are still wading through applications from dealers to participate in the program, and the final outcome will probably take a year or so to see what actually will happen.

The Volvo is very nice, but I would say at least half you would not want in your service dept, and those owners were just driving them until they quit with no intentions of repairing them.

Huh? The cars and the parts will be long gone within a year. They have to destroy the engine. The transmission is debatable and other parts are likely to be recycled. The hulk will be crushed for scrap as they always are at wrecking yards.

The bottom line is it is your vehicle and you can do with it as you wish. In most cases those who own these vehicles are likely to be unable to afford a better car without the help this program provides. There are hundreds of thousands of cherokees still out there. We will not run out of them for a long time to come. Most of us are not interested in most stock replacement parts anyway as we normally upgrade when we replace parts. Most of the parts we would want will still be available anyway as the salvage yards are still allowed to sell them. What bothers me is when they crush classic cars that are rare and have potential to be restored and preserve a little automotive history. Let's face it, nobody is going to be collecting cherokees to put in car shows 20 years from now. O.K. maybe there will be a few die hards but they're nuts :gee:

Ecology is picking up all of our "clunkers" The only part of the vehicle that is being destroyed is the engine. The Dealer must drain the oil and put in 2 quarts of Sodium Silicate and run the engine at 2000 rpms until the engine is rendered inoperative. That is it. From the vehicles that we have, half of them should not be allowed to be driven anyway, and are no way safe. Good riddance to those piles of crap. Rest assured that all the parts less engines will be resold at the wrecking yards.

Well, at least when all these people trade in their Jeeps for econoboxes they will have no reason to be on here anymore. They can move to NAEBA. I will stick with my old Jeep that can take me anywhere I want to go in any weather and won't crumble in a 5mph fender bender.
