Actually I just sold a guy stock suspension so he could do just this...little depressing thinking that I helped in the demise of an XJ
Ya that was me Ian, and don't feel bad, my XJ has 'issues'. I've decided to pull the trigger on the CARS deal because of a few factors:
1. My XJ ran for a hard 200k+ miles before I had it. The PO's had done all kinds of hack jobs on it and it's starting to show. Figured that the most I would be lucky to get out of it even with all the upgrades would be $3500 tops. With this program I can get $1k over that and still make a little on the side selling all the goodies.
2. I ran the numbers and given the amount of commuting I do, whatever econobox I get will be paying for itself. BTW if I could trade it in for a 3/4 ton diesel I would in a heartbeat but the law says you cannot use the tradein for something with a higher GVWR. Even though it qualifies for $4500 for me, I refuse to get a Patriot...
3. All my Wranger buddies now run 35s and up, so my XJ on 31s is getting left behind. I just can't justify throwing a few thousand dollars in upgrades at an XJ with 220k miles and a shaky past (yes, i know -- blasphemy to some here and I mean no disrespect if that is the path you take.) I've been down that path once before and it seems like beating my head against the wall to do it again when there are other rig options.
4. I got a sweet deal on a HP44/Tera60 set of axles tricked out with 4.88s, ARBs, Moser axle shafts, CTMs etc etc, but they have TJ bracketry. They're sleeping under a tarp in my back yard waiting for the right LJ to come along for a them and a Genright Highline kit. It'll be interesting to be able to run 37s with a 2" lift.... :greensmok
5. If an 88 XJ was a rare beast I would think twice, but let's be honest; they aren't exactly showing up at Barrett's. Hopefully the karma points I've gained from refurbishing four previous XJs will counteract this one coming off the road (no pun intended):flipoff:
I must admit I'll miss my Tijuana strip club sticker though...
BTW if you read the law they CAN sell driveline parts, just not as a whole unit (i.e. not the tranny, TC annd axle together) so the pick a parts will still have plenty of spares. The only thing they cannot sell is the engine block itself...
