Hey guys, I posted this thread up earlier today under the OEM tech section. http://naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?p=245247721#post245247721

I don't know if there is a trick to the caliper slide bolts or if I just did something wrong or if the Autozone brake pads are too thick or what? But I need help tonight. I am at work now, but I will be home around 6-6:30PM. I will pay for your gas, dinner, and maybe even a little extra if I can get someone to fix my problem tonight. I NEED this XJ to work so I can drive it to work tomorrow morning. It has been un-drivable since last Wednesday and I have ran out of favors with borrowing friends' cars. Please someone help me. I am at my wit's end. Thanks!

Thank you for the offer soopergoober, but unfortunately, I am stuck at work until 5pm and I don't get home until about 6pm.

a buddy recently ran into the problem of brake pads that were just too thick, they would NOT go on...

turns out the trouble was putting a 4wd brake pad, into a 2wd caliper? the same pads fit on my 1990 4wd, but didnt fit his 92 2wd converted to 4x4 (but re-using the old calipers)
good luck man, i know how you feel. im on the wrong side of LA though

if you are still stuck tomorrow call me, my number is in the first page of the so cal recovery thread stickied at the top of the socal section. I'll come help you get it worked out, i need to head out that way anyway to pick something up from tony in corona, i can do that on my way home from helping you. all i ask is cover my gas, but my saturn gets good mpg's so its not going to be a 60$ jeep tank of gas lol. unfortunately i'm only available during the day.

btw just to verify, you are using a c clamp (or the proper piston pushing tool) against an old pad to push the piston back into the caliper, correct? if you don't push the pad back in it will never fit back onto the rotor :)

Thanks for the offers guys, but I got it handled last night finally! The caliper pins were pushing too hard against the backing of the inner brake pads, casuing the assembly to lock up. My brake set up is weird, I have calipers and pads for an 89 but rotors and hubs for a 90+. The master cylinder and brake hoses are for an 89 model as well.

I have a temporary fix by using crush washers in between the caliper and where it bolts up to the knuckle and I plan on cutting off the tip of the pins passed just where there is no thread so that I can still keep everything tight and not have the caliper pins make contact with the back of the pad.

Does that sound like a good plan or should I do things differently? Any advice is appreciated.

James, I'll call you when I get home from work around 6 just to make sure I am going about everything correctly.

You need the 2wd caliper bolts, the sliders are different. the way you have it right now is NOT safe. I looked all the crap up today, ted sent me the pic you texted him.

you have 90-92 2wd calipers and hoses on there. you need the pads and rotors that match. they use a completely different type of caliper bolt. call me or text me later tonight and i'll look up the part numbers for the bolts you need if you want me to. I'll be home after 8.

FIX IT THE RIGHT WAY, brakes are not something to cobble together. I'm not being a jerk here, i'm 100% serious. mismatched brake parts that don't fit together correctly are extremely dangerous to you and others on the road with you.

whenever talking about the 2wd front end, you should allways mention if it has the spindle setup with regular bearings, or the unit bearing with a dummy shaft setup. im not sure what year got what when it comes to this, but it sure can throw a wrench into any gears.

more info allways helps.

Thanks for your concern guys. I just got off of the phone with Grimm and everything seems to be in order.

close enough, for now ;)

I would still recommend delving further into what you actually have going on there but as long as you have the right pads, rotors, and bolts to go with your calipers it really doesnt matter, the knuckles are all the same (unless you have the spindles as XCM mentioned, but I would hope that difference would be obvious :D) I'm still curious to see what all you've got in there.
