Thanks man, I'm going to come out to the Jeep Rally you mentioned in Ellington. I don't have 4 wheel drive still, but I'll come out and meet some people in the CT area. :D

GAJAR was a great time, I went with my uncle and took my oldest son as well. I;m hoping next year that I'll be going in my jeep, problem is I was offered a built 44/9 combo for a price i couldn't say no to, went for them and the front wasn't in great shape(now almost finished) and the rear I'm swapping the spool out for a grizzly.
 
I'm at a cross roads on my rig, I've saved some money to gear the jeep so I'll have 4x4 again, before the snow flies and maybe actually take the jeep out again. But, I have a decision to make.

1. Buy front and rear master install sets for the 30 and 8.25 to an ideal gear ratio for my 32s (4:56 or 4:88) and due to lack of funds, install myself. This will be my first time doing gears but I've always wanted to learn. One downside is I'll need to buy a couple tools to do the job (bearing puller, in/lb torque wrench, and Dial indicator)

2. Buy a matching gear set for the 8.25 only (4:10) just to get the 4x4 back before the snow falls here in the east coast, and have enough money to have someone install it. Downside is, eventually, I will have to regear, even if that is several years from now.


So insight would be nice :rattle:
 
OK, Updates

over the last couple months I've been saving and planning on how exactly I was going to finish the "D30 Project". After reading, asking for advice and revising my budget, I was convinced to swap out the rear C 8.25 for the beefier Ford 8.8. Rather than going with my original plan or just regearing the C 8.25

I found a JY here in Connecticut, that had a '97 8.8 out of an explorer, with 4:10s that will match the front. I got the axle for an OK price, 200$ and a 50$ core

The 8.8 is one heavy damn axle. Its in decent shape other than the rust. I bought new rotors and pads from Napa, and I'm debating wether or not to buy new Calipers, Ill have to see where my budget is.

I started cutting brackets and cleaning the rust off, I pulled the cover and verified that it is indeed 4:10s, unfortunately, i didn't get lucky and have one with a posi. Oh well.


 
I welded the center section, to ensure I don't have issues down the road. Im all ready to put it in, just waiting on parts to come in, then out with the old and in with the new.





Ill have to figure out what to do with the E brake, most likely just loop the cable and clamp it.

later on down the road, ill truss it, and put a ruff stuff cover on it.

I had my 8.8 fully installed before I realized that the e brake shoes had turned to dust. I ended up with new rotors, calipers, pads and shoes on there at the last minute just so it'd move. I'd suggest at least pulling the rotors off to inspect the notoriously finicky e brake assembly before you install it.
 
Yeah I have new rotors and pads, and depending on the condition of the calipers, I'll just reuse them.

The E brake set up looks good, I cleaned up all the springs and made sure they still function.

Got my install kit, so I'll be tackling this here soon. Still looking for a 1310 flange though....
 
If there is a 6 States near you, they know what flange it is... It's a factory Spicer part. If you are scavenging for it, look for a Ford Ranger that has a 3.0 V-6, that flange yoke isn't used in any other application that I'm aware of. That's what the driveline guy at my local 6 States guy told me... I may have the part number at home, I'll check this evening for you...

Thank you! I was literally just looking around for which ranger to pull it out of. I just got back from the JY with the flange. 10$ :thumbup:
 
What's the reasoning behind not adding the truss before you install the diff?

Just funds, I really wanted to add some armor and truss, but I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel just putting the axle in.

It's something that I can add on later, when funds free up after Christmas and baby and what not haha.


I got quite a bit done tonight thanks to help from my brother.

Got the C8.25 out, took some wrestling due to stubborn drums being seized on, but nevertheless we got it out.

Put the new brakes on, and bent up the brake lines. I wish I would have brought the tubing bender ho me from work to make it look better, oh well.

Got the axle bolted to the leafs, and wouldn't you know it, we got it dead centered on the first try. I know, I was impressed too.
I tried routing the brake lines in places they would catch rocks, but the way the brake hoses are, this was the best I could do.
Now I just need to tack the mounts in, drop the axle and weld everything.

I'm going to weld a bolt to the axle for the brake line to mount to. Should hold it up a little higher.

So tomorrow I need to grab a couple small things and we should be golden :D

Got the axle in the jeep for the last time. I had pulled it out and finished welding the perches and the shock mounts. (I know my shocks are ugly, and need to be replaced) I welded a bold to the axle to hold the brake lines, and put a new u joint in my driveline. For those that are wondering if you get a flange out of a 97 ford ranger (apparently the 3.0 v6) the u joint matches the jeep factory U joint and requires no special modification. :thumbup:

Once the axle was in the jeep, I hooked up the brakes and bled them. Then I tried hooking up the E brake, unfortunately the adjusting screw for the E brake was seized solid, so I'll have to look for a new part. Oh well, I rarely use the E brake.

I drove the jeep around and I like the added torque, just a little pick up and go and she still drives well on the freeway. The gears do have a little hum, but it's nothing I can't live with. I will say, the braking is awesome, and really compliment the WJ brakes in the front. I can stop her on a dime :D

I need to button up a couple small things before I can say it's "done" but it's drivable and ready for the snow!
 
Trip report.

After being out in the east coast for 8 months, I finally got out and did some wheeling.

While even though my rig I definetly a west coast rig, and I currently don't have any kind of traction adding devices, my jeep did pretty good.

The suspension worked amazingly. This was the first time the jeep had been out since the WJ steering, and I'm amazed at how well it worked. Even the 32/33ish" tires, steering was solid, and the tires didn't rub front or back.

I'm happy. But now, As a "New Years res" I'm planing on Lockers, some quarter panel Armor, and possibly some kind of rear bumper.

Also, the wife and I are planning on driving the jeep back to Utah next summer with the new baby. We need a vehicle when we visit, and it would be nice to fly home and go to moab or what not. ;) so, big plans for 2015!
 
I'm glad it hit where it did though, a couple inches to the right and I would be replacing a window.

I posted in the painting thread, but didn't get anything. I want to keep it from rusting, but not sure on the best way to fix it.
