Checking backlash on newly acquired xj

Bigclunker98

NAXJA Forum User
hey, I’m new to Naxja. This is my 4th jeep
Well I just accidentally bought a pair of xjs.

The 99 is highly modified and it wasn’t even forsale. It’s got
A ton goodies under it. But the guy installed the iron rock trusses on Dana 30/ford 8.8 with discs and didn’t paint the housings a couple years back.

4.88 gears arb air locker in rear (need to run lines still)
Front a limited slip I was told

Im doing my initial tune up today.
Oil change, dif fluids, transmission, tcase, and coolant.

While I’m in there should I drop dif cases and inspect backlash? This rig has been built well, and not wheeled hard. Yet
Only thing I have in my to do list is sand blast and paint these housings.

How do I post pics?
Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,

Welcome to the forum.

Posting pics requires hosting pics. If you become a paying member (red letter) then NAXJA will host the pics, all you have to do is download them in the post you are making. Alternatively, for those who are not red letter members, you will need to download the pics to a hosting site (photobucket used to be the popular choice, until they decided to break the internet) and link them to your post.

We can post pics and be members on other forumns not a ton of reason to be here since words are mostly useless.

That said if i grabbed pinion and did not feel any back lash id then feel the need to see what or if it actually had any.

For free image hosting use imgbox

"500x500 or 800x800 pixel (resized)" for the photo size works pretty well for BB (bulletin board) forums.

After uploading the photo, copy and paste the BB-code directly into your text

Since the covers are off I would check backlash. And if the gears are fairly new and installed by a backyard mechanic I would also run a pattern check while I'm at it.

The most important question would be - what could you do about it if the pinion/ring gear are out of spec ???

1. Depending on how bad, attempt to readjust?
2. Start saving up for a new gear set? :)

I meant what could the OP personally handle as far as knowledge and tools!

Even though there are ways to share photo's its pretty silly. Im glad to see others also dont pay who are big contributors to the life of this dieing forumn, that is also being killed by its owners.
