BEST OIL?!

We have seen lifters stop rotating when using a full synthetic oil, not sure which brand.
Just a note on the Joe Gibbs XP series racing oil in our maximum effort SB Fords. We have seen a gain of 3 to 4 HP just by switching to the Gibbs.

Its true that synthetic can be too slippery for non-broken in valvetrains and higher millage engines that have not been bed-in very well. But, any roller valvetrain will be better off with synthetic oil. As all 4.0's are flat tappet, synthetics advantages don't really out weigh its potential for resulting problems. I run a 406 chevy with 630ish horsepower, 12.5:1 compression (ross pistons :) ) and .670/.680 lift on solid lifter cam in my 63 Tempest, I ONLY run Amsoil SAE 60 racing oil with high ZDDP content (I don't think its API certified becuase of this!!) and its one the more popular oils I see people race with. But, most, if not all race engines are mechanical lifters with high spring pressure and need the most ZDDP they can get so for steet use, I stick to Valvoline, Mobile 1, Amsoil, Royal Purple, and thats pretty much it. The better filters are Purolator Pure One, Fram Tough Gaurd, BALDWIN (Very expensive, 20ish$ for a oil filter, but maybe the best I've ever seen) and NAPA, like someone already said.

Rotella-T syn is a dino based oil!! So is most of mobil -1, penzoil plat, catrol, quaker etc....

The only oil you could say is bad(slippery) which is true is a polyester like redline! Even then it'd be hard to say because they have unregulated amounts of zinc ph boron and moly!

Cut open a fram tough guard then a mobil 1.......

Clearly this 2001 XJ is running strong on slippery oils!!! (Even though coolant is leaking in!!! Look at Sodium and Potassium....0331 likely. The rotella stands up to it! this guy needs to adress is 01!!!) Look at the add packs on the Rotella syn... I mean come on.... its packed up, cheap and awesome wear protection, even after 6k Mobil held fine too after 12k (delvac 1 SL CI-4) more expensive.!!

RyanM, whats SUS and FP?

Looks like Amsoil is kind of a distant 2nd...but still good protection - lowest Iron #s...

sus is viscosity at 210. 64-75 is spec for a 40 weight.... delvac and the amsoil thickened up. The german castrol is a 30w and in spec.

FlashPoint should be above 370 but could be a mess up at the lab or the coolant seeping in throwing off test. , looks like he used a different lab...maybe

I won't explain it. this will help http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_point

These hogs are known to spit 50ppm iron ever OCI with no probs! My Fe was 8 or 9ppm :) Along with 8ppm Si with a 'k&n cone' ;)

Yeah, the K&N cone is what i have...and i'm debating on switching to an Amsoil cone....or hell, maybe just a cannister style filter like my dad's log truck has. Big Cat diesel engines :)

Whatcha think? I read thru Bob The Oil Guy's filter analysis, but didnt really get much out of it other than he likes paper drop in filters...the amsoil filter he used was foam, but I think their EaAU are either paper or cotton gauze, but apparently protect better than K&N and I dont think they require oiling....? I cant find many details on their page...

I want to get a snorkel, but I'm not sure what kind of cannister filter to get with that. Til then though, I think I'll get an Amsoil....?

So yes on the Amsoil EaAU....i hate to get rid of my pretty K&N Tube and go back to a stock airbox...

You know much about cannister filters?

The EaAU filters are a nano-fiber media. I just got one for my wife's bus.
No oiling is required. Cleaning is just low pressure air, or vacuum them clean. It looks almost like a stock filter with a blue filter media. And a nice 'Made in the USA' stamped right on it......

The High content of paraffin in Penzoil was present in the old days due to there high use of Pennsylvania crude. paraffins only negative effect was slugging in low temp engines.

I use Mobil 1 10-w30 full synthetic extended performance. It is more expensive than regular full synthetic but it is said to last a year to 12000 miles. I have put about 5000 miles on with it and the oil still looks great. I also used the mobil one extended performance oil filter. I did notice a very slight increase in oil pressure while at idle.

if most 4.0 engines last well past 200k miles and dont continually rev past 5k, does it really need the best oil?

all this talk about the best oils is interesting, but does it really matter what oil gets put into the 4.0?

Yes! Mobil-1 EP is weak based on a virgin sample. about 700ppm zinch and phospurus each. This is definitely a Extended Roller Cam , new engine style oil.

BlueWeasel, gravity is only a theory, it's not a law.

I'd like to see you levitate though.
