the stroker is expensive, what other things can i do during the rebuild that will still be cost effective. its a 90 4.0 with about 150k, its gonna be out so im gonna rebuild. i am using it for my dd, but i do have plans on using for a trail rig so im looking for low end of course. anyone do a build up and kinda know how much was spent on machine work and parts?

Check wreckers or online parts places for the crank and other components. And the link to Rob Bryce's is not a kit. Its a homebrew using off the shelf parts for cheap. I didn't say 'go do this' I questioned the logic as to whether its really expensive. I only recommended you price it out in comparison to just having your engine rebuilt to stock with a few performance mods...

A good rebuild means new pistons, cam, and lifters anyway. Other than the crank and rods, which run about $100 around here, you simply substitute different pistons, cam and lifters. Yes the cam is a bit more expensive, but not all that much. You bore the block for the new pistons, so that is the same. I spent about an extra $100 to have the block decked, to make it run better on lower octane fuel. Everything else you can run stock. I went with the FOMOCO injectors and ended up having too much fuel flow and had to use a Map adjuster to scale them back.

I say all of this to point out, that you can build a stroker for within $200-300 of what a straight overhaul would cost. Wait on the headers and all the other stuff until you have some money burning a hole in your pocket.

total price for PARTS for my stroker, came out, with machining, to around $1100. That's rebuild kit, moly coated cast pistons, rods and crank. I did have the rotating assembly balanced too, and some other odds and ends, but the stroker kit was only a couple of hundred more than the basic 4.0L kit! it's worth it too!
