Acetone will increase gas mileage?!?!?

Re: Acetone will increase MPG?!?!

I looked into Acetone down in Oz yesterday and you guys have it good. The best I could get was buying it at the hardware store in 4 litre tins for $29 AUD. That works out to be about a gallon for $22.50 USD. Hell of a lot more than your sub $9 but if I get the same 3-5 mpg increase it would still pay.
Looking on with great interest :)

Re: Acetone will increase MPG?!?!

After reading all the scientific mumbo-jumbo that's been floating around...all I can say is this: my mileage increased by about 3 mpg. I don't know if the tides changed, or the recent earthquake near India made the oil richer, or quite simply it's the acetone, but I, for one, don't care. I got better gas mileage, and that's all that matters! :) For the question about engine temp...my 92 Cherokee has always run about 210 or lower(no hood vents, etc....must just be luck). Since adding Acetone to the fuel mix, I haven't noticed any difference in temp, whether it be freeway speed or trail speed.

Re: Acetone will increase MPG?!?!

Old_man stated way back in the beginning of the thread that increased MPG may be due to the cleaning effects of acetone.
It would be interesting if somebody who has been using it for a few tankfulls would switch back to using only gas, no acetone and then measure MPG. If the mileage stays the same as with acetone added, I would say your motor got a cleaning.

The acetone also helps the vaporization of the fuel mixture.

Re: Acetone will increase MPG?!?!

Alright.. here goes.. I STILL think you guys are all a little tapped in the head.

However, I am not above trying it and seeing what I get. My commute every day is identical. 5 minutes to the highway, 15 minutes on the highway, 10 minutes on a side road and another 10 minutes on another highway. The speeds are almost always identical, and I keep the highway travel less than 75. Mainly because the speed limit is 65 and I have enough points on my license already.

I go to the same gas station every time (membership place, it's always cheaper!) and I just happen to go to the same pump. Mostly concidence.

For the last 2 months of this job I average a regular 21.5 - 22.1. Occasionally less if a tank goes over the weekend (errands and the like) bit never more than 22 and change. For the previous year and a half the commute was .5 mile side road, 60 miles highway, .5 mile side road and I got a steady 22 and change gas mileage. So.. my results are well documented and as steady as you can get. I can tell my gas mileage just by looking at the guage at this point. If I hit half tank between 200 and 210 it's a 22mpg tank. ;) Yeah, I'm a little weird.

SO.. I'll swing by the hardware store and acquire some Acetone and report my results in a couple days. Maybe by the end of the week. But for the record, I still think you are all nuts.

Marcus, try your local paint stores/warehouses. They will usually have it for cheaper.

Re: Acetone will increase MPG?!?!

I got a good gas solution a couple weeks ago...an 88 Honda CRX! If you can put up with having your butt dragging on the ground and dumb kids trying to race you all day long it gets 33 mpg around town! With prices in California the way the are now the XJ will sit in the driveway for a while unless it's wheeling.

You have a 22 mpg Jeep???????????????
I'm not even close to that......

Re: Acetone will increase MPG?!?!

I am going to try this. However, I am going to try it on my wife’s Cherokee – without telling her. That way she won’t be looking for a mileage increase and the results will not be tainted.

I suspect that if you are “looking” for a mileage increase, that your driving habits might slightly change. So I’m not going to tell my wife anything.

She’s has a lead-foot, so this will be interesting.

That sounds like a good test especially on a person that is a lead foot all the time. :)

I have a mpg readout on my overhead counsel of my 98' ZJ 4.0L and have done 25 miles today after putting in the acetone last night so it's to early for me to comment, but I have only been getting 15.2 mpg or so with mostly street/highway driving in rush hour traffic without the acetone. I'm really hoping for 18 mpg or so based on what I'm reading.

well, that IS my plan.. ;)

Re: Acetone will increase MPG?!?!

Well I got my emmisions test on my XJ and WOW it did GREAT, I am NOT saying that the acetone did it but I can say for SURE it didn't Hurt

Loaded HC in PPM 13 allowed 220
Idle HC in PPM 30 allowed 220

CO loaded .06 allowed 1.20
CO Idle .01 allowed 1.20

Re: Acetone will increase MPG?!?!

OMG!!!!
I got a 17' Uhaul truck for my move tomorrow. I asked the Uhaul counter jocky what the gas milage was for that 17' brick, He laughed and said about 12 mpg.... maybe. I added 9 oz of acetone to the 40 gal tank ( ouch ) and filled it up in Sacramento right to the top, I drove it to Woodland and topped it off again. It only took 1.2 gallons to go 22.3 miles :D. I'm making 2- 152 mile trips in it tomorrow, so I'll post up on Sat. for the final results.

mmm.. 5 speed. ;) It took me a while to find a 5 speed 4.0. But I did and it's been worth my while!

Has anybody noticed a difference in the engine temp when doing this?

in mine it's about 10~20 degrees drop at the coolant gauge... but this is TOTALLY gut feal as i never bothered to baseline it...

Re: Acetone will increase MPG?!?!

I took a look at the rubber hose samples this morning... the jar of gas is slightly cloudy the jar of acetone has very fine black particles at the bottom. The slice of fill hose in the gas jar mics out slightly larger than the dry control... no change in the acetone fill hose... no change in either fuel line... at the end of one week submersion all samples will be air dried for one week and remic'ed.

all the subject material is used of unknown manufacture and age (but were attached to the jeep with stock fittings) allowing those variables, in my opinion, does not harm the validity of this test as it is anecdotally illustrate the harmful effects of acetone in a trivial concentration added to brand-x 87 octane gas.:lecture:

Ran a tank through my daily driver this weekend. 1996 Ranger 4cyl, automatic, 218K miles. I noticed that when cold, the engine ran pretty rough at first...maybe due to the acetone breaking gunk loose in the fuel system? But now that I've ran that tank out and am on my next tank, it's noticeable smoother.

The mileage, on the other hand, is not so hot. I actually droped 2mpg...but that's only one tank. I am trying this with a 10% alcohol blend for a few tanks, and then I'll switch to no alcohol to make a few trials. Hopefully, I'll see the same benefit many of you guys have....because it really sucks getting 18mpg in a stinking 4 cylinder (and yes, it has been tuned up, etc.).

Couple more tanks gone (I commute 130 miles round trip...so I burn a lot of fuel), and I'm averaging 20.5 mpg. This is at the very high end of what I've ever obtained with this truck. So I can't really say I've gained anything yet, but it's pretty darn close. I filled up with regular 87 octane (different gas staition, but one that I've montiored mileage from in the past) this morning with NO alcohol in it...hoping that will make a more significant difference, but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Acetone will increase MPG?!?!

myjeepsbigger, try dropping your concentration of acetone... plus iirc alcohol is added to gas as a preservative... I read that as detering break down and raising flash point (bad for mileage, unless your CR is so high that you need it...)
