XJ replacement...what would you choose.

Seriously, I can buy 2 WJs for the price of 1 TJ. Or 3 WJs and a trail beater XJ for what a 4-door JK Rubicon goes for. I'll keep awn enjoying my dub while you guys keep on making car payments. :)

Just wait till the electrical gremblins catch up to you. Or the transmission fails.

I like the WJ's and totally understand the creature comfort side of things but I don't trust them. I've known too many of them to have miserable electrical problems and the trannies have always been on the weak side.

So true, and the blend door issues, viscous coupling issues, on and on. Everyone I know that has one of the WJ's has had a multitude of issues. I hope you do not have the D-44a, its another problem all in itself. I know there is no such thing as a trouble free vehicle but some are more trouble than others.

I still say rebuild a XJ while you can still get parts.

well I bought this XJ a year ago with 65,000 miles on it. A month later the transmission went out. I think thats just soured me on this jeep...its got 85,000 on it now.

Now the AC Evap is leaking plus a few other small problems that come with an older vehicle.

Part of me wants to drop a couple grand in it put on an OME 2.5 inch lift kit and fix the small problems and drive it for the next 5 years.

Another part of me wants a nice new car with a warranty and no rust.

I'm probably going to end up keeping it and fixing it up for now. At least tell we see if the economy is gonna turn around and I'm not next in line on the chopping block. So I guess I'm shopping lift kits, brake line replacement, and AC parts this week.

 it and :smoker: it, :roflmao:.

if i HAD to replace our XJ with what we wanted..... it would be the dodge durango. if we couldn't get another xj (or a nice old waggy). it has a lot more interior room, (according to my brother) is very capable off-road, and i believe (think i heard it somewhere, but not sure of this one) they came with your choice of a v-6 or a v-8, or a  HEMI!!!!

I love my Hemi Commander, or did I already say that:cheers:

Nearly 400hp, 7400 pound towing capacity, full time 4wd with front/rear LS and cruise down the highway sipping gas at 21mpg.

ain't that just a spiffy thing to have in there xjtrailrider?
not sur eif i like the looks of the comanders or not... it looks like an XJ, only NOT.:wierd:

Well to be honest, I hated the looks of them when they first came out but they grew on me. One of my wheelin buddies bought his wife a V-6 model and I drove his and fell in love with it. It drives like a XJ, the hood looks like a XJ's when you look over it. Its like a really good job of crossing a Grand Waggy and a XJ.

I'm not a fan of IFS and all the parts that will wear out with it but its hard to beat the high speed ride/handle of front IFS. The rear axle is a full floater and mine is geared 3.92, 4 wheel discs, trailer sway control, ESP, back up cam, nav system, 3 sunroofs, its got a lot of goodies!

I'll never give up my XJ's to wheel a Commander but for a street 4wd, family travel machine, and occasional tow rig, it works out nicely.

just sounds like a lot more electrical CRAP to mess up on ya to me. but knowin exactly what your gettin in the miles per gallon area is kewl.

Let's not forget how the 4.7 V8 Is a miserable piece of crap that likes to self-destruct in typical Chrysler fashion. (Timing chains, heads, connecting rods)

Lets see.... (and in no particular order)
New stuff I'd like to replace XJ:
Jeep Commander
Jeep JK
um... um... Land Rover still makes the Defender 90, but you'd have to have one specially imported. It's still what LR used to be before it became a rich persons mall crawler like the current USA models.

90s/early 2k stuff I'd go for...
Land Rover Defender 90
Nissan Pathfinder
Blazer ZR2
S10 ZR2
Nissan Xterra (Is that the one with the funny buldge in the tailgate? Yes I include this on my list even if its fugly)

Pre-1990 stuff:
Jeep Commando
K5-Jimmy/Blazer
IH Scout
Ford Bronco
Dodge Ramcharger
Land Rover Defender 90
Jeep CJ-8
Jeep Cherokee Chief
Jeep Wagoneer
Jeep M-715
Jeep CJ-7
"Deuce and a Half"

think you're right about the nissan xterra with the bulge in the tailgate.

as for the pre-1990's stuff i'd only shorten it by a few...
ford bronco (it's a ford for cryin out loud!!!)lol
land rover defender 90 (depending the year, nothing newer than 1985) after that is when they started to be yuppie-mobiles.

for the 90's early 2k i'd add the durango. it's the replacement for the ramcharger, with 4-doors!

the 2010 toyota 4runners are pretty nice, but they are waaaay overpriced. The 4-cyl stripped down model starts at over $27k, you can have 4wd at $31k and if you want the offroad pack, you're paying $36k. I don't know if they're gonna sell many around those prices.

I paid way less than that for my loaded out Hemi Commander. Yota's are overpriced and over-rated, and i can say that honestly since I'm a former Toyota tech. Its why i drive Jeeps, still have to work on them like the Toys but at least its a lot cheaper.

Not certain the Defender ever became a yuppie mobile...it was pretty much always a tough, well-built off-road vehicle.
