XJ replacement...what would you choose.

Yeah, the Wranglers & CJ's have frames made of gold... so it seems. We wanted a Wrangler or CJ, but no way in hell we were gonna pay what the people around here think they are worth.

Great pics Alex. I bet it was tough to adjust to the comforts of the new rig. :-)
 
My wife is going to down size back to a car soon and I'm going to take her WK as my DD. Overland with Hemi and all the gadgets you could want. Its also a comfortable ride and the MPGs aren't to bad if you keep it below 80.

That's why I figured on looking for a small used turbo 4 cylinder wagon as a DD (plus I fit surprisingly well in a PT Cruiser for being as big as I am and still kinda dig the look of the car:wierd: ).
 
Well, as much as I hate VAG, I would probably be swayed by a TDI wagon. Turbo, diesel, wagon... Maintenance nightmare, but you can't have it all. Of course VW TDI's are also made out of gold, apparently.
 
I hate hate hate the new 4 door Wranglers. In fact, as much as I love the wrangler I can't stand to drive them full time. I spend to much time on the highway and my hearing is already screwed up enough.

I like the WJ overland idea!

If you drive the highway a lot then you don't want the "Gutless" 3.8 V-6 anyway. Our 08 JK 2 door Sahara with 3.73 gearing and stock tires will only run out to about 80mph and will not maintain 70mph hear in the mountains on the highway(I-81 for instance) without dropping it out of OD. If you leave it in OD and let the tranny hunt, it will rev out to 5k when downshifting, an abrupt shift at that. The OD switch is hard as heck to reach as it is in the center console in front of the shifter, its a real PITA.

And to beat all, ALL 5 of my XJ's (including the trail rig on 35's) and the Hemi XK get better mileage on the highway. In town mileage on the JK is good, around 16mpg. They really need to come up with a smallish V-8 for the JK that has MDS/VVT like the XK Hemi has.

The Hemi is has too much power for the JK drive train, it would rip it in pieces if dropped in with no other mods.

V8 power lets me pass motorhomes 3 at a time at 7000 feet elevation and it gets better gas mileage than my Cherokee did.

I do have to deal with the luxe leather/suede/wood interior, heated seats, his-n-hers climate control & power moonroof but I have adjusted to it. :)

Best of all, my wife and I can both sleep comfortably in the back, weather be damned.

This will be for "off-road touring". My days of doing Dusy-Ershim, Pritchett and Mt. Blanca are over. I've had it a month and done a 9 day trip with it already, no regrets at all. :) Best of all, it is still a Jeep!
