XJ D-44 axle flange welding Q's?

I've done quite a bit of searching on the subject of doing a disc brake conversion on my newly found XJ D44 out of a 87.

What I'd like to do is use ZJ brake parts a TJ retaining plate and weld up and redrill the new bolting pattern into the axle flange. I dont really like the egg out the old stud hole method... but ill do it if welding the flange is undesireable.

Does anyone know what kind of steel the flange is made of and if there will be any adverse effects after welding it over?

Also I know I've seen a link to a list of the part numbers but cant seem to remember where I saw it. Anyone...

Alright so this is my revised shopping list

'95 to '98 Grand Cherokee's (ZJ) Dana 35 disc brakes, flex lines and proportioning valve
2003 TJ Rubicon retaining plate

Anyone got an answer as to weld or not?
I'd like to redrill and replace the old studs with new ones (i think the rubys would work)

yeah ive read those and a bunch of related posts but im mostly concerned with welding over the old stud holes on the axle housing to redrill and press in new tj studs

Well, I gave up(have all the parts),but didnt like the amount and location of the metal to be removed.Mine was a MJ D44 and there was no room towards the outer bearing shell area.I ended up with the Larger 44 drums,they work awsome with my 33's.

You need to drill 2 new holes and open up the other two. I have done a couple with no problems - I wouldn't weld the flange - If I wanted to fill the hole I'd use some of that 2 Part epoxy to fill the hole, then drill it.
