My 8.8 is on its way out from a hard life prior to my ownership. Looking to see if anybody has one available. There's 6 dozen exploders in the yard right now I can pull one from, but would rather see the coin go to a fellow member.

Need 4.10 gearing and disc brakes. Already set up to go under an XJ is a major plus. LSD or not doesn't matter.
 
You really want an open diff.
 
This may be off topic, but I've been looking into 8.8s. Why would one want an open diff vs an LSD?

Because the LSD sucks and you can't add a lunchbox locker to it in the future. It would require the replacement of the entire carrier to add a locker. Which would lead to a fresh gear setup.

If you have intentions of installing a full case locker or no intentions of adding a locker at all then it wouldn't matter either way.
 
The lsd doesnt suck.... It can be built into a pretty decent unit using ford racing parts. In stock form though thy are pretty used up

Well, I guess I meant it sucks in stock worn out form. I've never attempted to spice one up.

My 8.8 had an LSD in it at one point. It was basically open.
 
I have never been impressed with an LSD offroad. I'd rather have an open carrier with a lunchbox locker, but if the LSD was the only thing I could find I wouldn't not run it.
 
Lowrange2 hit the nail on the head. There is only one lunchbox locker available for a LS 8.8 and it is 2/3 of the price of a full case locker. If you have an open diff, you can get lunchbox lockers that are a lot cheaper and all DIY for installation.

I have the LS version and have read the articles about people rebuilding them with Ford Racing kits to stiffen them up. Results are varied.....a few got great service wheeling but most said after 3 trips it was shot and about as good as an open diff.

The Ford Racing kits are cheap and if someone know how to build one stout, I have a LS for you to work your magic on.
 
The PowerTrax was the only one I found and it was just north of $400 vs less than $300 for a open diff Aussie.
 
I guess in the end, I would really prefer one that's open so I can eventually do whatever I want to with it.

Wouldn't be opposed to a LSD if the price is right and it's not clapped out.
