why do some ppl beat their rigs so much?

it is a general term used and it seemed as though my jeep was being referred to as a mall crawler b/c i like to repair damage and spend my time fixing it. no need for the sarcasm.

most of the replies on the thread had sarcasm towards me and how stupid i must have been for asking the question in the first place. maybe i am reading in to it too much but when i re read the posts almost all of them have that type attitude towards me making me feel like the biggest idiot in the world for asking a simple question and expecting a decent answer not sarcasm. reread the posts and you'll see.

I would think that after 240 some odd posts and being a user here since 02 that you would know this place drips with sarcasm.....Don't take offence to it.

i think you are reading it the way you want to hear it....which seems to be the reason you had for starting this thread. i don;t read it that way.

Unless I missed it what wasn't mentioned is the terrain difference. You show as being from NH which doesn't have anything close to the terrain that we have out west. This means that often we don't have a choice and that's why we don't care too much. Of course I wouldn't mind if my rig had more straight panels then it does, but oh well :D As long as the cold air doesn't leak out of the cabin in the summer and water doesn't enter it in the winter, it's all good.

all i did was ask a question. i am not reading things the way i want to read them b/c if you go back and reread the posts thats how they are interpreted. i am not taking offense to any posts or replies i am just trying to understand why there is so much sarcasm towrds me for the question i asked. all soemone had to say was, " well i dont mind the dents b/c i dont drive my jeep every day its only a trail rig." or i just dont care aobut the dents." not well if your not getting dents your not wheeling hard enough or your babying it all teh time so you must not be having fun.

thant what pisses me off.

yella jeep has been the only person to reply with a useful post that actually give a good answer to my question.

I think you are wrong. People are just plain and simple giving you their reason for not doing it the way you are. I have not read a single post where someone has told you that you are stupid for fixing your jeep if you put a dent in it.

I know I haven't. I wheel with a guy just like that...He has one of the nicest jeeps I have seen anywhere and he would go to great lengths not to put a dent in it but if he did he wouldn't waste any time getting it fixed.

Here is a couple of pics...you can see there are no dents and he wheels most of the trails with the rest of us.

Locally we rib him about it and he takes the ribbing but in truth there isn't one of us who doesn't respect his decisions in how he treats his jeep.

The same holds true for you...No one here has disrespected anything you have said..They have just told you they have a difference of opinion....Thats all.

well unfortunatly there are not too many trails around here where its leagal to go wheeling. so its trees and not rocks which sucks.

well then i think we are finally on the same page b/c that is exactly what i am talking about.

in the beginning posts before this broek out the impression got from many people was that i am wasting my time to fix damage. i am just tring to keep teh original look alive by taking care of the body.

i've wheeled a lot in rocks, and a lot in trees........i always seem to get more body damage from the damn trees on the tight trails

My jeep currently has more dents/ body damage from sitting in an apartment complex parking lot that it does from trail damage. (that will likely change in early march)- two years ago my jeep looked good- shiny paint, not a dent or scratch on the thing, and I liked it like that, but I like it just as much with only one taillight and a v-shaped rear bumper.

Okay, speaking from the Pretty Jeep camp: I try to avoid damaging my XJ on the trail for four main reasons:

1) I'm still paying it off. It's the bank's property, not mine.

2) It's a daily driver. No XJ, no work.

3) Money spent fixing it is money spent not going wheeling.

4) I live in an apartment building with a 'no working on cars in the parking lot' clause in my lease, and I hate paying mechanics' labour rates.

Now, I also have a car that I can use as backup if something breaks on the XJ - but that also has to be maintained, like repairing the clutch cable that ate the big green weenie last night. That's now money I don't have to enjoy either one with, and I'm out a backup vehicle until after the first of the year if something breaks on the XJ.

Yeah, I've taken some good-natured flak from people with rigs that are more built-up or that have seen more action, but so what? It's just screwing around. Nobody really cares, at least not that I've seen here.

One thing I will add: virtually all 'mall crawler' comments I've received have come from people with rigs (not just XJs; this is a cross-make thing) that scream "I went to 4 Wheel Parts and wrote a really big cheque". My usual reply to them: "look underneath". The dented exhaust, scraped skidplates, dings on the axles, and general covering of crap over every square inch of the underbody is completely belied by the fact that the body is in decent condition. A similar comparison on their vehicle usually results in no signs of active use being evident.

i would love to go wheeling in a more dry climate and not have to worry about dodging fallen trees.

Rockslides aren't any better. Trust me on this.

thank you. you read my mind only i do not live in an apartment yet, still at home while in college. geting an apartment in a year with my g/f. my girlfriend tj is the same way. ppl see a girl driving it and say it must be a mall crawler but its seen some hard core trails and lots of mud. she loves wheeling and so do i there just is not that much leagal wheeling in my area. and i would like to go on a jamboree or out to moab or anywhere out west.
