Wheeling/Exploring Centralia PA.

Just read this thread and had to chime in, I went through centralia one time with the wifey on our way back from the poconos. and quite honestly (offroading aside) it was neat to see, but it was almost, blink and you miss it if you stay on 61. Its pretty cool for the history and everything but its really not much to it, where u are SAFE to be at least. However once outside (and about 1/4 mile down from that sign posted above about not walking or driving in the area) there was a dirt road on the left side of 61, It was more south/east of the actual town part of centralia, I DEFINATELY thought that looked like a fun place to drive around (being that I saw someone pull off and head down that way). anyone know what I'm talking about?

I am planning on going out there sometime but I dont want to get into any trouble for offroading where I am not supposed to.

The spot i mentioned wasnt posted or anything. it looked more like a local garbage dump (go figure, what causes the fire and people just dont learn!) but it was more like it used to be a dirt access to houses as there were some building remains, we only went so far down, but the trail was plenty big for a jeep to go for quite a ways and looks to be traveled quite a bit.

Take a heavy vehicle and make it into an rc car. Then, drive it around from a safe spot to find sinkholes! I wonder if I could get a job at penndot doing that?

Joking aside, that place is awesome! I never heard of that place in my life. It would be cool to check out that little piece of pa history.

Thats the one.

It comes to many intersections. They lead in all differnt directions. I followed a few after camping on the way home.

1 leads to old 61.
1 leads you to new 61.
And the last trail we took leads directly to the edge of a strip mine. As in, if I wasn't looking 100 yards up the trail I would have been killed.

Once again, I didnt pass a single sign or warning marker.

Oh, and don't even bother going if you care about your paint job. Branches did a number on me even with limb risers.

well I don't think I will be driving too far back there limb damage aside!!! Looks like it would be an awesome place to go if you know what was safe and what wasn't. I didn't see any warning signs either and we only drove down to where your saying the trail forks into other trails. Mostly because if the mines didnt kill us, the locals in their beat up pick-up truck dumping trash looked like they might kill us haha
