(SORRY if this is a repeat thread but couldnt find my answer searching naxja or pirate 4X4, i could just be blind)

ok so on my deadline for sierra fest i am now looking at tires. i think i decided on the GT radial Adventuros M/T. ive heard alot of good things about them and ive experienced their grip on other rigs(if you have another suggestion im all ears). im going 31" on my 16" rims under a 3" lift kit.

my question is about my rims. i have what i think are called OEM "Icons", heres an old link i found to the similar or same ones:
http://www.naxja.net/forum/showthread.php?p=244841090

if i use these rims will i have enough spacing in front and rear to run a 11.5 width tire over a 10.5 width tire.

im trying not to run spacers as they're more $$$ and ive read bad things.

I would NOT go with GT Radials. Worst tire I have experienced and I worked at Les Schwab for years. obviously with anything, you get what you pay for... and GT radials are just about the cheapest of cheap. My gf had them on her YJ. They wore like crap, they rode like crap, they were loud as hell, but they did have some decent traction offroad. For the price, look into brands like Maxxis, hankook, cooper, federal, mastercraft.
As for the wheels. I would assume you would be ok but you might rub a little. you would want to get spacers, Just make sure you get the nice ones (again, you get what you pay for). or you can get 15x8 black steel wheels for like $50/wheels or 16x8 for like $60/wheel.

ok thanks for the heads up. i still like the radials cause there suer soft and grippy when aired down.

but since you mentioned it i looked into the other tires and im kinda falling for the maxxis bighorns. what can you tell me about dem wheels? havent seen a bad review then the obvious wear of MT's

The bighorns are good tires for the money. They are not high mileage but definitely better than the GT Radials. They are decently quiet and they have good traction. I would recommend them to someone looking for an entry level MT. Call your local les Schwab and ask them for a quote for some bighorns and their allied 51 daytonas.

most mt tires are not high mileage right? im looking for a good grippy tire but can be decent on the road as well. i want the offroad tire and my dad wants a street tire. the last tyep of "mud" tire we bought was crap offroad with no traction so im looking at the mt's

pro comp extremem mud terrains where quiet on road for me, goodyear MTRs seem legit.

for a/ts
bridgestone dueler revo 2s seem to be a decent cheap a/t for some wheeling here and there. we run 265/65/16 Yokohama geolanders on my pops 4runner and he likes them . he wheels only a handful of times a year.

how much are you going to wheel with 31 a/ts versus a DD? is it a DD and youll only wheel 10 times or less a year then do A/ts.

I dig the yokohama geolanders.

thanks for the suggestions. i PLAN to wheel alot since nevada has alot of good wheeling and its fun to me haha. my dad just wants me to have good traction and hes worried about gas mileage. i just want the all performance that mts have because now the only DD that ill be doing is going back and forth from Reno to SF.

well you didnt say you where in Reno . in that case get some 33s for those trails minimum really.

whats more of a constraint, budget, or good tire/vs bad tire?

if budget, get a set off of craigslist on rims used of whatever is cheap, if no budget, get something decent like the goodyear MTRs or I really liked my Pro comp extreme mud terrains for years and never ripped a side wall and always quiet compared to 36" bias ply iroks.

like Jon said, I would also recommend going 33"s. Get a little more of a lift, cut fenders and fit some 33"s if you can.
As for your question on high mileage. The more expensive MTs are going to be better all around, including mileage. I have seen some Toyo Open Country MTs get 70-80k miles on the street. A cheaper mud terrain is maybe around 30k miles. But it all depends on how well you take care of your tires and what you use them for. Rotations will save your life!!!! (tire life). I recommend every 3-5k.

Duratracs? They seem to be a good compromise... Also the Procomp MT2 comes with a 40k mile warranty, but I haven't seen many reviews and they are expensive. I have the same wheels as you and from the research I've done they more than likely wont work without spacers, with the size tire I want (265). I think it'd be a little too much backspace.

For a few bucks more I would get aluminum wheels, if you get aftermarket wheels. I have seen more destroyed steel wheels than I have seen destroyed aluminum wheels. Also, it never hurts to be pimpin'.

At one point I had a set of 32x11.5 street tires on OEM 15x7s, and did not have excessive rubbing when turning. I did have tubular control arms so there was nothing to catch if the tires did rub. I don't know why you would need aftermarket wheels at all.

good point phil. for 31s he should save his money for other projects and run stock rims...

I've heard a lot of great stuff about duratracs. Grab a set of 33x10.5s and keep your stock rims. Grab some spacers for the front if needed. Trim and bumpstop accordingly. The main thing thing that will rub is your lower control arms. Rustys makes some high clearance lowers to help with that and you can also swap in some WJ lowers which have a bend in them.

I have a set of the rustys arms for sale $40 with the clearance bend.

But I agree but I'd skip the duratracks the side walls are paper

I would think that the rear u-bolts would eat the sidewall of anything wider than 10.5 on stock wheels. I have MTR-k's in the 31x10.5 on ZJ canyons and the sidewall is CLOSE in the rear.
The General Grabber Red Letter's are meow available in the 33x10.5 flavor. Seem to be about 180-220$/tire depending on where.
If you do got the route of Goodyears.. they always have rebates, and additional rebates through treadlightly.org when you sign up. That is why I got my MTR-k's. In the end I paid for 3 tires.

I never wheeled my 32s but how would the sidewall ever get closer to the u-bolts than it is in a static position? The top of the tire getting pushed sideways?

How much thread is exposed on the top of your u-bolts?

My kids jeep has 32x11.50s on stock wheels and they have not rubbed other than the lower control arms. Did you think about keeping a set of 33s for wheeling and the stockers for when you make the run to the bay area? Just an idea.

thats a great idea terrance!
kid should keep the stockers and have 33s for wheeling...

alright im just gonna do a mass reply lol. :compwork:

  • So some updates..... i wont be able to wheel at sierra fest just because i dont want to rush certain things that need to be done to the jeep like tires etc. guess i got overzealous. but ill still be there!
  • as for the 33's idea. ya i know it might be the minimum for reno but i think it would be best to work my way up...wheeled stock..wheel 31's...then 33's then 35's...at least thats the plan and staying with the 3" lift. i feel its better to learn that way.
  • And i am going to stay with the MT's cause i definitely do stay on top of my tires.
  • no im not going to stay with stock rims cause after some extensive measuring i found i dont have enough room to run bigger tires than stock. but! i have already been contemplating keeping the stocks for the street and running mts for the trail. (got the idea from all the boys in Hawaii...thats what they do) and i think if i can find a place outside of my dorm room to keep my tires in reno or close bye then i can definitely do it! just need to do some more numbers crunching being on a college budget and all.
  • so to conclude i think im going to get the NEW MAXXIS BIGHORNS in 31's with some black stealies (used or new doesnt matter), and then hopefully keep the glam wheels for street use.

SO thank you guys for all your ideas and input, man i love naxja for this. but keep it coming!!! haha :yelclap:party1:
