What was done to YOUR rig(XJ/MJ) today MECHANICALY????

At least they let you know ...

worked on replacing the alternator yesterday. Heat + stupid placement = angry hot and tired me.

the amount of things needed to be removed to get the alternator out is maddening. its still not out. its all disconnected and the pulley removed and swapped to the new unit but the damn thing just wouldnt come out.

didnt help that it was 103 when i was working on it.

Only takes about 2 minutes to get it out, once the belt is off and the wires are disconnected, but there is an art to rotating and twisting in several stages to get out. It is a very tight process getting it out the bottom side.

I replaced the #1 spark plug on the 87 wagoneer, the prior one was oil fouled again in about 4-5,000 miles since i replaced the oil seals on the valves. Trying a wee bit hotter NGK spark plug. The MMO oil I added 2 weeks ago may have made it worse. Will add Lucus oil thickener once the oil level drops a quart again. Used about 3 quarts in 800 miles since the oil and filter change.

Fixed the AC!!!!! COOL BEANS!!!! It was an easy fix, the vacuum line at the firewall was broken again. I added an extra long line of rubber hose to replace the old aged plastic tubing.

89 jeep has a busted turn signal handle now :-(

Burped the cooling system some more, replaced the temperature sensor connector, and discovered one of my electric fans is dead. Now to find some stock cooling parts or replace the fan.

Pulled my #2 spark plug on the 87 and replaced it with an NGK for the first time. The plug was also oil soaked like the #1. I may be rapidly running out of time to pull and repair the head or swap the engine. She runs good and smooth with clean plugs. Plugs 3-6 look new even after 50,000 miles with platinum plugs. The valve guides are worn on #1 and # 2. Need to do a fresh compression test and see how she is doing now.

Did compression test on mine:

#1: 135
#2: 136
#3: 135
#4: 135
#5: 135
#6: 117

Not really sure that is grounds for a head gasket replacement.

Either way, the Jeep still over heats when sitting still. Hopefully picking up stock cooling parts (fan shroud, clutch fan, stock electric fan, and top radiator support) so I can ditch the electric fan kit I am using.

What oil are you using?

10w30 O'Reillys brand

Try walmart 20W50, with compression that low and retest using the wet test method, and make sure #6 is sealed tight on the tester threads. Vac or blow out the recessed area, clean it up.

Will not healp with the overheating, but will run better.

If #6 is that low, add some Restore in the silver can. That stuff is amazing!!!!

rotella 15w40 is my go too 4.0 oil

with that little of a drop in pressure i would double check that it is indeed a problem cylinder. i've always been told 20-30psi variance on higher mileage engines is normal. could been junk built up around valve seats, or worn rings, who knows.

Sadly, about 120/125 psi is the minimum OEM operating test pressure before the OEM spec says to rebuild or replace an engine, or fix a head gasket leak or bad valve....

IIRC the new engine spec is about 175 PSI. My sons had head fractures and warped heads from a massive coolant dump on the freeway, with one cylinder down to 111 psi causing miss fires. Got about 10,000 miles and a year out of it before we replaced the heads and gasket, using Bar Leaks dry pellets in the radiator to seal the head gasket mini leaks, and micro fractures in the heads, and Restore to get cylinder walls, pistons, moving parts repaired (Restore has mini metal particles, silver-lead-copper alloy that melt and weld to hot spots and fill in damaged spots on bearings, cylinder walls etc. That combo worked like a charm. Put about 70,000 miles and 8 years on the 1996 beast since.

Ls?

LS ... as in chevy V8

so, i started my wishlist for my one ton-ish axle swap. OME YJ leaves up front, trying to source OME rear XJ leaves for the rear, and sort steering. maybe a month or so away from starting this project.

Wet Compression Test on mine:

#1: 180
#2: 180
#3: 175
#4: 165
#5: 175
#6: 150

Excellent pressure!!!

Finally finished the alternator swap.

Threw on a new belt and air filter while I was at it and got the battery exchanged. It would charge up to 12v but after a day or two it was down to 1.5-2v.

Now to finally drive it and sort out other issues before it cools off and I take it for its first trip to rocks.

and of course i left the dome light on overnight haha.

it still started this morning but it was grumpy about it. when i get home from work i need to take some waste oil to the parts house so i will give it some drive cycles tonight.
