What was done to YOUR rig(XJ/MJ) today MECHANICALY????

Texas doesn't do sniffer anymore. They plug into the OBD2 port. If you are pre OBD2 then it's safety only now. Changed when they went to one sticker.

Emissions Testing Procedures
Is your vehicle required to be emissions tested?
All Texas registered vehicles are required to receive an annual inspection. All inspections include a comprehensive safety inspection; however, some vehicles are required to have an emissions test in addition to the safety inspection.

Which vehicles are required to have the emissions test?

Vehicles registered in designated counties. Designated counties include: Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Montgomery, Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, Williamson and El Paso counties.

Gasoline powered vehicles. Diesel powered vehicles and motorcycles are exempt from emissions testing, but are still required to have the annual safety inspection.

Vehicles 2 through 24 years old OR upon expiration of the two-year initial inspection sticker.

the 24 years part is where i thought i was going to have to get the sniffer. they still do the sniffer on pre ODB2 cars. ODB2 started in early 95 and ALL 96 so we still have a few years before they can retire the old sniffer machines.

it was nice paying 7 dollars for the inspection. my wife is taking the paperwork over to the tax office to try and get the registration sticker this week. be nice to actually drive it a bit this coming weekend since i havent really driven it a bunch since february when it was still stock :D

No, in Texas they no longer do the pre 96 sniffer test on any vehicles. They decided there were too few of them left to justify the expense of the Dyno machine sniffers any more in Texas. I think too many of the inspection stations were refusing to buy them and maintain them, and were just doing 96 and newer rigs and TxDOT decided to exempt them. Happened about 12 months ago I think.

the only thing i can find on that is an article from Dallas in March of 2014 (http://www.dallasnews.com/news/metr...a-might-end-tailpipe-tests-for-older-cars.ece) saying they were considering it. Every gov website says the sniffer is still in play. I texted a close friend of mine who owns/runs a shop and does inspections and he said sniffers required still. He doesnt have that equipment so he can only do pre 92 and post 96 inspections currently.

I know the gov moves slow, but if they instituted something over a year ago that effects knowledge the public needs to know they would have updated their websites by now.

its a moot point as i have my inspection done and its old enough for safety only now but im fairly certain this is still in play unless you can show me otherwise.

Mine are all pre 1990 and 96-2001, exempt. I thought he told me the new rule was already in place. I may have miss understood that. He did tell me the rule change was coming 1-1/2 years ago.

Here is a current news bit (But dated 2014 when the old article starts and 2016 way up top) on the plan by EPA to drop it. There or only 3-4 years of models left that would even be covered by the sniffer test, and most shops are no longer running and maintaining the sniffer test equipment from what I heard.

Yea im sure the shop owners will love getting that space back once they dont have to use them anymore.

i started working on putting my louvers on the hood, measured, made some tape lines, marked holes to drill for mounting hardware and drilled the drivers side before the wife called me inside for dinner. its been raining every night when i get home so i cant continue working on it. need to grab some etching primer to spray them with.

getting real close to having everything finished on it. need to order a tcase skidplate though, the 242 hangs down below my crossmember slightly.

87 Waggy now has confirmed high oil consumption with no leaks :(

Added some MMO and Restore and topped off the oil.

New AC problem this week, damper doors stuck in the defrost only mode ON ALL AC/HEAT SETTINGS. :-(

I hear a slight leak at the control box in all but one position. Had the lower dash off recently for head light switch work and something may have been knocked loose to come loose 2-3 weeks later. May ned to drop the dash from the top side to get the needed damper valves unless it is at the rear of the control box at the dash. Not looking forward to dorking with my only fully working DD. I have short trip vehicles for use in a pinch and my son, 25 miles away has the other DD.

OK, so I see those ads for the AC refill bottles with the gauges and such. I've taken the Jeep in numerous times... most everything has been replaced. I've noticed in this HOT weather it takes forever to cool off the jeep. Possibly low level? Would it be worth my while to buy one and check to see if low? It probably costs less than the service call at a shop? I don't drive the Jeep a lot but like it cool :)

Started tearing mine apart yesterday to swap in the new radiator.

do you have a black dash? chances are its not a low level but the hot dash heating your cold air. throw a sun shade on or a white towel on the dash and see if it makes a difference in how long before you get cold air.

also, brought these home. guess you could say things are getting serious

the cans are like 20 bux the last time i got one, so definitely cheaper than a shop visit.

For that price I would buy a real gauge n hose set on sale at Harbor freight for about $36 when on sale. See if it has 70-100 psi with the AC off, 100 on a 90 F day. If it is say 50 or lower, AC off it needs a boost charge, about $8/can at walmart last I looked.

We are talking R-134a right? Not R-12?

Make sure it is on Max AC and the outside air damper is closed.
