What was done to YOUR rig(XJ/MJ) today MECHANICALY????

OK, overheating issue??? Jeep has actually been sitting awhile. Drove 30 or so miles no issue. On return home... check gauges light and then 230-240 on temp limped home. I figured I'd start with thermostat. Bought one at OReillys.... the gasket had a sticky side? I peeled the backing and stuck on thermostat housing... replaced fitting after cleaning all surfaces. Leaks :( I'll be honest... never replaced a gasket without RTV sealant should I use it? Going to buy another today... hope I can install better :( Shout if I'm doing it wrong please.

If not the thermostat what should I check next?

Get the mopar t-stat. Also get a radiator cap. Make sure there isn't air in the system. Make sure the heater core isn't clogged/the water pump is pumping. Make sure it has fluid in it.

I wonder if you could use a 2WD 87 Red Cherokee with no body damage that has no engine or transmission?

not currently. my neighbor has a red 2dr 2wd thats been sitting since ive owned my house that i almost went and tried to buy the other day.

If I recall my daughter and I used crowbars and a sledge hammer and a few days of manual labor back in 2008 to fix that same area on her current 89 DD that she put 65,000 miles on since then. I thought you were talking unibody-frame damage.

there is. this is just the impact point i wanted pulled out. there is a wrinkle on that frame leg towards the firewall as well. overall im not worried about the damage. itll likely suffer more at my hands going over rocks.

OK bought the OEM Mopar thermostat and gasket. Installed and all is good with the fact it's not leaking. Let it run for about 45 minutes and stayed at 200 abd yesterday with less time overheated. Drove a bit and seems good. Will drive I35 to Waco tomorrow ... fingers crossed ;)

Give your mechanical fan a spin to check the clutch. It only takes a second and can make a huge cooling difference.

Oh ya. I totally forgot about that.

CEL came on tonight

Anyone in Houston have a code reader?

Just go to an advance auto. Their code readers that you borrow are actually pretty good.

I do, and I have the bluetooth version with Torque pro on my smart phone (runs about $25-$30 for the pair).

Ecomike I'm interested in that code reader for the phone... I have Android.

So how do I check the clutch? The fan is spinning and the elec does come on?

They still rent those here?

California outlawed them renting them out/reading codes for you because the shops all lobbied against it

I've done it at the one in Katy by the dominos

You can just go to autozone and they'll bring the code reader out and tell you the codes. Then they'll let you push the button to clear it.

Roger, did you replace the actual radiator cap yet?

I'll hit up autozone

Thanks

Will, the radiator cap was replaced awhile back. I can't remember if OEM or parts store :( I drove to Waco and back yesterday on I35 and no issues so I'm guessing it was the thermostat.
Maybe I'll pickup an OEM cap?

Ecomike, I'd still like the app and blue tooth connector setup. Be nice to have at park or off the grid. Easier than regular tester which I always seem to loan out and forget to get back for tripS ;}
