What was done to YOUR rig(XJ/MJ) today MECHANICALY????

Got the last couple items I needed for ROM

Just need to hook up the CB and re-wire my switch panel this weekend

back from my honeymoon and ready to start wrenching on the XJ again.

hoping i dont run into too many snags this weekend and can get the lift finished up.

Got my 85 XJ diesel registration renewed on line. The inspection was late, reg expired, but Was able to order the reg sticker online after the local inspection. NICE!!!

The 87 waggy finally de-cloaked the soft brake peddle source (I hope). Small leak on the front fitting of the combo valve. Brake light went off and the fitting was loose, but we could not get a perfect seal this time. Hope to find exact o'rings for it locally at the local o'ring place.

Ball joints ordered for the 89 2WD XJ. Picked up the rental ball joint tool already. Running out of DDs right now :(

Pics...or it didn't happen.

After:

Installed a new cap and rotor with brass contacts as well as new plugs and wires.

On the wife's Lexus I replaced pads, rotors, struts, and CV axles. Those cv axles are a bitch.

You don't have coil pack... what year is yours???

:( Never mind I see 99 ;)

Was asking because I just ordered plugs and boots to do mine before ROM :)

Hooked up the CB

Re-wired the switch panel. Off road lights work now, but still having an issue getting the switches to light up. Bad ground maybe? Good enough for now.

The goat roping contest is underway. Got the upper and lower ball joint off the driver's side today on the 2WD 89. Stalled at installing the top BJ. Already had to go rent a second and third ball joint press kit just to get parts we needed to remove the old ones out. Up to $330 in rentals already and looks like we need a 1.5" cheater pipe next for the upper install. What a pain for such a simple project.

Haven't worked on the jeep in a while, the gremlin has taken most of my time. Had a few small fixes for RoM. Rewelded my ghetto axle side track bar mount. And kinda fixed one of the ebake retainers in the drive shaft tunnel. Welded the hell out of it and it looks like poop. Thinking line loc or hydraulic ebraje. Rust here is killing me. Drivers floor is rusting out, i guess its really time for some major surgery.

i posted this in my build thread but figured id put it here as well

small victories i guess.

got the front end down and sitting on the tires. still have a few things to get done up front but i wanted to get the bulk of the work done and start working on the rear and figure out the details afterward.

so we started working on the rear. busted loose the shocks, the ubolts, supported the diff on jack stands and started in on the leaf spring bolts. i knew they would be a bear just from the videos i had seen on the youtubes but damn. we removed the passenger side front bolt with relative ease. moved to the back one on the passenger side. got about 1/8 of an inch out and a wonderful popping noise. sigh. ok well lets see how far we can get before we start the process of figuring out how to deal with that. moved to the drivers side rear. got about 2 turns on that one, and pop. sigh. ok, moving to the drivers side front bolt, 1/8 inch or so and pop again. at this point i was a giant rage monster. so took a break for a half hour or so, started googling to see what world of hell we might be in to deal with this since the nuts are captured.

started cutting into the box of the front one and couldnt get a wrench to bite onto the nut. after fighting with it for about 11 hours total saturday i finally called it a night around 10pm.

didnt get to touch it sunday since me and the wife had a bunch of errands to run that didnt get done while we were on vacation the week before. so the jeep is sitting like this until i can get those bolts undone.

Use a somewhat common nut splitter tool? Or replace the u-bolts (I assume it is the U-bolts on the leaf springs?) and just use a Harbour Freight sawzall (about $30 or less on sale) to cut the old bolts off in about 30 seconds each. Awesome tool the sawzall!!!!

HELP!!!!!!!

Calling all readers here. I need help!!!!

Got the old ball joints off the 89 2WD Cherokee. Don't ask how. Got the top ball joint installed. OK ask how, LOL.

I went to 5 local parts houses and rented 3 different brand ball joint press tool sets and accessories (cost $350 in deposits), made about 10 trips...and the closest thing they have to install the lower ball joint is too big by about 1/8" in diameter and so it turns itself side ways just enough to not work properly. Got the lower one installed about 70% but the ball joint edge is too buggered now to use the loose tube for the bottom to complete the install. Does anyone in the local Houston, South Houston, League city and surrounding areas have the right tool for pushing the bottom of the Jeep ball joints on for a 2WD, 1989 XJ rig? Not sure if they are the same as the 4WD, they may be. A case of beer is waiting :-) for the first to show up with something that works :-)

I was able to rent the correct tools from Oreillys, no problems. But I'm not sure if the 2wd is any different.

Tried to figure out the rattling noise coming the front end on my jeep again. Been around for a long while. Only rattles when driving it and goes away when putting any pressure on the brakes. Took the front passenger wheel off and after Some tapping around with a hammer, I noticed the caliper moves a bit. Looks like I need to replace the pin and boots or heli-coil the mounts. I'll figure it out tomorrow.

Did you rent just a standard kit or get the 4WD accessory kit too? I think the one I went to was out of the 4WD kit. Could not find anyone in S Houston/Pasadena with the 4WD accessory kit. Autozone has non anywhere and Napa has no rentals. The best kits I saw were at Advanced.

The POS (lately) Saturn threw the serp belt today and the lifetime warranty 70% off of Autozone durajunk priced auto belt tension crapped out. 3 from the zone and one from ebay all lifetime warranty, dead in 12 months. Time to pay the dealer $130 for a factory OEM BT I guess. And it is a biatch to install. No room....in the engine bay. Also found a brand new tie rod that with the nut loose. Seems my son forgot to tighten it :(

Coolant leak seems to have just been the coolant bottle when the water pump slipped from the dying belt.

Still hunting for the lower ball joint tool I need.

E-fan on my last working DD, 87 Waggy, today went bonkers making noise. Motor bearings going out. Borrowed the good one from the jeep getting ball joints and just ordered one delivered from Ebay for just $41!!!

Hell yes!!!!

I believe I did get the 4WD along with the standard kit.

I had taken the wj power steering pump and reservoir apart back 6 months or so ago to fix a slow leak and finally bolted it in yesterday and plumbed in a cooler as well. Well it leaked like a sieve as soon as I filled the reservoir. Finally got it swapped yesterday and autozone and a new pulley put on. It held a quart of fluid overnight with no issue so I went ahead and tried firing it up (more on that later).

Once it ran for about 10 seconds to smooth out, I killed it but not before it majorly cavited having try to cycle on that much fluid through the system. I guess I should done the ol' "jack up the front end and cycle the wheels a billiondy times" trick. I've been letting it sit for an hour to relax a bit. I noticed that there's a fresh pool under neath it now. I'm hoping that's from it just forcing its way out after being so foamy.

I've had the damn thing on a trickle charger this whole time and the charger has said it's in storage mode. When I tried to key on, I got nothing. I unplugged the charger and let it sit for a few minutes and then plugged it in with a different set of ends for the charger and it started right up....weird.

Lol....anyone got a spare hd trackbar mount? Long story......

Exxon Valdez has one for 20 bucks I was gonna buy but if you need one, snag it
