What was done to YOUR rig(XJ/MJ) today MECHANICALY????

fired it up and drove it around, hydraulic clutch feels so weird after driving my Subaru around with a cable type. in other news i havent heard from my buddy that was going to buy my 89 crapbox xj in about a month. he is probably in jail so i'm pulling my 23 spline 242 off that jeep for my MJ. now i just need to source someone to shorten my drive shaft.

Finally replaced my Driver door. Was able to find a 97 door white too :) So now I have my slightly damaged ;) old driver door and an entire passenger door. The electric components all seem to work fine. Shout if you need parts!

Upgraded the headlight harness today.

Ughhhh

So the rear axle is on jackstands right now. I was ill prepared for the disc swap. Anybody who's done this: did you go to longer studs for the backing plate? Also, my rear bearing noise is not the outer wheel bearings as I'd hoped. Looks like I'm in the middle of smoking another set of pinion bearings. WTF does this keep happening to me?

When I did a dana 44 to crown vic I got longer studs, but o forget what they were. Since then I had to replace wheel studs on the trail and I used front 2001 studs and they were even longer

So yeah, not wheel studs but the 4 studs that bolt the backing plate to the axle flange. The zj backing plate is a tad bit thicker than the chryco 8.25 backing plate.

I don't recall having to use longer bolts for the backing plate when I did my swap, but I've slept since then. Several times.

Ed,
I meant to pm you about it because I remember your 8.25 having discs. Honestly, I've read it in some write-ups and not others.....I think I'm good without having to replace them but not positive. It didn't matter this weekend as I did not have a die grinder handy to open them up with.

Have you ever figured out what the noise is in your axle? It looks like I smoked another pinion bearing. I think it has to do with my axle wrap and the degree that the rear pinion is pointing up. I've made sure to always park it on ramps (nose down) to refill the rear pumpkin so I'm getting as much oil in there as possible and avoiding any oil starvation at the nose cone. Any other ideas?

Actually, now that I think about it; I think I remember installing the backing plates. but noticing that the studs for the backing plate being a little shorter. I never swapped them, no issues so far and that was almost 5 years ago.

Nope, never figured out the noise. Haven't even had the diff cover off. I wouldn't be surprised if its the same issue with mine considering I'm using lift shackles, but I'm no expert. Seems very possible to me.

I'm supposed to be taking the Jeep up to Bridgeport on the 13th, but I'm still on the fence on actually taking it up there with the rear end sounding the way it is. I might just pull the axles soon to get ready for my axle swap and tear into the rear diff to see what is going on.

Adjusted my steering stops, no more rub

Lubed up my rear hatch lock actuator, it would unlock, but not lock from the keyfob.

Still have to figure out why the driver's door power lock will allow me to unlock the doors, but not lock them. Wiring looked ok

Thanks John for the idea to replace the mirror with the temp / compass mirror. I bought mine on ebay and finally installed it today and it actually works. It will be nice for the Big bend trip :)

Glad the install went well for you.

Been having a idle/surging problem. Reader showed O2's, so I replaced both of them. Didn't fix it so replaced the crank and TPS sensor. Took it out for test drive and so far it's running fine but the reader still says O2's are bad and the check engine light came back on. Just love electrical problems! But, it was nice driving her again.

whats the actual code number? just because you have an O2 sensor code does not mean your O2 sensor is bad. say for instance you have surging rough running issues high idle maybe and an o2 lean code. it could be a vacuum leak pretty easily

Replaced U joints in front drive shaft but have not put drive shaft back in. Going to replace pinion seal today :). I replaced both Tie Rod ends the drag link and tie rod on Pitman. I'll take it in tomorrow for an alignment. Getting ready for Big bend :)

Is that a hybrid cage? Internal bracing at the B-Pillar? It looks much better than a normal exo
