Overheated brake pads make a burning smell that might be considered to be a rubber burning smell. Last time I had that it was a tapered rotor and only one spot on the pad was touching the rotor and it was smoking-hot. But there was no smoke, just odor.

ok, I havent drove it since Jan. Not sure if these are related or separate issues. I knelt down by my front wheel and didn't really smell it there.

But who knows. Fun times a head lol

Could it be oil leaks on to the exhaust system you smell? They make smoke!!!!!

Went to a club meet last night...as I came to a stop I noticed smoke coming from the front driver side hood area.

Got to the meet, like a few minutes away, and I could smell something like rubber burning. Looked all around couldn't see anything. Turned the vehicle back on, could then smell something for a brief moment, then nothing.

Drove home and there was less smoke/smell, but when I got home and got out, I could smell the burnt rubber smell again...also noticed my front driverside brake not working...

Wondering if my brake is rubbing something and causing the burn, When I got home it was starting to rain and it was dark. Will have to check it out some other time.

my drivers side brake did that back in feb. when i was doing the lift i saw the caliper was packed with mud from my last outing in it. i cleaned most of it out and havent had an issue yet. If it does it again ill be swapping the caliper. i should probably do both front calipers and pads and rotors. they all look like oem stuff haha.

I checked all around the exhaust side thinking that a wire or wire loom or something may have come loose and is now touching it, but couldn't really see anything. I'm thinking more and more it could be the caliper that is causing this. Stupid rain... wait... Chocolate rain!

was it smoking and smelled like a rubbery burning smell?

oh yea it smelled awful and was billowing smoke. my wife was driving it at the time to the frame shop and they all ran up to her like it was on fire and she just gets out annoyed because they couldnt see it was just a smoking brake.

going to attempt to pull the frame ear out and get my bumper installed this weekend. will probably also do the trans cooler.

need to cut and fold my rear wheel opening as well and my new extended bumpstop should be here today. so i can get that installed. then i need to find somewhere to flex it out and see where its going to hit.

Only times I have ever had smoke of any kind in 45 years it was transmission fluid or engine oil leaking onto the exhaust manifold, Tranny fluid was the worst smoke volume. The other was a smoked fuse link wire near the battery when the O2 sensor wire shorted to the exhaust manifold and Renix had no fuse, just a massive fuse link near the battery that did not blow, it just smoked the O2 sensor power wire to the relay on the passenger side.

One other was the cherry red exhaust manifold on a 73 ford LTD that had a rusted seized vacuum advance on the Dizzy making it run lean as hell. Any oil from the valve cover getting near the manifold smoked fast. Smelled like burning rubber. Never had a brake part smoke even after a 30 mile drive with the parking brake on :twak:

Glass done, jeep moved to my temporary home, no more gf to ruin wheeling trips.

On another footnote, my Wagoneer brakes started making odd noises yesterday, scary as I parked and turned it off to go shop. Rest of the day no noise. Hoping it was flash rust on the rotors from setting up during rain etc..., but time will tell. About to give up on the Ford, front sub frame bushings I bought from RockAuto look like too much of pain to tackle for a vehicle that will be sold by August (son is moving to China for a year, to teach English and learn more Chinese) and wants to sell it to shore up his cash first, then shop for a newer car or jeep when he returns. The top side bolts look like you need to drop the entire mess, engine and all on the subframe to reach them. Four bolts and all the hoses and brake line etc....which is not happening on watch. Will try using RA camber bolts next on the camber problem on the Saturn, Please let them work!!!!!:banghead:
I need to get one these two back into DD service before I do the clutch plate etc on the diesel or before the Wagoneer breaks again (brake noise was no doubt an early warning of something)

put all this in my build thread but why not copy paste here.

Saturday was productive!

i got the rear fender flares off and tried to flex it out to see where it would contact. my jack ran out of reach before getting there.

So i decided to work on something else. Pulled the jeep in line with the tree in the front yard and with some finesse, a big hammer, a tow strap and a come-a-long i was able to get the frame end mostly straight, enough to get the bumper on.

Then i figured i might as well wire up the lightbar to the factory fog light harness. I had a weather pack pigtail i got off a junkyard XJ and spliced it into both sides. mounted it up and fired up the light bar.

was going to start on the transcooler after that but the rain moved in and shut me down. still got a bunch done which was awesome. feeling real good about it.

Nice work, looks like it almost ready for some serious Houston traffic LOL.

Yep a heep aint cheep! Mine got a new track bar what a difference it makes when you take out 3/4" of play. The weekend was dedicated to working on bows and setting a trot line with my stepdad. To do is a lift kit, tires, a radio/speakers, and interior oh crap when did they move payday to?

Well it is legal to drive on the road now. Got the inspection and registration taken care of this morning. Noticed a problem though if my defrost or ac is on it won't start worth a crap it starts and the idle drops below where it can stay running. Time to troubleshoot, any ideas?
