What was done to YOUR rig(XJ/MJ) today MECHANICALY????

OK just came from town. Last time I drove it It was overheating. Bad thermostat I think. Replaced with OEM. The temp gauge, if accurate, was reading lower than normal bit less than 190 all the way. No problem... got home and smelt antifreeze :( popped hood and it seems steam is escapeing at the radiator cap is that normal? Also felt top hose... was very hot but seemed like hard / full. Am I missing something or is this normal?

You should leave the cap off and run it till the T-Stat opens, then fill it to almost the top then after the foam stops from trapped air getting out fill it to the top and cap it off. I am assuming it is not a renix since you mentioned a radiator cap?

Replace the cap, but test it at the counter with a pressure tester (they rent them at the parts stores) before you buy it. Some are bad right out of the box.

If a new cap and proper fill/degassing does not solve the problem and there are no leaks you may have a bad radiator, water pump, belt, head gasket leak, bad fan clutch, is the E-Fan working????, engine running too lean, and lastly a possible exhaust leak blowing on the block.

Hmmm no telling there.

I replaced the combination flasher and still have no fear drivers side blinker. But the front one went back to regular speed. So weird.

When they start blinking fast, that is always a sign that the flasher-style relay is going bad, an early warning!!!

Hmmm left rear blinker doesn't work and the left front click double fast. But swapping the bulb out with a known good one doesn't help. It also doesn't click on with the hazards. Combination flasher or ground?

You tried a new bulb for the right rear blinker? Did you clean out the gunk in the socket first? Remove any corrosion?

Yup all that was done and I've now fixed it

Multifunction switch on the column...but it did need that plus the flasher relay

So, was it just the plastic piece in the column that was bad? Last time I was in the Jeep-GM columns on all mine to replace lock key mechanisms, it seems the turn signal switch part was cleanable except for the plastic part that can break. But when it breaks it is obvious trying to toggle the switch. What part did you replace or clean? Been a long while since I did one.

This is the turn stalk and hazard serifs unit. I'll bet to significantly different than yours since they stopped using gm columns about 3 decades ago.

I finally hooked up the stock xj cables to the parking brake hooks on the zj swap and I've gotten as tight as it'll go to no avail. Is there an adjustment on the brakes themselves? Can't pass inspection til then....

Ah yes, I see yours is a 99, mine is an 87.

Brake question, is the rear drums? If yes, then yes, there are adjusters at the bottom. Not sure about rear discs.

Is the cable too long for the custom stuff?

Should be able to adjust the parking brake. Have to take the rotor off to do so. Mine still doesn't work...

mine has the same issue. someone tried putting a new bulb socket in it (that was totally wrong for it. figured that was just done poorly and upon initial inspection a couple months ago. bought some stock bulb sockets from a junkyard. i switched that back to a stock one and verified it working on the bench but it still doesnt work on the vehicle.

saw your later post about the flasher and the multifunction stalk. i think that might be my culprit but it doesnt blink when the hazards are on either. ill replace the flasher first and then look into the stalk.

ive been so frustrated fighting with the lift that i wanted to fix a couple of the "easier" issues the jeep has and it wants to fight me on those as well haha.

Found my 3 new spare head light switches, good ones from rock auto close out about 5-6 years ago, 2 days after buying a Durajunk one from AZ :(

Finally found the $146 new GM dealer belt tensioner I bought 2 days ago from the dealer for the saturn that I promptly lost right under my nose LOL. Installed with a new belt and at 279,000 miles the 31 MPG Saturn rides again. I tried 4 after marker tensioners, life time warranty and got an average life of 3 months out them. Enough was enough. Finally went OEM.

New E-Fan came and got installed today on the 87 Wagoneer :-)
Still need to fix the turn signals on the Wagoneer and re-fix the head light switch. Don't ask. :(

Ordering one for the 89 2WD cherokee now. Motor bearings are going bad. Got 2 housing and blade spares now. About $36 each on line. A hell of a deal. I may order a spare. They may not be around much longer.

Still have one side of the 89 ball joints to replace. Then back to diagnostics on the 96 Ford transmission. One of these days I need to get the gas tank flange off the white 4wd 87 that has been parked for 3 years now.

Replaced a pretty new Radiator Cap with new OEM one. Jeep stays cool fine even in 4 Low on the trails. However when I stop and just the engine off it still leaks at the Radiator Cap and does not go to overflow. Think the new one is bad... anything else I can check?

Good thing you got it all the way back to surfside to do that....since that can't be done in HF

:)

You have to bring the parts to do it.

They make a pressure tester for the cap and for the radiator. You can rent them and I always check new caps at the counter with the rental rig before I buy them!!! They can be bad right out of the box.

Mounted on the radiator where the cap goes you pump up the pressure to 15 psi and watch for a pressure drop that would indicate a coolant leak some where.
