RPN = 288. And I'm sure you all realize that RPN rules. :)

I know someone on this board knows what RPN means.

How would you solve the following:

1/2x (The 'x' is a variable, not a multiplication sign).

bigalpha if you had an equation like 1/2x=2 i would see that as x=4 because you need to multiply by 2 to get x by itself however if you wrote it as 1 over 2x then multiplying by 2 to both sides would leave you with 1 over x still and you would have to flip both sides so they would be two different equations
I see 1/2 as .5 in this case but really its a subjective matter because not everyone will see that as me. I can imagine that even my math professors would see it differently sometimes.
But as for the subject before the answer in my opinion is 288 because of yeah PEMDAS I have always been taught to go left to right when solving basic algebraic equations. Of course when you get to calculus then it all goes to hell lol.

Chuck Norris counted to infinity ....... twice ....... and the answer is 288Hasta

and no more posts saying its 2 ....... Chris Berman is going to put the next "2" poster on c'mon man

The solution is determined by the manner in which the problem is submitted.

Working the problem, as submitted, the solution can only be 288.

That's really all there is to it.

absolutely right, well other then it possibly being 2.

but other than 2, or 288, there are no other possible solutions.

2 is not a solution when order of ops is properly followed.

Of course it is

PEMDAS

M comes before D, so yep 2 is the answer. Anyone that doesn't think so is generally a self-righteous a-hole when they answer.

It doesn't matter if you do M or D first, you'll get the same answer (if you do it right). Same with A and S.

You don't know how to PEMDAS

"Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, and Addition and Subtraction"

48/2(9+3)
Parentheses, you do what is inside the parentheses first : 48/2(12)=48/2*12
Multiplication and division(no, M does not come before D, its which ever you encounter first working from left to right): 48/2*12=24*12=288

No, its just simple high school algebra.

The AND portion of the rule has been posted like 10 times already.
