What not to do...

So the other day (3/14/10) I was at Hollister (while TDO was there) and got stuck in a mud hole. Nothin bad... just a little high centered on both axles.

I don't have a tow point in the front so we hooked up the strap to my hitch. We forgot the pin that holds the hitch in, so we hooked it onto the side... using the metal hook... bad idea.

He was trying to pull me back and up a ledge..... I moved maybe an inch or two before BAM, the hook ripped right through, and nailed the truck pulling me out. It ripped through the license plate, bounced off the spare tire, and dented the frame.

That could have easily shot off in a slightly different direction and injured/killed me, the guy towing me out, or the few bystanders.

Some guy came out of nowhere to "help" us get unstuck. He tried to convince us to try towing out in some very stupid ways. He said that a screwdriver would be able to withstand the pull from the tow-strap, tried to make me attach the hook to my tie rod, and said the only way to get pulled out was backwards up and over a ledge. When we finally got unstuck, he admitted that he was trying to make us do something stupid to cause more damage. :flamemad:

What I learned:
-Don't use metal tow hooks
-Secure the tow strap to a more solid tow point
-Place a sweater over the tow strap before it breaks off... not after
-Don't listen to peoples stupid ideas

On a brighter note, the trip was awesome. Made it up truck hill twice and on the way down I stopped and went up half way in reverse. Then, some guys in Blazers on tons had some trouble going up... Got a little tippy about half way up. Found some new trails. Watched the guys in blazers beat on their junk.... fun day.

at least no one is hurt, thats all that matters. trucks and parts can be replaced. I finally got legit front and rear tow points. I use them so much now, i don't know why I let myself go out for so long with out tow points. Oh and for the record a 1/4 inch drive extension will pull a full size truck out if you don't have a hitch pin. Probably highly stupid but it worked, didn't even bend much...sears can take that for a commercial and run with it!

ouch!!! very lucky!! i almost went, NorCalChris was there also i guess.

Great way to hurt someone, NEVER use the safty chan hooks for a tow point! Thanks for posting up, with this maybe more will learn what NOT TO DO! And what is it like $20 at OSH for front hooks? But you need to remember to bring the right gear!

I was there Saturday with URF and TDO:

I find I use a 6 foot and a 30 foot tow strap the most. Also GOOD front a rear tow points are a must. If your by your self and you don't have a winch or something of the sort I always carry a good shovel, a machete and usually my Hi-Lift. Atleast with a shovel and Hi-Lift you could always move rocks, shovel dry dirt or something to help free your rig. Might be a all day miserable project but if it works then it works. I say if you get stuck worse then that then you should A: invest in a winch or B: don't travel alone on hard trails. Or C: IT happens, I've been in a situation or two that I never thought would happen

People, please have proper recovery points on your rig. It gets said every year, and every year you see something like this. Its a good learning opportunity. Look at it like this - you spent a few grand getting it onto the trails, spend $100 to allow us to pull you out safely.

That is #1 on my to do list now. I don't plan on going out again without them. Is it a requirement to have front and rear tow points for organized naxja runs?I sure hope it is!

yes it is. even on unofficial events. ask anyone who has been snow wheeling with me about how usefull my front tow points are. Jeepfreak21, justjeep94, seansxj, blondjoncherokee, rocknxj, oldmanxj, any of them can chime in on how useful my front tow points are........:roflmao:

Yes front and rear tow points are a requirment.

This list is kind of the standard equipment that should be on/in your Jeep for a NAXJA run:
  1. Visibly charged fire extinguisher (BC or ABC)
  2. First aid kit
  3. Adequate spare tire, jack and lug wrench
  4. Safety belts for driver and any passengers
  5. Adequate attachment points in the front and rear of the vehicle:
    • Acceptable forms of attachment points: (All Items must be mounted in a manner to provide adequate strength and integrity)
    • Tow hooks of OEM or greater integrity
    • D-Rings
    • Shackle/Clevis
  6. 20ft 10,000lb snatch strap without any metal hooks
  7. Secured battery (no bungee cords)
But just ask yourself why would you wheel with out this stuff? Maybe save some money now, but how much will it cost if you need it?

yeah and a fire extinguisher as well as a strap with OUT hooks. I forgot to remind everyone of the basic NAXJA requirements on my SierraFest runs.

I will request a mod add it to the lists.

Josh

Can I ask why the hooks are a problem?
The hooks are bad because when they rip off the metal hook is a flying projectile that could kill someone.

Anyone have a link to that older video where the truck is pulling another in the snow and the hook rips off? The hook dents in the trucks tail hitch and then breaks out the back window. It was like a Bullet!

May have been kind of like what happend to the licence plate here.

Thank you for posting this. This list needs to be added to every trail event and verified by an appointed trail boss at the meet location prior to heading out on the trail. This equipment is checked at all sponsored Cal4WDC and associated club events, and should be for any NAXJA event (as per association bylaws).

Oh gotcha. So if they don't have a hook on the end, do they just end in loops?

yeah tow straps have loops on the end but people sometimes put a metal hook in the end so they can pull with it but what happens is the strap stretches under load and it stores a lot of potential energy and if the hook slips off of what its pulling the tow strap basically acts like a rubber band and launches the hook. do mass times acceleration equals broken body parts:skull1:

Yeah, the straps just end in loops. Using D-rings or shackles is much stronger and safer.

The tow strap is essentially a very stiff rubber band. If the strap breaks the metal hook is now going to be launched in the other direction really fast. Not good.

There's thousands of these videos out there. Stay safe.
