What I need to get done before Winterfest

Made some progress today

Thanks to Ron (WB9YZU) I got lots of trimming done today and mounted up the 33s. Found a few nice sized rust holes. Still need to do the rear cut and fold, which will be more like cut out the rust and patch in new steel, but the rest of the trimming went really well. Put one little slice in the washer fluid bottle but Ron was handy enough with a blow torch to weld the plastic back together and it doesn't leak!

Still need to clean up the front wheel wells and paint them black once the filler in the pinch seam dries but I'm happy with the progress. It can wheel as is so barring a work interruption I will be at Winterfest.

I wish I had the courage to get that done on my heep...

Lets see...

gotta replace a ball joint (easy and a lifetime part)

am out of alignment from axle swap (lifetime from firestone)

Get visibly charged fire extinguisher (should've done that a long time ago)

Get and install a CB with no cb radio knowledge (anyone bringing a swr meter and be willing to help tune it or whatever its called? )

Maybe get a new radiator (just used the 2 egg trick to stop end cap from leaking)

figure out what the heck the crazy noise i started getting from under the trans tunnel is that i finally figured out stops if i pull up on the e-brake a touch (wich hasnt worked for quite awhile before the noise started )

And hopefully take it on a light trail run to test 'er out and actually try my new lockers a bit. (all ive done is engage them and see how shitty it is to turn)

it'd be a shame to drive down there and have something fail that i couldve discovered by a little trail time.

CB should only take about 15 min. to install. I'd be willing to help at the campground if needed. SWR meters usually show up. I might even have mine tuned, it's only been 10 years since I installed it.

I ran eggs for about 8 months through the summer, if you don't get it changed, don't worry about it.

Check the E-brake cable adjuster, it's right above the drive shaft, it may be rubbing the DS a little.

I need to change the TRE at the drag link to get rid of a clunk & load on the trailer.

TRE didn't fix it. Need to do some work on the track-bar.

I wish I had the courage to get that done on my heep...

start with the front, if you F it up the fenders are easier to replace than the 1/4 panels

I'll bring the angle grinder and put it in Gene's hand. You won't be disappointed!

I'll be down for that as long as Gene wants to do it... Payment in Beer possibly?? After its done of course... :shiver:

Yeah he's a bit of a perfectionist, don't think you'll have a problem with them looking good!

Air nibiler (sp?) is the tool of choice for cutting fenders. If there's going to be decent air I'll bring my nibiler. It's a 17 minute job. hint: don't remove flares until you get ready to cut, the dirt line makes a great cut line.

What you should do is trim the fenders so you can reuse the flares...

It wasn't scary at all. I simply traced the top of the flare with a felt tip pen and carefully took a cutoff wheel to it. Just behind the tire I cut a little farther back so I could stuff the tire and not rub at full lock. The fronts are replaceable, I wouldn't worry about it. I would, however, be careful with you washer fluid bottle and pumps/lines. I rerouted the lines and horn in front of the triangle bracket. I accidentally cut the fluid bottle but it was easily patched. Shove something in there to space the fender out from the bottle. In the rear I cut just above the first lip then cut slices every 2-3 inches in the remaining metal and folded them underneath inside the fender "carefully" with a 3 pound sledge. I technically could fold the pieces back and bolt the flares back on but who wants to do that.

I wish I would have had a nibbler for the fronts but I managed to cut a pretty clean line with the cutoff wheel. Oh and since you live in the midwest don't be scared of what you might find(or not find) underneath that stock plastic...

The plastic caps and fenders have all been off since August when I ripped them off at apple valley farms in WI...

Thanks for the compliment, Flex.

Big 'don't judge my work on my own jeep' Hank

You made those fenders look good even though they're beat to crap!

Since my work screwed up and I'll be paying taxes instead of getting back the grand I had planned for... Some things just won't be done this year.

My 3 week crash course on the green trail bomber:

-Get my ugly MTR's mounted on my murdered out ZJ wheels. Then mount the wheels

-hopefully find a spindle so I can inherit Pat's old tire carrier, then weld it on.

-go to Pats shop and take on another full rocker replacement project.

-install heavier duty steering

-rear bumpstops

-relocate my cb antenna somewhere safer
-change oil

-change spark plugs

-Order JCR bolt strip things so I can maybe mount a tank skid at the badlands.
-finish my rear bumper tie-ins, should be easy.

-register for WF

-see if Pat still had the factory tcase skid I turned down months ago.

-pack spare random stuff that is scattered everywhere in my garage

Not that bad of list...

Big 'short on time and cash, but who isn't?' Hank

-register for WF

I vote that you knock that off the list first, it's easy and then you'll be committed to do the rest of the items. :D

I am slowly making progress, spent all last weekend putting wood flooring in half the house, and I'm changing O-rings and GPs in the diesel this week. Still waiting on diff covers, sliders, and a bumper, and the clock is ticking. Going to be a frantic wrenchfest over the next few weekends I think.
