What are you towing with?

He had no issues that I know of. He called me several times on the way home. It is a duce and an A2 iirc. He has used it as a camper before too, towing the MJ over to Morris Mountain and Uwharrie National Forrest. He went to a bigger tire and can do about 60 now. LOL! IIRC he told me he gets 10 - 12 mpg loaded or empty. LOL! But he is a mechanic so it is usually half diesel and half oil. That is the greatest part of those multifueled enjines IMHO.

Yep, I had it pinned as an A1/A2, an A3 would have super-single rear tires (and an A/T instead of M/T.) I get around 5mpg doing 53-54mph... mine's a 5 ton though, so that is to be expected, the spec is 5-6mpg.

Multifuel is indeed awesome - the plate on the side of my LDS465 reads "fuel spec - all petroleum distillates up to a maximum octane rating of 85m-95r". I used to joke that they ran on "assorted hydrocarbons", never realized how close to the truth it really was. The only thing to remember is that you need to throw some motor oil or other heavy oil into the tank if you are burning light stuff like gasoline - keeps the fuel injector pump oiled.

I sold the truck a few months ago. The pic of it on the trailer was when I was taking it to it's new owner.

I just got another one a couple days ago. I am not sure which way that build is going yet. It all depends on what donor I find first.

As a few of you know I was towing with a '03 Silverado 1500, 5.3L, 4x4, 3.73s, Class-V hitch, etc. I took very good care of that truck and only had 66k miles so it was performing as best it could. I trailered my XJ all over with it the past few months and my only complaints about that truck where the suspension, 4L60e trans hatings hills, and fuel mileage...
Until about 2 weeks ago.

I traded the truck in for a '06 Silverado 2500HD with the 6.6L Duramax Diesel and 6spd Allison trans. The difference is HUGE! Obviously the power is much better, but I didn't realize how bad highway control was with the 1500 and how nice it is to just set cruise and forget it. Fuel mileage picked up huge and it more than makes up for the difference in fuel costs. I went from ~9mpg with the 5.3L to ~14mpg with the stock 6.6L Duramax. Nothing behind the truck changed, same trailer, same brake controller, same XJ.

So, those of you that tow with Durangos, Explorers, XJs, and even 1500s defend them all you want. I was one of you until I stepped up to a bigger truck. Now I don't know what I was thinking trying to tow ~7500-8000lbs (my trailer isn't the lightest being a full framed 10K GVWR unit) with a 1500. Sure my old truck was rated to pull 9200lbs, but that doesn't mean I should have done it.

I won't be changing much with my new truck, but I will be adding towing mirrors.

You do realise the change in wheelbase alone makes for a major change in towing maners. My new f150 over the old one is a huge difference.

Sure the wheelbase does help but I think the fact that the suspension isn't near maxed out is the largest part of the increase in road manners.
I'm not knocking 1/2ton trucks. I loved mine, they just don't tow anywhere near as well.

I'm done towing with the lifted Cherokee. For me, it is XJ's parked neatly on the driveway, and my 2006 WK with 5.7L Hemi connected to my Fleetwood Bayside. Navigation system dialed in and movie in the DVD player for the kid.

sadly thats the biggest load it sees. although in its past life it was a BLM truck in Colorado, so it hasnt always been babied. it even goes where all the Jeeps go!

Also used the 88 MJ as a light duty tow rig. Last weekend getting ready to head up to shack for some duck/ruffed grouse hunting.
