What are you doing to your rig - the continuing saga

going to try and make it to penrose this weekend to get my motor swap done in the xj and finalize the deal on the motor home for my mobile tattoo shop!

Speaking of motor mounts. What ones do I want?

Mine are MORE mounts and are 12 years old. My problem wasn't with the MORE rubber mounts, but the part that screws directly to the side of the motor. On many vehicles, the cast and tapped hole is just a few thousandths shallower than the bolt that goes in. I recommend either pulling the bolts and adding a good grade 8 lock washer or grinding the end of the bolt off a little. Then reinstall with loctite to keep them nice and tight.

As for aftermarket mounts, MORE or Brown Dog come to mind. There is a company that makes a replacement for the factory piece that bolts to the side of the engine, but I don't remember who right now.

its MORE, Tom - they make a bracket for the engine side of the mount that picks up to more factory threaded mounting holes/bolts, for increased strength and less risk of what you just had to deal with. Brown Dog makes something similar, and my experiences with Ryan at Brown Dog have been DYNOMITE!, plus he's a NAXJA sponsoring vendor!

Brown Dog is donating some swag to our raffle this year as well.

I installed the Brown Dog Super Set after having the bolts break off on my stock block side mounts. They are a great company to deal with for sure.

Too bad I'm not going to cofest, will someone buy me a million tickets and bring me my prizes? but really, I call dibs if whoever wins them doesn't want them.

werd. I even used my Riddler D44 cover I won on the WJ! :gag:

Finally got my brakes figured out. Some new wheel cylinders in the rear did the trick now its holding great pressure.
Finished wiring up the new arb compressor. and its also working amazingly.
Heres where I put it: (and yes I know my engine bay is really dirty...)

Proably the sticker that fixed the brakes .

Since I just got some temp tags, I decided to look into why my steering was so loose. I took the Jeep to the shop and they told me my left ball joints were shot, the steering box was shot, and the control arm bushings were gone. The wanted around $1200 to fix it all. Since I only paid $900 for the whole rig, I told them to do nothing. I went and bought a Chilton's manual and have been reading up on how to do the job. In a day or so, I start buying what I need and get the courage to start the job.

Man you'd think if all that was wrong, that thing would have really bad death wobble. Ball joints suck to change out. Go rent a ball joint press from a parts store, get a big f'ing hammer and a breaker bar. If the control arm bushings really need to be replaced, hit the bolts with pb blaster for about a week.

BTW don't even bother buying the harbor freight ball joint press. It will most likely break.

I know y'all won't believe it....... but I actually worked on the BOR rig today. :gag:

Kiefer apparently got sick of it sitting around and volunteered to swap out the potentially malfunctioning coil. He removed it and went to install the used replacement I had and found.... once again..... that there's just some things they did differently in '97. Added to the list: Coil harness connector. Same as '96, different from '98..... which is the year the donor coil came from.

So I cut and spliced in a '98 connector.

Drove it for the first time in months........ not so much as a hicup. (knocking on everything wood right now..... )

Tires sure were flat-spotted though...... :looney:

Thanks for kicking me in the keester......... Kiefer......

nice. Way to go both of you! I want to wheel onemore time with you before the season is over. When is keifer coming over to finish the compensator?
