What are these??

Hi, Just having a look around my 97 xj and wanted to know what a couple of things are.
Its a right hand drive, and i hope the pictures come out ok!!
This is beneath the drivers side footwell, looks like a port for something that should be plugged in??

Now lets see if this come out!!

Oh well it appears that after spending an hour trying to get these pictures displayed it doesnt seem to be playing ball and ive only just noticed that it says at the bottom of the page that i MAY NOT post attachments, which is odd because ive posted pictures on here before?? Is there something wrong with the site at the moment, or is it a case of me having to stick my hand in my pocket and pay someone some money!!??

Again its a right hand drive and is within the passenger glove box.

Thats the servo for your hvac vents.

ok. Is this servo meant to move as you change the heat or positioning of the hvac system??

Yes, vacuum ported to the can should move the arm in and out. That vacuum comes from under the hood to the controls where it is applied to the servos relevant to heat or AC. Any leaks mean no control - this time of year, no heat.

Is there an underlying malfunction that prompts you to ask?

thanks and yes there is,
I have (now) decent heat from the drivers vent. and the blowers work fine on all the different settings.
However the passenger compartment is intermittently blowing half the amount of air or on other occasions half the amount of heat with the same amount of air.

And its very annoying!!! I never seem to have the same heat on the passenger side?
The vents for the feet arent great in terms of power. The recirculation seems good and demister works as it should as far as im aware and im trying to track this down.

I'm not really sure what you're trying to say here. You mean the temperature blend door makes it blow hot/cold intermittently?

This actually looks like the vacuum actuator for the recirculate door. The plastic tab going through the metal arm is broke on mine. Got a complete air box for it but to lazy to install it.

Yeah sorry its kinda confusing what i said and ill try and be a little clearer.
Im still trying to track down a problem.
The 2 face vents on the drivers side blow HOT, and they have decent power from the dial from 1 through to 4. everything there works as it should.

The passenger side 2 face vents have a mind of there own. They never get near the same heat as the drivers side. Kinda luke warm most of the time. On top of that i seem to only get half the amount of air coming out of the passenger vents often. Either way i never get the same heat. Usually 75 percent less heat than the drivers side.

This morning with snow on the ground, the feet vents were blowing luke warm at best on BOTH passenger and drivers side.

The demister clears the windscreen of ice, and clears mist in seconds.

The recirculate fan on the hottest setting gives me a slight increase in power (air coming through)and heat when its icy outside, which i understand is normal.
