Weekend is over...what did you get done?

I put a new gear box on my DD. I put in new fluid and jacked up the jeep and turned the wheel back and forth like I've been told to do. I kept adding fluid till it stayed filled.

Now the power steering is very jerky and comes and goes. Then it goes completely out till I turn it off and restart it.

The pump whined like hell for a few minutes while I was turning the wheel. Now it sounds normal.

Wtf!?

It also does this too... Strange. Power Steering with the lack of input. (This was with the front tires off the ground) As soon as I put it back on the ground all power steering goes away. AHHH! I need to drive this thing to work tonight.

Sorry the video is sideways.

I figure one of two things has happened.

#1 - I ***ed up the pump while it was whining like hell.

#2 - There's still a good bit of air in the system. How else can you prime the system?

Jack up like u did lock to lock 20x vehicle turnned off then crank do same 20x lock to lock lower vehicle lock to lock 5x if its still blowing alot of bubbles make sure you dont have but 1 O ring per port and everything is tight good luck

Ill give ya 100 bucks for it!

Nick, shoot me the drawing. Ill see what I can do. Converting drawings to a vectorizable image does tend to be a pita some time. I need better editing software.

I don't have a digital hi res yet but I'll send you a pic when I get home for some prelim opinion. I might still have Illustrator on my laptop where I can convert and send to you.

Something a bit like our sammi?

Some day i'll finally find an engine for this damn thing and get it back on the road...

No I mean stripes.

Crank the jeep open the PS reservoir and see if its frothy and low. If it is low add fluid and let it run. Continue to add fluid while it's running till it stops getting low. If it's frothy and not low then let it sit and dissipate. Once its not frothy add fluid. Then crank and see what it does and go from there. If it is not frothy and not low then its the pump most likely. PS systems can be a pain to bleed. You can also crack the return line on the box and let the pressure force air out there if the box is where the air is. Generally speaking though from my experience of bleeding my system on several occasions if it is hit of miss and the fluid is good and not frothy you have a pump problem.

For $100, you can have the old motor we pulled out of it. It's sitting in the back of my dads truck, waiting for a new home. Still runs too! Just needs a few seals, some oil, and a proper alternator bracket instead of the nylon rope the previous owner used.

Glenn, ill give that a shot in a few. It was frothy last night when I was trying. Haven't messed with it yet today.

100 bucks for the whole thing! I don't told ya I got a old 4.3 you can have if ya come get it. Its probably rusted solid by now thow.

Just checked it again. I started the jeep. The pump is silent. Sounds good. I checked the fluid. Not frothy, slightly low but not so low that it would cause a problem. Then I went to check and see if it worked and nothing. Zero steering at all. That was all with it sitting on the ground.

Oh yeah, the fluid in the resevoir was still as glass. No movement in the res while it should have been pumping.

This. Turbo.

This. Turbo.

Good luck convincing my old man. He's anti-turbo and anti-diesel....which killed damn near every one of my ideas for it lol. He's got his heart set on a 1.6 from a tracker/geo something else, but he's starting to notice they're impossible to find (which I told him from the start), so maybe he'll change his mind and go with one of my ideas.

Why would he want to do that? Marginal power increase with almost as much work involved. Plus, like you said, good luck finding one. I bet there's 30 4.3s in your local yard. Plus, parts are on the shelf at the parts store. Good luck finding a water pump for a 1.6 on short notice. Trust me, I've tried.

Unfortunately, my dad is the same way and still wants to run the little 0.2 liter engine that came in it.

come on up here to the rust belt, where everything except chassis and body parts are plentiful in the junkyards.

Trying to get the winch bumper back on alone and renewed for another 2 years!

I put a new power steering pump on just a few minutes ago. I figured it was alot easier to change than the box.

Bolted it up, bled the lines for about half an hour. Started the Jeep up with the tires off the ground. The pump sounded like it was supposed to. No whining. With the tires off the ground you could tell the power steering was working correctly...

I took the Jeep off the jacks. With all 4 wheels on the ground the steering seemed 'OK' but not as powerful as it should have been. I let it idle for about 10 minutes while turning the steering wheel all the way to one lock then to the other. It never improved. I revved it up a time or two while I was sitting there thinking. (mainly cause I like the way it sounds sucking air when there's not breather on the intake. lol) Then I tried to turn the wheel again and ALL the power steering was gone. Completely.

SO, with a NEW pump, a REMAN box, NEW high pressure line and NEW return hose it still isn't working.

I guess it's gotta be the box built incorrectly. Now, I'm waiting until Monday for a new box to arrive... The 3 hours of downtime that this should have taken has turned into 4 days of downtime all because some dumbass in a factory couldn't put his balls back where they go.

Btw, the steering wheel still steers itself when one wheel is off the ground... (see video above)

Pulled the tranny pan, drained the old nasty oil, cleaned up the pan, and cleaned the mating surfaces. Gotta pick up a filter and gasket kit this week and button it up.

The pan was held on by the orange colored RTV gasket in a tube. I was a little surprised by that. Shouldn't a transmission pan use a proper rubber gasket? Maybe not....

Timing belt on my buddy's 1.7L Civic. It really would be nice if they gave people with normal sized hands enough room to work in there....

Spent today looking for a new apartment. Not looking forward to moving again in a couple months.
