Weekend is over...what did you get done?

I would say the same, but my luck has been equally bad over the last few days.

Sunday night - brakes on the 96 blew out completely while I was towing a trailer in stop and go traffic. Thankfully I was in 1-2 so I managed to slow down barely enough to get engine braking and slammed it in park right before I ran into the person in front of me. Drove the MJ to the autozone down the street to buy a new brake line, and they were closed. Got back in the MJ and it wouldn't start, thought it was the battery so I walked home to get the one remaining running jeep (the 98) and drove it down, only to discover that the NSS had flaked out on the MJ and it started right up as soon as I got back. Drove the MJ across town, got the brake line, fixed everything... back to 3 running jeeps again.

Monday - ran out of gas in the 96, coasted into a 99 pub/restaurant parking lot, filled up with my backup jerry can. Got back in and the damn ignition switch broke the rest of the way and it wouldn't start! Had to crawl under the darn thing and jump the starter with the shifter in park. Drove to home, realized I didn't have a tamperproof torx in that size, jumped it again, drove to sears, replaced the ignition switch and cylinder in the parking lot while some dude stared at me thinking I was stealing the jeep...

holy carp, kastein. i'm starting to wonder if xj's and mj's are as dependable as i thought. i've had them with 350k on the odometer, and the motors never wear out. it's always the little crap you didn't think about that's keeping your jeep from moving.
oh well, xj's are cheap beaters- trail fodder, so i keep buying them.

Mine are 100% dependable... not one of those things kept me from being more than 20 minutes late to anything!

No vehicle is bulletproof, they all break down. A truly dependable vehicle is one that is so easy to work on that you can fix it on the side of the road with basic tools and materials and continue to your destination if properly equipped. That's why I carry more spare parts than most people and most of my tools at all times. My boss gives me crap all the time about that I need a dependable vehicle, but his less than 5 year old car has kept him out of the office more hours over the last two years than my 3 jeeps (91, 96, 98...) have, because I have the materials, tools, and knowledge to repair them nearly anytime and anywhere.

sent my front d44 to be regeared monday. should be getting it back tonight.
took the 9" apart. installed the lock right in the 9".
getting to the gears tomorrow. then breaks and seals.

mine were just allen heads, you sure they're torx? torx doesn't go by mm's or fractions of an inch. they are numbered like t55 and stuff like that. i would imagine you need a 50 or 55. i bought a whole set of the head bits that go on a 3/8 ratchet at O'reilly's for something like 15 bucks. it also came with the one that takes out the torx bolts on the doors.

Yeah. The head of the two bolts are definitely torx heads. Since I rounded off one already I figure I should get the right adapter for it.

I bought a 5 socket set from O'Reilly's for $13.00.

I got my external torx set at Sears, cost me like $45 but they're quite well made and I have like E5 through Ehuge.

ahhh.... i didn't realize yours were the external ones.... that's pretty gay. i wish torx was never invented- first time i pulled a transmission out of an xj torx bolts are what made it take 3 weeks instead of one day. i couldn't see the bolts, so i just assumed they were 11 or 12 mm, and couldn't get a good grip on them. i ended up welding a nut on the heads of the bolts, taking them out, and throwing them away.

I would imagine it's a 13mm 12 point bolt head like the ones holding the unit bearings on.

A standard 13mm box end wrench works just fine.

We have a winner. 13mm 12 point socket or box wrench.

Awesome! What'd I win?! :)

You get those ball joints out yet? If not you win the chance to come hang out with me one weekend soon and we will get them out. :rof: Then we go to Painted Paridise Farm jfor some wheeling!

Nope, Ball Joints are still hangin in there...

While I've been beating on them the axles been on jack stands. I think it's giving too much when I whack it. I thought about resting the edge of the C on an anvil and giving it a couple good whacks. That's my idea for the top one anyways. No idea how I'll get the bottom two out.

On the bright side, I did pick up new rotors, bearings, calipers, and pads for it today. 170 bucks later. ugh Forgot to get the wheel seals...

Oh yeah, I need the brackets that hold the sway bar to the frame. I still have one but I'm missing the other one...

Still need high steer arms
Modify my steering links
Studs cone washers and nuts for the highsteer arms
gotta fab a tracbar mount... It'll be a while before it get this thing in...

Waggy 44. The Ball joints are stuck in the taper. The ball joints press into the knuckles on this one for some reason. I just whacked the knuckle with a mallet till I got the knuckles off. Ball joints stayed put.
