Weekend is over...what did you get done?

Well the weekend has just started but I got the opportunity to get some shop time tonight, thanks to Dale.

So, I've finally installed chromoly shafts, new unit bearings and 2 solid diff covers.

And found out that my fuel capacity is diminshed due to the large dent in the center of my tank. As well as lower control arm mounts being trashed.

Guess I know what's next.

Finally got back on the gear changes after taking several weeks to build a hydraulic press. Got the ring gear installed on the 9 inch and working on the pinion. Having a hell of a time knocking out the axle tube races; got them started moving and just had to walk away from it for the night. Maybe will be easier in the morning.

Helped Joshooha and his girlfriend move into their new house yesterday. Having a couple of Jeeps, a station wagon, and two small pick up's came in handy for getting it done fairly efficiently. I managed to borrow a trailer from a buddy and another friend of ours had a trailer as well which definitely helped. Congrats again on the house Josh. Hopefully if all goes as planned i'll be going back to work at my old part time job and throwing money at Josh next weekend in exchange for temporary use of one of the bedrooms.

Spent today with my dad out watching a bunch of rednecks race their 4-wheelers and dirt bikes at a random dirt drag strip out in BFE north of Greensboro. As usual with redneck events out in the middle of no where, a small brawl formed towards the end, somehow in between the patrolling of the state troopers (who were driving back and forth only because they had nothing better to do and were LOOKING for a reason to break up this event). Took off shortly after the brawl stopped, and got hit at a "license check" around the corner by none other than the state troopers. Dad and I both knew what they were really looking for...DUI's...and i'm sure they got quite a few of them this evening.

make a thick washer that will fit behind the race snuggly. Drill and tap the center of it and thread a slide hammer into it...

thats what I did, except I was driving it out from the other side with a long piece of pipe and a big ass hammer. The problem was I didn't know the race was stepped and would not come out thru the backing plate. Once I tool the backing plates off they knocked out easy greasy! Feel like a dumb butt but my first experience with the 9inch Ford.

Cleaned out my garage...................geez did it need that!

I've been trying to get all that parts lined up to convert this waggy 44 over to 5 lug...

The only issue I seem to be having is that the guy I got the axle from didn't have the caliper brackets...

I got some waggy brackets from a friend of mine but they don't quite fit. The bolt pattern matches up but the actual brackets are hitting the high steer arms and it won't sit flat. How many different kinds of caliper brackets are there thru the years?

Ok, I'm a tard. I don't have the spindles yet and I was trying to get the caliper brackets to sit flush against the knuckle. I have to put the spindle on those studs before the caliper bracket and it will work... lol

Dee da deee..

I'd sure be up for some pics and a rundown of the parts you are using, like the coil mounts and control arm brackets, etc. I picked up a Waggy housing a few weeks ago to do a similar conversion sometime in the future.

This one was already in a TJ so all I plan to do with what I've got is cut the passenger side UCA mount off the axle for my 3-link, install a tracbar mount, go thru all the seals and bearings, truss it better and finish the 5 lug conversion...

The coil buckets aren't on there to my standards but they might have to do. They really aren't that bad...

All you need for the 5 lug conversion is Chevy small bearing spindles and Ford hubs, rotors and bearings.

Here's the link for the spindles:

and since the bolt pattern is different in the front you'll need new wheels and adapters for the back.

Ya wanna sell me the shafts out of it? lol I want some spares.

Here's what I'm working with:

not the weekend just yet, but thanks to watrousmark having some extra time on his hands, and some steel, got a good start on a nice sturdy bumper for my little beater. so far it's pretty simple, and all we've got left to do before we can bolt it on is bumper brackets. gonna make up a cardboard template tonight! some of you guys will give me hell about not running the brackets all the way to the rear bumper or some noise, but on another xj, i had a bigger bumper, complete with winch mounted into the 6 factory holes with grade 8 bolts, and never once had an issue, even with continued extreme abuse. i plan to do the same thing with this bumper, and i have no doubts that it will hold up. the entire purpose of this bumper is to look better than the stock bumper, and have tow points in case i get stuck. it'll handle both nicely. i'll post up some pics when it's all done.

Thanks again bud, it was quick and easy. Now we just gotta get settled...in like a month when racing is over hahaha.

First time out last night with the "new" HP D30 with and Ford 8.8 with the 4.10s.

Things I noticed:

1. Little shimmy between 25 and 35 MPH
2. Settles down when I hit 40 (backroads today...topped at 50 mph)
3. Felt some body roll, realized I didn't reattach my swaybar.
4. Steering feels really loose. Every bump fought me. Do know I need a new steering stabilizer. Have one on the workbench. Try to get it in soon. Also know I need one new TRE.
5. Smelled something funny. Looked under the front. I am losing gear oil out of the front passenger side axle tube. It is dripping off my axle and actually coating the inside of my tire.
6. Need to get the thing aligned and the steering wheel straight. It is about 75-80* off right now. Have no idea how fast I am going becuase the steering wheel "cross bar" with the cruise control on it is straight up and covering the speedo.
7. Wonder how much effect having the stock street tires on it instead of my 31" MTs (3.5" lift) is having.

Overall I think it will be a good mod. Look forward to getting some of the bugs out of it and getting it on the road and the trail. Still need spacers for the back wheels (less than 1/4" of clearance on the MTs against the leaf springs). I think the Fall Flog is out for me.

Another big thanks to PacificEd, High2By, and Wingnutooa for helping with the install a couple Saturdays ago.

Dirk, was that a disconnect hp 30 you put in with a solid shaft? there's a seal you have to get: part # CR11771 It presses into the left side of the tube inside the CAD housing part of the axle. super easy fix, and you won't have anymore issues. if you replace one TRE, i'd do all of them. i have them all under warranty at vatozone if you want to get them for free :D then do a tape measure alignment at least, and get that steering stabilizer on. i bet that'll solve most of your issues. call me if you wanna get TRE's for free from autozone....
EDIT: also, if you don't know how to do the tape measure alignment, i can come do it for you. i owe you a favor anyway.

Yes, it was a disconnect D30 and we did put in the seal. Not that one, but a homemade one that Mark had in the disconnect D30 that he used to run under his Jeep. I didn't get too deep into it last night, just came home and parked it! I'll probably tear into it tonight and see what is what.

Thanks Eric, and by the way, were you in Walmart in Cool Springs on Monday night looking at ladies clothes with your wife? I thought I spotted you, but by the time I got over there you had moved on.
