Weekend is over...what did you get done?

Cleaned and attempted to fix the vacuum issue that's stopping me from having a/c in something other than the defroster vents. SYE installed and d/s balanced, new u joints. prepped for the road trip to TN this week.
looking forward to swapping the 8.8 and HP30 in.

Ordered a SYE/ driveshaft kit, pulled the front bumper and steering box off to start cleaning frame for reinforcement and better bumper mounts. Like others; sweated and drank beer and mowed lots of grass. Hope to work on the frame some more tonight when it cools off a little in the shop

You should check out C-ROK if you don't have an inside frame plate yet.

Just got back from moving my buddy into his new place in Cullowhee NC, heading to Irmo SC to help my uncle do the headliner in his XJ tomorrow, stopping by Charlotte on my way home Tues night, then moving my sister to Boone NC later this week. Needless to say, I have some highway time logged/ahead of me.

no luck on the leak. I looked at all the connections I could see and traced the lines under the hood. I'm thinking it's a leak or a disconnect somewhere in the back of the dash....not sure if I want to fix it.

Started breaking down the lawnmower engine due to a broken connecting rod.

Now I gotta find new parts. I've thought about 'souping' it up some, but that's just extra work and extra $.
I want to see a stroked, blown 2 stroke lawn mower... get on it! :guitar:

just got done helping a friend move (fortunately only about 20 miles) - we did it in one trip, loaded up a uhaul, his lifted ZJ, and my M54A2.

Speaking of the M54A2... replaced the temp gauge, put the new top on, installed windshield wiper blades, replaced the hood latches, replaced the tach drive cable, got a new hand pump and dumped a total of nearly 10 gallons of lube into the diffs... just gotta solve the death wobble issue, redo the seat cushions, and replace the headlights now!

Friday night...prepped 4 wheelers for a day trip to Uwharrie on Saturday. Discovered one had a stripped out stud for the jug. Knew we were going to probably tear the cylinder gasket, couldn't find one locally, but decided to give it a shot and hope for the best. Tore the damn gasket. Spent yesterday dicking around with it instead of riding. Got it back together to find a massive oil leak from one of the other studs. Said screw it, and quit working on it for the day. Rode up to the store to grab some london broils and tasty beverages for dinner.

Today consisted of meeting my folks for lunch, more dicking around with the 4 wheeler, quick A/C recharge in my Jeep, and more london broil and tasty beverages for dinner.

I don't need to air in the Summer but having heat in the winter is nice while on the trail... I WANT to fix mine. I really haven't looked yet.

Gah, DW on that thing must suck. I still haven't seen a picture of it!

April pulled all the carpet out of the XJ yesterday and I just went out there and scraped 2 inches of crud out of the floor that had snuck in thru a rust hole that I could stick my head thru. I hoped up in the passenger side and my foot went thru the floor. SO, I'll be needing to replace all of that. What gauge sheet steel have you guys been using to replace the floor? Looks like the stock floor is about 18 gauge sheet. Idk if I have any sheet steel laying around in the 18 gauge variety. I'm going to have to replace pretty much the entire passenger floor... The driver side looks fine.

Now, the only thing I'm really concerned about is heat. I don't plan to put carpet back in it but I'm worried about the floor getting hot. Chrysler decided to put 2 layers of padding, one layer of carpet, and some other white insulator under all of that... Also, it seems all the heat causes the rust. I've seen the floor gone in SEVERAL XJs right above the exhaust all the way back. So, how do I guard from the heat? Wrap the exhaust?

It's, uh, violent. Like bruises on your hips from the seatbelt, everything flies off the seats, toolboxes on the passenger floorboards end up upside down type violent. The entire vehicle shakes a couple inches up and down on both sides, sometimes it pops itself out of gear, and the tires come a couple inches off the ground as it bounces back and forth. Sure wakes me up. It gets DW if I hit a bump with only one tire going anywhere from 20 to 30mph (bumps have to be really, really bad to get it going at 30, a decent pothole will set it off from 20 to 25 or so.) Once I get past about 30, it's utterly impossible to make it get DW, which is a good thing. I've taken it over diagonal expansion joints on the highway at 50 while they were paving, so the bumps were ~2-3" tall ramps, and all it did was catch air and ricochet me off the seatbelt back into the seat.

Huh, I've posted a couple pics... will find them again.

As for floors - I used 16ga, I like going better-than-stock and it's easier to weld without burning through IMO.

I've found that when you experience violent dw once you pucker up and grab the wheel white knuckled every decent bump you hit in that vehicle from that day on. I actually wrecked a huge F-150 because of DW once. Scary shiz.

I'll have to go pick up some steel some day soon. I'm going to cut all that old stuff out first.

The real saving grace for me is that it's active at real low speeds - like I said, 20-30. So it's pretty easy to handle. The only thing I'm worried about is it breaking something important loose. It's pretty controllable even while in full blown death wobble, I usually manage to let fly with a few curse words before I get my foot on the brake and I've never left my lane in the process. I think the worst part is that horrible moment of anticipation where you JUST hit the bump, and everything seems to get a little quieter and it rides real nice for a split second like the calm before the storm, but you know it's because it's about to throw you ass over teakettle.

I'm never buying a rusty rig again, nor fixing rust. Hate that crap and it's just not worth it. I think I blew like 3-400 dollars on materials (without even counting time spent) fixing my rear frame and floorboards and while it was a good learning experience, I can pick up a dead XJ with a blown trans / engine / bad axle with less rust or no rust on craigslist for the same or a little more and sell off the stuff I don't need.

Mine actually doesn't have that much rust on it. There's a small spot on the rockers (Which are about to be chopped off anyway) and the passenger side floor board. From my years of spraying mud and crud off the dash, seats, headliner and doors with the garden hose and crossing creeks and small rivers the carpet stayed soaked and I guess it held moisture. The moisture and the heat from the exhaust made it die. lol I've got pretty good resources for scrap steel so it shouldn't cost anything but time.

The truck looks pretty damn cool. Will the MJ fit in the back?

Not sure about the MJ, but I'm almost certain it will if I put the truck's tailgate down. The others should fit no problem.

It's all kinds of fun to drive, I drive it to work once or twice a week these days, would do it every day but 5mpg on diesel gets real painful.

I hope your workplace has a huge parking lot. lol They don't give you hell for driving a monster to work? lol I'd winch someones car up in the bed just to be funny...

Nope... we've got a couple lots worth of space that never gets used (in fact it's blocked off with sawhorses so they don't have to patrol it or keep it swept) so no one cares. Hell on fridays if I drive it I park it sideways across 3-4 spaces only two rows back from the door - that's the pic with the blue prius, in fact.

My boss's comment on hearing that I drove that to work the Monday after buying it - "OMG, that thing is in the parking lot?!" (he immediately went to look at it)
