Weekend is over...what did you get done?

I've never been to Rausch.

Windrock is huge. I think I heard that it's 76,000 acres. I was greatful that I had people to show me around or else I would have never been able to find my way back to my vehicle. lol

I snapped a rear driveshaft at the end of 16 last time I was out there. We couldn't figure out how to get back. So we ended up driving 16 backwards in front wheel drive. Which really was me being towed for about 25% of it. Haha

'scuse me, wut? 76,000? That is absurd. RC says they are 3,000 and that is a huge amount.

Is it lots of trail riding interspersed with obstacles, or do you have a lot of good/long rock gardens?

Good god, RC says 30+ miles of trail and Windrock says 300+ miles of trail.

That is ridiculous!!!

Largest Private owned park in the US I think. You can camp onsite too. They also have rough cabins as well.

You can ride dirt roads all day, ride medium trails all day or you can go straight to huge rock gardens. It's up to you.

This is what we did. Wake up, breakfast, wheel until dinner, cook then hang out by the fire or go night wheeling. Repeat.

incredibly expensive IMHO.

From what I'm used to, that's pretty cheap. At Rausch you have to buy a $15 membership, but that does not get you access to the park. Daily park fee was $35, but looks like it went up to $40 this year. Passengers were $7 so you save some money there, but for two days of wheeling for two people, not including the membership, you're looking at $94. At Windrock, two people for two days is $68 even though passengers pay full price.

Sounds like the Badlands. $20/driver, $10 per passenger. Additional days can be purchased for the driver for $15, but the passengers are still $10.

Windrock sounds awesome, but it's about the same drivetime as Harlan. I would have to choose one or the other, and I'm sticking with Harlan.

Or you could get a yearly pass to Turkey Bay for $75 and not pay another dime to ride until the following season.

Gulches is $25 per day. $5 per passenger. That's it.

I don't get the logic about the drive time. I keep hearing that. Why continuously go to the same place when there are other places to wheel? Harlan is great and all but just one place. lol

Where is Gulches?

Edit, NM, google....

a bit farther than the others but I could make it there sometime.

I'll definitely be checking out both as soon as I'm able. Harlan is a lot cheaper for sure.

Took Friday off and drove to Blowing Rock with Deanna for our 2 year anniversary. We stayed at Blowing Rock Ale House and Inn. http://www.blowingrockalehouseandinn.com/ Had an incredible Bison Burger and pimento cheese dip for diner. Had 2 flights of 10 different beers they had on tap. I think they brew 12 or 13 different beers right there in the 5 bbl brew system. Went and did some shopping and roaming around Blowing Rock before returning to the inn for more beer and to hang out. Saturday is was cold as hell. We did some more exploring. Went for a drive and ended up above the Appalachian Mountain Ski slops. Went to Bistro Roca for Lunch. http://www.bistroroca.com/ Afterwards we decided to brave the hick to view some waterfalls in the winter. Did I mention it was about 12 deg up there and cold as hell!!?? After the 1.5 mile hike to the bottom waterfall we then hiked back to the parking lot. We went back to the inn and proceeded to get cleaned up and go to dinner. We ended up not going to Appalachian Mountain Brewing's 3 year party and jsut hung out at the bar in the inn. Ended up meeting the lead brewer and at 10 at night he opened the brewery and gave us a personal tour. Was the most detailed tour and spill I'd ever had about brewing. Ended up he has a cj and is in the process of building it up. We talked about URE and NC4x4 and jeeps over a couple beers. Sunday we got up got packed and headed home. For lunch we stopped off in Charlotte at Midwood Smokehouse. http://midwoodsmokehouse.com/menus/menus.html Awesome food by the way. If you are in or around there you need to check them out. Here are a couple pictures I took:

I really need to throw them in an editor and burn in some of the hot spots. More here:

I guess i'm spoiled with Uwharrie. $5 a day, or $30 for a year pass. Granted, the size of Uwharrie is nothing compared to Harlan or Windrock...

It's also not privately owned and managed. Which makes an incredible difference. I'd have no issue with Uwharrie raising the price to $20 per day or $100 per year.

That'd certainly help with them always being in need of money and struggling to keep the place open.

We have to pay to play.

the issues is not them being short of money per say. The majority of the fees go to the feds not the trails. the raising of the trail fee would keep some of the rifraf out but not solve the shortage of money. You do know how the feds work right? They take from peter to pay paul and never give the money back to paul when he needs something..... :dunno:
