I am wanting to cage my XJ, and I have a bender, and a welder, I am just not comfortable building the cage myself. I have made tons of bumpers, and such, but for some reason I just can't bring myself to do it.

Well bring your stuff down this way and I will do it.... along with a few other things I... er... WE need to do.

LOL I just need to bite the bullet and go get the materials, and get after it.

Even better idea, find a job here, and pack up your family, and move here. Then you can use my shop to work on your stuff (or mine :eyes: ) anytime you want! :skull1:

I want an exo on mine, yah yah yah some like um some don't but I am one that likes them. In moderation though not like a jungle gym from a kids playground

OK i just called and I can get 100ft of 1.75 .120 wall for $145.00. I may just go pick it up tomorrow, and get started this weekend. I need to just bite the bullet, and do it. I am thinking of an exo cage somewhat similar to UniquXJBannon's rig, but with some front end protection as well.

You are welcome to make the trip here, and use my stuff anytime you would like as well.

Which would be better, an internal cage or a removable exoskeleton?

Well I am building a permanent Exo. I was going to do an internal cage, but I decided if I am going to spend the dough on a cage it might as well be protecting the unibody, as well as me.

Well I placed my order for tubing to pick it up tomorrow, and I went and bought a nice big welding blanket to protect my paint when I am welding it up. So hopefully tomorrow evening I can start toying with building the cage. I thought about getting a tubing notcher, but I don't know if I want to spend the extra coin. I just hope I can get all the bends to look good with my cheap a$$ bender.

I am also considering tieing the cage in with my Thor quarter guards when I get them.

x2) I'm not a very good welder, but I do have a steady hand and i'm very precise on cutting meta and tubing, and bending. But I couldn't weld to save my life. I know I could learn quickly though.

AFXJ) I'd go with a Hybrid that's structurally supported internally. That's what i'm doing when I get my 2001.

Yeah I'm still working on the front half...just gotta find the time to do it..
if u decide not to buy a notcher.. www.pipemastertools.com has a tool that I've used that works well with a torch! :flame:

im glad your jumping into the cage build. it will be a good learning experience. i think i will do an exo as well. i dont want my a/c vents to be covered up. :D that and if its done right they look sweet imo.

so which is better, internal or external?

hybrid!

ok which would take a smaller chunk out of your wallet?

Hard to say. To do an internal cage you have to remove, and reinstall the entire interior. If you are paying someone else to do this part, then you will be looking at a lot more labor.

I have seen some Exos with removable "doors" over the doors. I think thats pretty cool.

DG (and I) want to do an internal cage for her, and tie in sliders on top and bottom with tube fenders (aka a hybrid). Keep most of the stock looks while adding rigidity and protection.

For my XJ, I want an internal cage so that I can put a 6' long sunroof in the thing.
