"Upgrades" you most regret spending money on

spending a lot of money and time completely re-doing the body on my MJ. had i know what i would be doing with it, i would have just left the rust.

1. "Upgrading" my stock exhaust to a magnaflow high flow cat and flowmaster super 40. A year later the magnaflow cat had fallen apart, the flowmaster rattled inside, and the piping between the cat and muffler rusted out. The stock exhaust probably would have lasted longer.

2. 2" lift on a daily driver in a state that has no legal wheeling. It rides nice, but just shocks would've been cheaper.

3. Overhead console. It looks cool and is handy to have, but I get almost the same info from my scan gauge II. Cutting the headliner and splicing the wiring harness was a PITA.

4. Rough Country steering stabilizer. The bushings wore out in a month. The amount of time I spent putting poly bushings in it I could've just bought an OME stabilizer instead and did it once.

5. ZJ fan clutch. Masked my real overheating problem (clogged radiator), sounded like a jet plane taking off, saw a drop in mpg.

6. Precision Auto Injectors. 1st set leaked and resulted in a hard start. 2nd set leaked, resulting in hard start and worse mpg. Ended up just getting refund and putting stock ones back in. They do have good customer service though. :dunno:

She's still a seesy beesh! :D

33s and an improperly mounted stock swingout tire carrier.

hmmm...
OR-Fab front tube bumper on my XJ. Sure, it gave me front recovery points, and a spot to put a winch, for $100 used, but god damn that thing absolutely DEMOLISHED my approach angle. Serious case of Jay Leno Chin. Rather than repeat that mistake, I made a bumper for the MJ that may actually have better than stock approach angle and cost me something like $200 in materials, probably an overestimate. Ended up giving the ORF bumper away when my XJ blew up on the way to NACFest and I parted it out there.

OME leafs. They rode great and were nice until they went from 3.5" (2.5" advertised height) to basically stock height in under a year of wheeling and a year of DDing, which didn't really impress me much.

Agreed on the magnaflow cat, pretty sure that's what I put on in March (after my stock one fell off halfway home from WinterFest 12) and by sometime in September or so, it had vomited 2/3 of the core into my muffler, plugging it solid and making me worry that my engine was on the way out.

Also - what part of CT? There's a good amount of legal wheeling in Mass, a ton in NH, some in VT/NY, and some in CT. Most of it depends on being in a club with access to private land by landowner permission but it exists.

Rancho shocks, I got them buy 2 get 2 free and all 4 of my old shocks were blown and in need of changing desperately. They were fine at first I loved them, now it seems I can bottom them out just hitting minor bumps.

RC shackle relocation brackets....terrible ride...got rid of em

hmm im about to do the HD offroad ones because if all the positives i have heard about ride quality with a better shackle angle ..

Was there something about the RC ones that made it ride like crap ?

I have the ones you plan to use and I promise you the ride is great. Depending on what hole you put the upper shackle bolt, it's better than stock.

My first mistake was buying a stock 2000 sport off a car lot for $6000... After I did a carfax on it it was in a bad accident it was a fleet vehicle so the motor was replaced at 32k miles. It originally came from Michigan so every bolt was rusted solid, it basically had every symptom that people complained about...

My second jeep I have had only a few small complaints which have been my fault. Like dont buy a cheap oilpan, it was crap from the get go and I had to replace it. I put in a New oilpan and it still leaks, pretty sure it's my fault by using the rubber gasket and not enough RTV.

everything i built on my 89 cherokee was purposely built. sliders, bumpers, low profile hatch storage box and roof rack. Only thing I don't ever really use anymore is my roof rack. But only because with my storage box I can now put everything in the hatch and not smash anything. So i can now use it to haul wood to camp :)

I guess you could say my worst upgrade has been the weld on rock rings, I'm not knocking the product at all, I'm sure they will work fantastic but now it's made it to where I can not balance my wheels cuz they are off by so much weight. (10oz rock ring side 8oz inside lip) and I now have a shimmy at 45-50 mph... Once I get a trailer for my rig ill have no complaints but for a street vehicle I do not reccomend them at all!

Bushwhacker flares. Hands down the worst waste of money on my Cherokee.

You might not say that living here. They are pretty much a requirement.

Although I must say, after running the old pocket style and now running the new flat ones you can't even compare the two. The new flat ones are ten times nicer, more sturdy, easier to install and you don't have to drill into the back door.
