TV's making kids stupid these days

The problem isn't just the programming (but yeah, daytime programming is really dumbed down)- it's the people who park kids in front of a TV and leave them there. Instead of playing games, talking, interacting with people, they stare at a box whose sole purpose is to kill time and sell products. That can't be good for anyone.

Recently at a local prison they went from 10" b&w tv to 12" color tvs, then went w digital cable. It costs about 120 for the tv and a one time $35 cable fee for the life of that tv. The inmates pay for that with $ they have family friends and gf's put on their books. For those that can't afford that they have a 32" CRT tv in the day room free of charge. Know why? Same reason the government pushes tv legislation. Tv makes Sheeple. Since we initially installed the tv system till now, violent assults have gone down in our facility from two to three dozen daily to a dozen a week tops. We have a 1300 bed main facility and about another 500 annexed(work releases). They call us a correctional facility but were really a hotel with revolving door, preset reservations and no redeeming values whatsoever. Sorry about the rant. Tv, bad parenting and stupidly useless govt legislation suck!

I bought my 3 year old a dvd set of Tom and Jerry because he loves watching them. At the beginning of each disk there is a disclaimer about how racist the show is and then Whoopie Goldberg comes on and talks about how racist it was. A lot of dumb ass people are offended by all of the shows you mentioned and they have been labeled "politically incorrect"

Great Caesar's Ghost!! Just when you think, they do.

Sometimes, those who claim offense are some of the worst offenders.

Case in point - long ago, somebody decided "Amos and Andy" was racist and started a crusade. They got the show cancelled, and the cast ended up out of work and in the poor house. Nobody seemed to care about the "collateral damage" there. I seem to recall that in some post-cancellation interviews, those folks were rather bent outta shape about having their careers trashed, and rightly so.

I also remember the big stink back in the 80s about the WB cartoons (Bugs Bunny, Road Runner, et. al.) being too violent for kids. Hello? Anyone home? Bueller? Think, McFly - if you can't distinguish between a cartoon and reality, you've either got serious issues, a distinct lack of education, or both.

As if we needed further proof that Mankind could well be doomed...

I may have missed this growing up but, how the hell is Tom and Jerry racist?

I thought it was just a cat and mouse that are always trying to hurt each other until one was in serious danger and the other helped save him...

Is it racist against cats or mice?

There is a big stink on that is because any time Tom has an "owner" Its always some hefty "mamy" type, using what we now call "ebonics".

"PC" will be one of the major downfalls of the nation.

Your being offended, offends me.

Its the same with anything, violence in TV/games does not breed violence in people. The only time it possibly could is with complete lack of parenting. Saw too much of it when I worked at walmart and parents would come in on their phone and get annoyed that I would ask/explain "grand theft auto is mature, they have your permission to buy this?" when their 6 year old kid wants to get it... I think in my years there, I had ONE parent that I told about the game rating who actually looked at it, said "oh god, why would you think I would let you get this (to kid)" and put it back.

I have played violent games for years on end, guess what, I am safe and sane, just like 99.999% of the other gamers out there. Dont pin violence in schools or whatever else on games or TV (ex when they blamed school shootings on the fact that the kid played Counter Strike and said that it numbed him to violence or something). Parents need to enforce the age regulations (at least to a degree... can a 15 year old play a M game, sure if he isnt a complete lunatic to begin with). Parents need to, as previously mentioned, be interactive with their kids rather than sitting them down and not giving a #$%! what they do as long as they aren't bothered. Teach kids about violence, dont let the games teach them. :twak:

Plus as Rob said, if you cant tell the difference between cartoons and reality, theres an issue. If a cyotee trying to catch a bird (see discovery or the backyard for a demonstration) is "bad for our kids" why dont we just put them in a damn bubble and play elevator music all day. Then theres bugs bunny... last time I checked hunting isnt bad, rabbit pot pie is tastey.:spin1:

Wow I can't believe people look that deep into the hidden messages of cartoons(scratch that I can.)

When I was a kid I didn't think tom was a house slave because his name was Tom and the lady scolded him. I simply thought he was a mischevious cat that couldn't take care of ridding the house of a mouse. I sure am glad that todays cartoons for my kids are sensored so greatly for me.

Is Dora racist because they don't try teaching the kids french? or because she has a monkey(could be a racist thing) as her side kick?

you know on Diego the other day I saw him riding his motorcycle while talking to the camera, Do you think I can sue claiming that its negligence on their part allowing my 2 year old son to think its ok to ride a motorized vehicle while not paying attention?

Damnit! why'd you have to go and say that. Now someone is going to find that, and next thing we know Dora is going to be considered "edgy" and not PC. Thanks. Pretty soon (as in once I am employed again) I think I am going to buy all the old cartoons I had for my future kids, just put them in storage for that day... then my kids will be the ones who dont eat glue cause they werent brought up all "modern" and stuff. Once I have all of them on DVD I think I am going to start viewing this whole downhill turn of society not as "sad" but more as entertainment, to see just how bad/rediculous it can become
